  • The beautiful voice of Rudy Wissler was used in The Jolson Story as the voice of young Al Jolson. Scotty Beckett played the part of young Jolson and mimed to Rudy's recordings.

I didn't know that Rudy Wissler was the singer behind the young Jolson.
    Such beauty and warmth.
I loved his part in the Movie and saw it over and over on The Million Dollar Movie in New York.

One of the things I love about YT is finding I'm not alone. Years ago while viewing The Jolson Story for the first time I was floored by the scenes of the youth Jolson singing these simple, sweet songs. Now I find there a plenty of others who had the same reaction. Sometimes the Dream Machine did weave magic, didn't it?

So was one of my parents' favorite singers. I grew up listening to Al Jolson's music and even saw the Al Jolson Story as a teenager, here in my hometown of Ponce, Puerto Rico.

To FigAlert...hi...this is Kevin from the IAJS. Good to see you on here! (Paul, outstanding presentation!) For William Gagnon: Al Jolson lobbied for Rudy to play the part too, even though Scotty Beckett had already been signed. So, Rudy was put in a make-up chair at Columbia and their experts (among the best in the business) went to work on him. Afterwards, as Rudy told me, "With *my* Roman nose, it was decided I should stick to singing Asa's part. But Scotty was terrific, and to top it off, he looked like a young Larry Parks."

Yes, I miss the "Ave Maria" sequence too, though it's interesting to learn that it wasn't Rudy actually in the film...wonder why not? Or, if Scotty COULD sing, why overdub him at all, though Rudy's voice is, in many ways, as unforgettable as Jolson's in these sequences. When I first heard Jolson Story was coming out on VHS I was so thrilled. Now we have DVD and blu-ray and even better! My dreams have all come true!

More trivia facts for fans of The Jolson Story:
    1. Virginia Rees dubbed the singing voice of Evelyn Keyes, cantor Saul Silverman did the same for Ludwig Donath and Rudy Wissler dubbed Scotty Beckett.
    2. William Demarest, who plays a character named Steve Martin, plays a similar role, also named Steve Martin, with the real Al Jolson in Warner's The Jazz Singer nineteen years earlier. ua-cam.com/video/vVm9nsUb4sw/v-deo.htmlsi=LEj8JDC8Kgn0lEFG
    3. Lew Dockstader and Oscar Hammerstein did not discover Al Jolson. By the time Dockstader signed Jolson in 1908, Jolson had been performing in vaudeville with his brother Harry for several years.
    4. In addition to the fee he received for selling the rights to his life story, Al Jolson also was paid $25,000 for recording the songs for the film.
5.When shooting the musical numbers, Larry Parks didn't merely mouth the words to Al Jolson's pre-recorded vocals, as was customary. Instead, he sang along to Jolson's records in full voice so it would look like he was actually singing.
    6. In the movie, When Jolson attends the premiere of The Jazz Singer (1927) we hear the soundtrack, but Warner Bros., which owned the rights to The Jazz Singer (1927), would not permit a visual clip to be shown in this film, which was made by Columbia.
7.The film's accuracy was severely compromised by the fact that Al Jolson's third wife, Ruby Keeler, refused to allow her name to appear on screen.
    8. James Cagney turned down the lead role in The Jolson Story (1946), which went to Larry Parks.
    9. In the long shot of Jolson performing on the "runway", Al Jolson played himself, his only appearance in the film.
    10. Scotty Beckett was used instead of Rudy Wissler because of his strong resemblance to Larry Parks.

Yeah, I miss Ava Maria. But Scotty Becket could sing, too, there's video of him elsewhere on UA-cam. Apparently, something went wrong--maybe his voice was changing, and Rudy had to overdub. I'd like to hear Scotty's original voice recordings

BTW That's the real Al Jolson whistling at the end not Rudy. Rudy was an actor he appeared in Gas House Kids Go West (1947), The Gas House Kids in Hollywood (1947) and Good Luck, Mr. Yates. (1943). And although cute as a boy, he did not resemble Larry Parks which is why they used Scotty Beckett in the movie. Unfortunately Scotty died very young at 38.

Of course it's Al whistling. No one could whistle like Jolson. Let alone a 17/18 year old boy😂

For Michael B Wisper: Check my other comment, please. For EmpressDR: Scotty never made any vocal recordings for THE JOLSON STORY. The evidence, so to speak, is in the Library of Congress, from where these soundtrack recordings (without dialogue!) came from.
