      taxisteve929 I watched this again....just look at his hands resting on American Pharaoh's withers the entire stretch and most of the race...then look at the horses behind him, and the jocks pumping the horses with their hands up near their ears going for every last bit they have. This horse was all but eased the last quarter doing it on his own. What a horse!!!!!

      oo ee She lies again. Citation and Sec both, for example, were 2YO, 3YO champ and beat older horses on many occasions. Both were superhorses...AP is not. Try to do some research instead of lying. You look like a fool. Further, beating an older horse, in and of itself, means nothing. Level of competition, regardless of age is what's important.

    SECRETARIAT JUICED?! Yeah, by his own heart which was estimated to be nearly 3 times the size of a normal horse heart. I loved watching Big Red run, as I now love watching American Pharoah run. Horses are sooo majestic!

    • @jimellenw
      @jimellenw 9 років тому

      ALBERTKING901 Secretariat also had more lung than normal. About 8%. Put that with that huge heart and it enabled harder training and the results we all know about. I just hate it when folks say he was juiced.

  • @bbmtge

    In all his (Beyer's) years, there’s no doubt about the fastest horse he ever saw. Using his current methodology, Beyer looked at Secretariat’s legendary run at the 1973 Belmont Stakes to win the Triple Crown. He was astonished.
    “[I] came up with a figure of 139, which is by far the best of any horse I’ve seen,” he said, noting that Ghost Zapper’s 128 was the best rating of all horses in the last 10 years. “Secretariat was in a different dimension than any other horse we’ve seen in modern times.”

      Never run all out and today's was silly exhibition but best?
      I would not even try him against Seattle Slew yet alone Man of War or Secretariat.
      What are you using as your yardstick?
      He has won because his other 3 yr olds have little depth of class or stamina and
      his times are mediocre.

      @sbdgrwnmrw6085 9 років тому +2

      Alan S his Belmont time was not mediocre... he was hardly asked to run in the stretch and still managed a mid :26... these Haskell splits were better than decent and he had plenty left to go in the stretch if he needed to... lisa is definitely jumping the gun on the "greatest of all time" but you are taking too much away from his career thus far...

    • @TheMarshalOfLeague
      @TheMarshalOfLeague 9 років тому +2

      sbdgrwnmrw Agreed. He would be at a level with Secretariat if he takes the classic. AP is the best horse since Secretariat bar none. You say the horses this year are crap? Well you're right because if we had a decent horse for the belmont, as Gary Stevens said, he would of broken that 2:24 record. He has the second fastest Belmont run of any TC winner and his only BAD race other than his debut was the derby which he edged out and won anyhow.

    • @bbmtge
      @bbmtge 9 років тому

      Steve Prugar Utter foolishness. To make a statement that a horse can, arbitrarily, run 2 plus seconds faster in any race, especially a mile and half shows that you know absolutely nothing about horse racing. AP won't even rank in the top 10, if people like that system. Affirmed, Slew, Spec Bid, Citation, etc are all far better horses. I can't even respond to the comment that he will be on par with Sec. I knew before the Travers that Keen Ice was much more dangerous than his 16-1 odds would indicate……I couldn't believe Keen Ice was being dismissed like that. K.I. got a 105 Beyer for his run in the Haskell, and I figured with any improvement, racing second off the bench, he had to be put on this list of win contenders…..and seeing the replay of the Haskell….it comes into focus that much more. YEs, in the haskell, AP was "geared down" nearing the wire….but just look at how eagerly K. I. is eating up the ground……

      @TheMarshalOfLeague 9 років тому +4

      He finished last in the belmont so no sham wouldn't of won. As Gary stevens said. If AP had a sham to make him compete he would have broken secretariat's record in the belmont.

    • @johnc7149
      @johnc7149 9 років тому

      He would need an all time performance in the BCC to be in the sec and Man talks. If he wins both remaining races he is in the Affirmed and Slew class.

    • @johnc7149
      @johnc7149 9 років тому +2

      Actually he's probably in the Affirmed and Slew class already. Winning the BCC and next race will make him quite comparable with Bid. Hard to get in the Sec and Man talks unless a world record time that seems crazy happens.

    • @TheMarshalOfLeague
      @TheMarshalOfLeague 9 років тому +3

      John C He is already above Seattle Slew and Affirmed class. He beat both of their belmont times by 2 seconds, won in a downpour, has a near perfect record and unlike affirmed he's doing this without a horse pushing him. If AP had a competitive horse, he would have broken secretariat's belmont record and that is the words of Gary Stevens. If he wins the BCC he will have done something no other horse has. Won all 4 major US races. While I am not saying he is better than Secretariat, I really think if his career finishes well, he could be put in the same class like Zenyatta is for the phillies.

    I believe Keen Ice has APs number and if for a decent jockey rating him and the fraction will finish ahead of him.
    Espinoza was guilty of easing up too early. He sensed AP was tiring and timed his sprint to the near turn at the head of the stretch.
    Remember not many horses have more than one kick.
    The race previously aludd to as one of Secretariats "loses" actually had three separate bursts of speed only to be closed out by an apprentice incompetent jockey who insisted upon getting his magnificent maiden into trouble.
    The handles of LL and Penny Tweedy (Chenery) cared little about the colt and were money greedy back then.
    They ignored Eddie Sweats warning about a lip abscess and ran him in the Woodward anyway. You run with an abscess in your mouth!
    The DQ is more about the jockey and other horses so that was an easy win as well.
    Onion was a strong older horse who beat Sect when he ran a fever with a serious virus.
    As bbtmg said, Baffert would pull AP from a race if he farts sideways.
    Referencing Beyer speed numbers is not revisionist history.
    Study handicapping or don't, but pulling terms out of the air because they suit you is nonsense.
    AP greatness has yet to be written and yes he has an incredible stride but it is rare to see him in full Gallup.
    Watch Sectariat on turf. He bounces over a mile and 5/8 as if he were on a trampoline. The Canadian Invitational against an older horse of the year Kennedy Road is amazing. Watch him trample Riva Ridge the former KD and Belmont.
    Please let us watch American Pharoah run against 4-5 yr old horses. Then we can have a true measure of greatness

    I would rank American Pharoah as the 3rd best of the past 30 years, trailing Cigar and Skip Away. They each won ten G1 races against unrestricted fields (AP just won his first today). I think AP would pass Skip Away and maybe even Cigar, if he were to race until 6 like they did. But no way that would happen with a Triple Crown winner, he has nothing left to prove except as a sire. And let's not forget that both Cigar and Skip Away both ran 10 furlong races in 1:58 and change. Very few horses ever do that.

    Do I think he's better than the TC winners of the 70's? No... But no doubt this horse is great. We will see how he runs in the BCC. However I will always remember his stride, and how effortless he makes it look. Ears pricked the whole time, jockey just a statue. When he starts facing and beating older horses we will get an idea how GREAT he is. He already has a spot in history obviously, but how high remains to be seen. Hopefully owners and trainer make his last 2-3 starts memorable. Outside of Texas red no one is this class is worth racing, take on older horses now please.

    Oh poppycock! What the heck is Victor doing? We want to see how well this beast will do. At the very least he could have put his foot on the gas instead of just braking to finish line. What happens when you open up the blower and blow a little nitrous? I cannot wait for him to put this beast on the drag strip! He could have just give a little taste. That horse would easily do 1:31 for the mile with just a shrug on the rein. I hope they blow him out on the final race and set an unbeatable record for the near future, before going on to enjoy the rest his life! You ol' stud!

Now, finally....are you aware that Sec hit the 10 furlong mark in the Belmont at 1:59 flat...with a quarter mile to go...on cruise control? Are you aware that the 1973 KD track was rated, by Beyer, a full second slower than the 1964 track where ND set the record at 2:00 flat. Further, Sec was estimated to have lost 2 full seconds to track position. So...keep crying; it suits you.

    Before the Kentucky Derby, most horse racing experts claimed that this is one of the best and deepest 3yo class in a while. Well, now they are nobodies. American Pharoah makes them look ordinary. You can't blame AP for the competition he faces. They added $750K to the Haskell ($1.75 mil total purse), yet a lot of avoided the Haskell. He can only beat those who enter the races he is in. As for his "times", he is very dominant and final times right now are irrelevant.

      Texas Red and Calculator were not at the Kentucky Derby. That is not AP's fault. Texas Red could have opted for the Grade 1 Haskell, guess what? Texas Red passed. Again, should not be a knock on AP.

      jmeryllman That is nothing more than excuse. It has nothing to do with "blame." It has to do with analysis and judging a horse. It's the difference between running and racing. A great example is Sec in the KD. He had to run as fast as he did to beat Sham. Both horses ran the fastest KD ever. Sham was in perfect position the entire race. Sec broke slow and had to overtake the field. If you think that AP is capable of such, you are dead wrong. One analyst estimated, through actual trigonometry, that Sec lost 2 full seconds due to track position. So..learn something....if you are interested in factual analysis...level of competition is one category.

      Erik Pereira The derby he had a bad trip. He didn't do well and wouldn't run for crap and still won. The preakness was in a DOWNPOUR and he went a 22 4/5 opening 1/4 mile in the mud. His splits were fantastic but when he got 8 lengths victor said that was enough. He had the second fastest belmont of any TC winner mainly because of competition. The problem is john on Materiality knew his only chance was to hang back and that was the only speed horse. If john would have pushed AP to say a 23 and a 46 followed by a 110 he would have broken Secretariat's record as per Gary Stevens as he had the fastest final 3/4 in the belmont ever.

      Erik Pereira I do agree with the assessment that AmPh's competition is mediocre, the quality of the breed here in the US has been going downhill since the late 90s. However, AmPh is a rare exception to this general trend. Look at his stride. Do you see what everyone else is seeing? I was a skeptic too, after the Belmont - no more! This horse is phenomenal - wake up and smell the coffee.

      Billy Brownstar Um is yours about 50? Read the stats on the others and how many losses did Keen Ice have so far? let me see..that's right. It was Seven. And Upstart wasn't right during and since the Derby? oh, and Competitive Edge was dead last in the race Prior? And in Jerry Baily's own words the field wasn't tough. So yeah. 50.

    AP started to put the burners on at the quarter pole coming out of the turn. This horse is something special. Espinoza didn't even use the whip. AP is looking at the Travers and Breeders Cup then he will retire. NICE RUN by Keen Ice. The jockey was asking for him too late though. I won't be surprised if he runs in the Breeders Cup.
    Like a previous poster said, at the end of his career, I would put AP in top 20 but not top 10 all-time...IF he wins the Breeders Cup. Within the past 15 years however, I would say he has been the best despite Curlin, Zenyatta, Invasor, Smarty Jones, and Barbaro (who had a promising career lined up for him).

      drumma4lyfe06 I'm really hoping they don't retire him, like something magical will happen with the contract and will allow this horse to race as much as his heart truly desires. It's highly highly unlikely, but I can only hope. I know people are saying he's already proven himself, but there is so much more we could see from Pharoah. Imagine if he ran in the Dubai, JGC? That'd be fantastic.
      I do however treasure his well being over 'greed', so I can understand that decision to retire and not risk any injury.

      SkyPantherr I completely agree. I would at least say go for the Dubai. He already has big money coming in for breeding rights. I can understand the owner and Baffert's decision though. I personally care for his health and well-being and don't care about money.

    Before you all get your panties up in knots let's talk Beyer speed figures. They transcend years and various tracks. At best he was allocated between 105 and 108 for the Kentucky and Arkansas Derbies. . Only given 105 for Saturday which is average for a Grade 1 stakes horse.
    Secretariat had a high 120s when he set the record for the Kentucky Derby and a phenomenal 139 for the Belmont
    American Pharoah is just average.

    • @ooee7855
      @ooee7855 9 років тому

      This should be a 120 because it looked to easy. he would have beat The Record of Bet Twice
      But i guess that Record Is Weak since Pharoah only got a 105 when it obv looked he had ATon of Horses

    • @GermanOperaSinger
      @GermanOperaSinger 9 років тому +1

      Alan S Those low figures are a reflection of how terrible his competition has been. Sunday Silence and Easy Goer, and Skip Away, Formal Gold, Will's Way all ran 120+ figures because they competed against each other. If AmPh is ridden out I think he could run 120+ figures.

      Kevin Small Oh, look...another liar. Do a bit of research before you make an ass of yourself. Sec was run into the ground by LL and his 3 YO losses were all health related. Baffert would have scratched Sec from any race if he so much as sneezed. AT 2 YO he was mugged and off by 20 lengths in his maiden. Folks who actually know horse racing were mesmerized by the way he recovered and finished. Other loss was an absurd DQ. These are facts that actually lead to truths, moron. Sec was faster in his TC, where he still holds all records by some 70 plus lengths over AP. Read it.

      Erik Pereira It's not the competition, it's that he makes his competition look like garbage. Who runs a 109 3/4 mile then pull 8 lengths in less than a furlong? Put a speed horse against him in a 12 furlong race and see a sub 2:24 time as per Gary Stevens.

    • @sbdgrwnmrw6085

      Steve Prugar I agree with your logic the fast splits didn't even wind him... he had plenty left if he needed to go in the stretch for both Belmont and haskell ---- but sub 24? I want to see a fast bcc.. I hope all contenders show up for the bcc and he flys...
