Pretty common, I been checking around the area before digging to see if the signal continues in a straight line to or from something that would need a line

Got my first machine off Amazon 3 days ago. (JAN 2021) I couldn't afford an expensive detector but I wanted to get started. I got the DR Ötek MT-XR for just over £120. Never used e detector before but done what you said, and went into my back garden to have a bit of fun. Within 30 minutes I got a signal and dug up a Hammered 1200s Edward 1st Groat. I couldn't believe my luck. It really does go to show you don't need an expensive machine to find decent relics.
I tried metal detecting a couple of years ago but got very discouraged and gave it up. I am about to jump back in, Dan, and your tips have helped me see some mistakes I made. Thank you. You're making a difference. And your camera lady should get five stars for patience.

My first ever finds were a ton quarters my step father hide in the yard and didn't tell me lol I was 8 and thought it was the funnest thing ever and it got me hooked I'm 35 now and still at it
I done that for my son (7). I put $5.50 nzd in our backyard. I brought a cheap metal detector and we couldn’t find them. A couple of days later I got my money back and brought a decent one minelab vanquish 340. My son found most of the coins in 10mins. The look in his face was priceless 😃
I prefer to wear my headphones around my neck. That way I can hear my signals & be aware of my surroundings especially when I go out solo! Gotta keep an ear out for the bear, wild boar, snakes, etc. Safety first!!
I don't have any wild animals around my town, but I have a lot of wild people. People ask me why I carry a gun, well because i'm carrying an $1100 worth of stuff, alone in the woods.
One of my first ever finds was a ww2 helmet that I found in my backyard and my mom told me there use to be military training grounds around our area later on my nan gave it to the British museum cause my mum thought it was haunted
We've owned a metal dector for over a year but never took it out. We bought a house in June of this year (2022). Yesterday I promised my daughter we would play around in our yard with it today. Before I seen this video. It rained last night. Sounds like this will be even more fun then we thought. If we find anything good I'll come back n post about it.
You are exactly right! I’m a newbie here and I’ve already been feeling like everyone’s watching me! Also you’re right about the hard work! I didn’t realize how tiring it is, but worth it 😃
My first metal detecting find was a Victorian era Large Solid Sterling Silver Spoon. Later on the same day I found a Antique Gold & Emerald Ladies ring . Both found in my backyard. At the time I owned a Large Victorian era Home built in the 1860s . I finally sold it due to the expensive upkeep and maintenance costs. But I did find lots of older coins and a few other treasures in my yard while I had the place.
Hi, Dan and Mazzy great video brilliant tips I have had my Garrett Ace 250 detector for a couple of months. I detected in my garden first and the first thing I dug up was a half-crown. I only have a small garden but by the end of my first ever dig I had dug up 3 half crows one old 2 shilling piece a Corgi toy club badge and a lot of nails screws and little bits of metal I was over the moon. Keep the tips coming i can ues all the hellp. Thank you Pete
I really enjoyed this. Especially his tips on going slow, sweeping, and rechecking. I was in the USMC Reserves and even though I didnt have the good fortune for deploying I did go through the IED spotting detecting and marking course for pre-deployment. The biggest thing they hit on during the practical application course was going slow and 100% and then some. If you don't overlap wherr you just swept you or you team could be dead. If you don't go slow you or your team could be dead (or worse really). If you dont keep parallel and off the deck 2-3" (5-7cm) and parallel without touching you and your team could be dead. If you don't patiently sweep on the left side to find the left outter limit and mark a number of distance left of that, sweep to the right side of the hit/beep to find the right limit and mark right if that, then find the closest point and mark back behind that you or your team could be dead. Same with going back over the area immediately after EOD was done clearing that mark, there could be a secondary trigger and *BOOM*. Also you mentioned 150 Roman coins; if you don't recheck you'll miss 151, 152, 153, etc. I remember reading an article about 10 years ago of someone finding some Roman denaeris in an English farmers field that had been tilled and worked for almost 1500 years since they had been there, the rechecked the holes, found more, found more spots, eventually they found a treasure trove. If I remember correctly the popular theory was that there was a sizable long standing encampment there and a majority of the soldiers would keep their bag of coins buried shallowly beneath their sleeping bag or blankets, while the army general or quartermaster or whoever, kept the bulk of the units funds in a wooden lockbox under the Command tent. When the army got the orders to pack it up and move out it was a quick thing in which most soldiers were too busy to think of picking up their wages for the past how many months that were buried under their blankets and the leader even forgot the strongbox of the unitys funds. Having been in the military, I can totally understand.lol. Over time the leather or cloth purses and the wooden box rotted away leaving just the gold, which doesn't rust and doesn't tarnish or corrode easily. If I remember right it was something in excess of over 1,100 coins total and had a current value of like 12 MILLION dollars or some crazy number like that. But if the person who found them didnt keep rechecking the holes and didn't check the area around the holes they never would have found what is presumed to have been every coin out there. Also making it look like you were never there in the first place was something else hammered into us in the Corps. If you leave the hole or any obvious marker they whoever planted an explosive device there could just plant another one, then next formation if troops sweeping through would be like "oh that's where they found that one the other day", ignore it and *KABOOM*. But covering it up and making it look like you were never there you not only remove rthe marker foe the local bomb planter but also remove the cause for complacency for your allies, thus keeping them alert. Also, the thing about taking all the trash that was come across in the paths (which is a LOT. Apparently trash pickup and dumps isnt a big thing in the sand box, there's no fines for littering, people just throw trash everywhere) was also a big deal because any piece of trash could be a marker for an IED that was placed. By removing the trash by the roadside you remove the possible markers that could be used against you AND make any bits of new rubbish stand out as a possible marker. If you've had any formal training or ever spent time in the sand box in the military I can completely understand your peeves and would say the people you've fallen out with becausw of it can just Jog On or Sod off because they will never understand.
Hey Dan, here's a tip from a non metal detector that I saw on a TV show a long time ago. The show was about outlaws from past American history. This guy was metal detecting around a very old tree, one that was old at the time the loot was buried. The outlaws buried their robbery around the base of a big ole tree so they could come back later and fine the money from the robbery. If I remember correctly this guy found a five gallon can of Double Eagles or some other denomination of coin money. W0W, right? No not really, because this guy went back again and found like four or five more five gallon cans of the coin money. Of course, he had to give up the loot because it was illegal to keep it. That guy was a better man than myself because, finders keepers, loosers weepers! I'll be getting my metal detector after this Christmas. Sometimes you're better off being a kid so you can get your toys on Christmas morning. Thanks for the tips Dan and have a Merry Merry. Old Trees,👍🖖 Semper Fi America 🇺🇸
A good piece of advice I learned was to look for markings in a tree, such as an iron stake or nail which might be a marker for someone who buried something.
Well done Dan, I'm sure that more then a few will certainly appreciate the information!! Especially the tips about rechecking your hole, backfill your hole and take any trash you find!! Keep up the good work Dan and Mazzy!!!

No this lady also found a gold ring on my first ever detecting trip too! A trip out to Whitby... reported it to the police but no-one claimed it so I gave it to my hubby who sadly then lost it.. easy come easy go!
Deep Dan, I just started metal detecting and I love it even though I only found junk, but that's just around the house, now I know where all my husbands tools went to but I enjoyed everything that you said and all the TIPS you gave me. I love them so thank you so much for taking time to give us that are just starting out. Can't wait to watch the other videos you have out because they are a very good help for someone who is just starting to metal detector. THANK YOU AGAIN. BACK HERE IN DUNMORE, PENNSYLVANIA.
Excellent video! Several years ago, I went out into my Nevada desert here for some overnight camping and metal detecting (hoping to find some gold nuggets) and soon discovered that my arms got tired in a hurry! These days, as a decrepit old geezer of 64, I'd like to get another machine and give it another go except I fear that now that I'm even older that it'll be a disaster as I might not even be able to manage 20-minutes of straight detecting without having to have a rest. I wish someone would make a detector that's *super-light* but still does a great job of finding treasure.
I have been a detestorist for many years now, thought I knew it all but surprise surprise I used your very important tip the last two times in the field and found a gorgeous gold ring on the first day. Went out again a day or so after that and found another gorgeous ring. They are both 12 -14KT gold with beautiful stones, one blue the other red. My wife now has two more beautiful rings. The tip that you spoke of is quite simply SLOW DOWN. Absolutely fascinating results. Who knew. I cannot thank you enough. You have changed my game in the field. I have my excitement and confidence back thanks to you. You are an asset to our hobby. Also, the amount of hits that I get now puts many more coins and jewelry in my pouch.
your tip to recheck your hole was spot on. I was digging around Port Gibson MS. this is where the Civil War started. I was on an over look buff and at the end of the bluff I found a hole un covered. first that made me mad because someone dug a hole and didn't cover it. a large pile of dirt was to the side. I rechecked their hole and nothing in it. so I rechecked the dirt that came out of the hole. in that dirt was the nicest Union Officers Infantry Button with the shank still on the back. this just goes to show you need to check the hole and the dirt that comes out of it. thanks dan and your pretty camera lady. I hope you got her some new sunglasses,,,lol
Thanks for the outstanding video, DDD! I am brand-new to metal-detecting-don't even have a detector yet-but obviously your advice is truly helpful, applicable, and to-the-point. Your presentation and humor are great! You immediately became my #1 resource.
Thanks Dan for the great tips! I've been hunting for a long time and always cleans up during my hunt. I must say its nice to rehash old tricks to stay current. Us old folks do forget a thing or two! Thanks again!
Like everyone else I always wanted a metal detector so I finally got one to locate an underground power wire I put down about 50 million years ago. To date, making a total fool out of myself. My detector, set to aluminum only (It is an aluminum wire, btw) is finding wires all over the place. Naturally, when I dig there ain't one. Oh well. I'll find it one day. In the meantime Digger Dan, I know this vid is 3 or 4 years old by now but I'm gonna pay you the BEST compliment. I started grinning within the first 10 seconds. Not kidding. Ya done good! Your bestest fan in Alabam Norm
my first year of detecting was with a Garrett ads in the 1970's in a park that i was told was picked over every saturday by a detecting club. it had an old style coil. i managed to find 1 gold class ring and several coins there. the secret was go slow and overlap.i watch others swing the coil like they are going to a fire sale. i have used garrett, deus, minelab, white, and fisher. i now use a garrett 350 for the wife. its easy to use. and for me a minelab equinox 800. have sold all the others including fisher f-75.minelab explorer se ( a very good machine) an e track a deus ( suprise). at 78 years old the minelab equinox works. also no matter what the machine tells you dig it. whats under the big piece of iron ? you may be surprised. indian head pennies ! almost passed them up.
Good tips, though I would say it is possible to walk normally while keeping the coil flat/parallel against the ground, but it requires manipulation of wrist & arm (twisting wrists, adjusting height of arm) and can be quite taxing on the wrists. A bungee strap helps for heavier detectors.
Great educational video. Delivered with great gusto and knowledge. Your wife's voice however is most distracting, after I heard her speak I could not remember a thing you said, she has the most beautiful voice, the voice of an angel. 😁😁. Thank you. Cheers from Michael. Australia.
Have only started detecting a week ago have done me research on a place am detecting and have found a 1957 George 6th coin and army badge on my first try and there my top finds so far only been 3 times so far tho and a fill me holes and take the trash with me as it’s common sense really then ya won’t find that trash again aswell so it’s a win win for u and the farmer or wherever ya do
This cracked me up! Thanks for adding some humor to this video! I also never knew that about the rain. Very good advice! I have been metal detecting on and off for about 2 1/2 years. I have found rings, none of them gold or silver yet. I have found a cool braclet, a heart diary lock and a piece of its key. That's about it. The rest was just garbage. I will give it another three years and if I still haven't perfected my craft. Then I will only go out once in a full moon. It is very tiring and can get very hot out. But, I needed to hear I should perceiver. That, I will! Thank you! And, please go buy the camera lady new glasses lol!
Incredible Video Deep Digger Dan! I’ve known detecting just 3 years before you started UA-cam. Back in 2009 on my 11th birthday I had my first metal detector. I used it several times. Back then I thought detecting was quite boring. 8 years later in October now I’m back in the hobby. I still have my first detector and still use it today. U brought me back into the hobby. Luv you both and see you in the next video.

Hello from southern Florida! I just bought my sons their first metal detector. I never had one before, so I'm a bit clueless when it comes to this. Thanks for such great tips!
You are funny! I'm just getting started (Sep 2020) and one of your tips is about the trash. Never thought about that. I am going, right now, to grab a roll of "poo bags" (think dog) and put it in my detector bag so I have something to put found trash in. Thank you for this entertaining and informative video.
Excellent advice, Dan!! You are fun to watch AND very helpful !! I bet that's what you were heading for, yes? Well, I give you an A+ !! I found you looking for tips on my first purchase. Your tips on that were excellent as well. Keep up the great work. Repairs are done, and now it's time to get a metal detector and go out in the muck detecting! Any tips appreciated.
thanks from Canada! Didnt think of the after rain trick. Water activates more conductivity. Looking to do some prospecting for the 1st time with a detector.
Dan, Wow! These were Awesome suggestions! Just got a Gold Pro 2 for Christmas and planned on going out detecting today. After watching your great tips I've decided to explore my back yard for a day or two until I feel confident. Yep! Dan, so very true about what we should expect to find. On my first hunt with detector I found no gold ring, only a modern penny, a shotgun shell and a pull tab. : ) Thanks so much for this info. Thanx for the tips.i had a detector when i was 10.found full ww2 german bullets near the airfield in my village.now i am 41 and got a detector yesterday from my dad.tommorow we go digging.looking forth to it👍greetings from the Netherlands 🍻
Every one of these videos makes me want to take up metal detecting myself hahah. Thank you for investing in these, Dan.
#RMD 99% junk to 1% great finds great tips dan and great to see you back friend Gl&hh Thor 😊
No this lady also found a gold ring on my first ever detecting trip too! A trip out to Whitby... reported it to the police but no-one claimed it so I gave it to my hubby who sadly then lost it.. easy come easy go!
🤔I think you up to something..😂😂😂

Deep Dan, I just started metal detecting and I love it even though I only found junk, but that's just around the house, now I know where all my husbands tools went to but I enjoyed everything that you said and all the TIPS you gave me. I love them so thank you so much for taking time to give us that are just starting out. Can't wait to watch the other videos you have out because they are a very good help for someone who is just starting to metal detector. THANK YOU AGAIN. BACK HERE IN DUNMORE, PENNSYLVANIA.
Great tips, right on!!
Did you get an metal detector?
And did you find anything?:)
Love this guys videos...I've learned so much from him ...all things he says apply in the states also..
It be pretty amazing to find a roman coin in Seattle.
Challenge accepted
Thanks Dan for the great tips! I've been hunting for a long time and always cleans up during my hunt. I must say its nice to rehash old tricks to stay current. Us old folks do forget a thing or two! Thanks again!
I appreciate that these tips are short and sweet! To the point! 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Your bestest fan in Alabam
Norm
my first year of detecting was with a Garrett ads in the 1970's in a park that i was told was picked over every saturday by a detecting club. it
had an old style coil. i managed to find 1 gold class ring and several coins there. the secret was go slow and overlap.i watch others swing the coil like they are going to a fire sale. i have used garrett, deus, minelab, white, and fisher. i now use a garrett 350 for the wife. its easy to use. and for me a minelab equinox 800. have sold all the others including fisher f-75.minelab explorer se ( a very good machine) an e track a deus ( suprise). at 78 years old the minelab equinox works. also no matter what the machine tells you dig it. whats under the big piece of iron ? you may be surprised. indian head pennies ! almost passed them up.
Good tips, though I would say it is possible to walk normally while keeping the coil flat/parallel against the ground, but it requires manipulation of wrist & arm (twisting wrists, adjusting height of arm) and can be quite taxing on the wrists. A bungee strap helps for heavier detectors.
Great video Dan. Just learning and it's a lot of fun!
Hi there Banshee Moon, love your videos. I'm new to metal detecting myself, have fun and be safe. Best regards to you and your family....... Mikey
Thanks for the tips. Tomorros I will use for the first time the equinox800. Hi from NYC
Thanks for the tips. Just got my first metal Detector here in K.C Missouri
Just got my first detector today, had a pretty boring first day out. But thanks for the encouraging words :)
Great educational video. Delivered with great gusto and knowledge. Your wife's voice however is most distracting, after I heard her speak I could not remember a thing you said, she has the most beautiful voice, the voice of an angel. 😁😁. Thank you. Cheers from Michael. Australia.
I'm new too metal detecting and I found your video excellent with great advice and very funny as well.
Thanks for the tips, headed for the back yard now.
You are such a generous person I would be happier if you dig deeper and mentioned it a brave never hesitate to do so
Avery informative video. I purchased a metal detector and these tips will be of great help as I begin my journey. Thank you ever so much for doing this. 👍🏻👍🏻😃🍀
So glad to see you back as Deep Digger Dan.
I just love watching your videos, metal detecting has been life changing for me.
Excellent tips! # 8 got my attention. I have not thought about my swing so I will pay attention to that when I practice in my back yard. Rained last night and the sun is out now with the grass freshly mowed! I have to go... :) Thank you for posting!
Great tips! Need to mention the legal side of metal detecting, like permits and private property. Thank you
Loved the vid man, very helpful.
Thanks for watching.

You are a talented communicator. I'm in USA so your accent is extremely bizarre to me and yet I love your videos.
Really enjoying these little tips videos Dan, nice to see you back in the woods detecting, just like it used to be. 😊
Dan you've come a long way in the past few years especially with your viddo making skills your a positive influence on our hobbie at a time when we most need it! may your days be blessed with plentyful good signals.
thanx Dan, Love the video. Hope to see you again soon. Please keep the goodies coming.
Love your focused and easy going way to explain, great sense of humor!
Just got myself a noob-friendly Bounty Hunter Tracker IV and will check out some ground here. =)
just got me a Bounty Hunter Tracker IV too. Can't wait till the ground thaws!
That bloke really knows his stuff
Good tips !! I know exactly what you’re saying about the wild swing/the golf club swing. Drives me nuts Dan.
Thank you for this! I have my first ever metal detector coming Thursday and am going to record my unboxing in a video and then put my first ever hunt (in my back yard) on my new channel I just made. Not this one. Some of the stuff you said in this video, I had no clue about. I always pick up my trash and other people's as well.
So nice of you thanks for the teaching God bless you guys.
Excellent advice, Dan!! You are fun to watch AND very helpful !! I bet that's what you were heading for, yes? Well, I give you an A+ !! I found you looking for tips on my first purchase. Your tips on that were excellent as well. Keep up the great work.
I live on a lake which has been drawn down to allow lake front property owners (I'm one) to complete repairs to our bulkheads and boat docks. Repairs are done, and now it's time to get a metal detector and go out in the muck detecting! Any tips appreciated.
Like tip number 5. The ground in Australia can be Ike concrete where I am and very hot. Love going out a day or 2 after a good rain
Older video of yours that I happened to stumble across - good advice!!
thanks from Canada!
It never occurred to me that I wouldn't be finding gold treasures every time my detector beeped! Or that the loud beeping may annoy others nearby, or to re-check a score hole and the area around it. Thanks so much for sharing your wisdom with neophytes like me. I subscribed to your channel cuz I suspect you n your girlfriend are hilarious. I look forward to watching more of your videos. Thanks for giving back! Jennifer
Very new to metal detecting, this video helped me alot thankyou!
Awesome advice, love it, I am a new metal detecting student of you tube
Excellent advice! Im barely getting into this and I appreciate the advice
I love it!!!! Just got a new detector for Christmas, and I can't wait to get out. First video on detecting I clicked...👍👍👍
😂😂😂😂 Keep doing what you do!!!
I died laughing when you stepped on her sunglasses!
The rain tip is great. That’s where the beach is so profitable
Dan, I'm new to your channel. I'm just loving it ! You're informative, and funny as well. You're teaching me so much already. Thank you so much.
As an avid outdoorsman in the USA Tip 6 made me subscribe
I literally found a gold ring on my first hit the second time I ever used my simplex+. A 10 year anniversary ring with 10 small diamonds inset.
I’m flabbergasted. It was yesterday.
Good tips mate. I`m just starting my journey with metal detecting. All tips are well received/
i just found your channel and like it very much a lot of good tips as i am thing of doing this furder down the line so i will enjoy watching more of your vids thank you
Thanks mate for sharing. Have a good day be safe and stay healthy ever.
Great tips. The humour is great too
Hi, I enjoyed your video, light hearted and informative. Gave me some pointers. Nice job.
Yep! Dan, so very true about what we should expect to find. On my first hunt with detector I found no gold ring, only a modern penny, a shotgun shell and a pull tab. : ) Thanks so much for this info. I'm sure it will help a lot of people be prepared or at least know what to expect. I knew rain would make it a lot easier to dig, but what I didn't realize was the detector would detect much deeper. Love that! As expected, this was extremely Professional, Dan and Mazzy was a very adequate camera person, surely the prettiest and sweetest camera person you could ever ask for. I have always loved your dry humor, Dan. It suits you : D
Very helpful video, I’m expecting my 1st metal detector this upcoming week very excited! Thank you!
That intro was funny.
Back again just to show my gf and tell you that this video is great, and the points about people watching you and your backyard were spot on lol. I'm subbed, and off to your next videos.
I found a wheat penny as my first Target in under 1 minute with the detector in my hand. For the next few months I only found trash and modern coins
