Good video Mike 😊 I have driven an unknown 1600 so far about 50k miles that was given to me free. Tore it down = crank, rods, heads, and pistons good. Put in new bearings, cam and lifters, cast iron rings, cam and lifters, and a gasket kit. It cost about $200 plus some other used parts I already had. Wish I had a VW machine shop as nearby as you have 😊
Thanks for the info Mike! Do you think it would ever make sense to split a case to upgrade the camshaft if the engine is basically working well and does not need a rebuild? I have a stock 1600 dual port with a Holley Webber 2 barrel carb, 009 distributor with electronic ignition. It works well but could use a bit more power. Wondering if I should try to port the heads as a first step to maybe gain 5hp? (Exhaust is “Ernst (stock) style”, and I want to keep the stock style exhaust.). Thanks for all your content and shared information!
you can scale them and that is a cheap and easy way to have a better engine. The pistons and rods that are new come within 1 gram of each other. Original specs was like 4 grams. If you get them to scale out the same that would definately help. Having a shop do it cost $$$$$$....and for a street engine IMO not really worth the money. Scaling and blueprinting is cheap and easy. Check clearances and put the parts in the closest clearance. (blueprinting) The new china parts are actually pretty well balanced for street use.
Good video Mike 😊

some of those used parts rebuilds last a really long time. the only thing you cant check or do anything about is case wear.
Thanks interesting video.
Nice 😎😎😎👍👍👍
Looking good 🎉 how’s the okrasa coming along?
Working on it should be up in a few days max. depends on how some things go.

Yea it would really have a lot more power if you had a cam. it is the weakest link
what are ur thoughts on balancing the crank flywheel rods and pistons is it worth it
