Never had a Rottweiler, but when I was about 14, we had 2 Cane Corsos. They were both great dogs. Mamma picked up Panda from the shelter after she had been locked in a shed and starved by her previous owners. From the moment they locked eyes, they were practically attached at the hip. Then, one year, we were taking a vacation up in Tennessee, and my eldest sister stayed behind to dogsit. One day, a stray Corso wandered onto the porch and started eating Panda's food. My sister didn't know what to do, so she just got a second bowl, and before you knew it, we had twice the dogs. Her name became Big Ugly Dog (I didn't agree, but the name stuck), and she changed the way I see dogs to this day. She would wait for me every day at the bus stop. She could just look over at me with those big brown eyes and psychically transmit a tidal wave of unconditional love right into me. They were both good girls, and it killed me when I had to bury them. RIP Panda and Big Ugly. I'll never forget y'all.

I've always kept 2 Rottweilers in my home dating years back. This time I have a Cane Corso and a Rottweiler. Both boys are great. Cane Corso is most humble, has more patience with my kids, and extremely protective, territorial, and suspicious with others outside the home.

I have a question. I am looking into getting a bully breed. I couldn't get one the first time around was because I actually never had a dog before. I've had a female Golden now for 3 years and I feel ready for a second dog. I am thinking between a Rottweiler and a Cane Corso. I live in a condo by the beach and I feel lucky I've managed to make it work.
Personally, I think the Rottweiler will probably work best because this will be my first mastiff breed but I won't lie I haven't taken my eyes off the Corso either. I just need an opinion from someone who's owned these breeds of what will work best.

I grew up with a Rottweiler he was awesome !!! I love and miss him dearly. I definitely agree with them protecting you against anyone they think is suspicious. At home he was very chill and relaxed but when outside people are around he was very alert and ready. We also had a Cane Corso He was a bit more chill very sweet but we didn’t have long with him, he passed a little after a year from A disease that affected his immune system (I’m sorry I can remember the name) I would completely agree with this video. We have a Boxer now he is 15 ! and still hanging in there. We are thinking of getting a puppy soon. The Rottweiler is definitely on the stop of the list. This video was spot on.

I've had both breeds and they have distinctive personalities!
-The Rottweiler is almost like an infantery soldier: what you see is what you get!
Very simple (nothing to do with inteligence) and straight forward.
Will look up a lot to it's owner to make sure to have the right attitude. Owner leadership is key!
-The Cane Corso is more self aware, thinks by himself a lot more. (again, not an intelligence difference, just a different way of thinking)
Ownership becomes a bigger challenge. Being fair and stable is even more important as it could unbalance the Cane's reasoning.
The Cane Corso will not show you everything, will think about multiple things at the same time.
As a guard dog goes, it will have a more self-decision attitude. You must have an eye on that.
I found the Cane Corso better around small children. Both breeds like children, but the Cane is more chill and self aware of it's size.

    • @Wushu-viking
      @Wushu-viking 2 роки тому +7

@@descendancedenoefilsdadam1028 This is typical comment coming from someone with a lack of knowledge. The original German (European) Rottweiler is massive and powerful (not a dog you wanna mess with), with a big broad head and powerful jaws. Same can be said about a Cane Corso . Some Cane Corso's are stronger than Some Rottweilers, and vice verse. A Rottweiler is easier to train. A Cane Corso is more stubborn. 90% dog owners considering these two breeds, should choose a Rottweiler, because most people can't handle the strong personality of a Corso. Their character also reflects that. Cane Corso has a VERY STRONG character. And that is what makes it one of the best natural guard dogs. And it is fast, so good for hunting, if you get the old original (lean) type. It's prey drive is high, as Will explains here.
I love both breeds. (and has owned a Corso) But I would not choose any of them as my next dog. Too many health issues with these breeds. And they are Working breeds! For a job as just loyal family guardian companion, I personally would choose a Dogue de Bordeux or an English Mastiff. They are just more "lovable" and calm in general (not as effective as "working dogs")

@@Wushu-viking I'm based in France a country that have a well known knowledge about European breeds, I also had numerous including an European Corso long lean type that I rescued because his owners altough young were unable to manage his energy as a Martial artist competing in combat sports and fencing I have the opportunities to analyse many fights the Rottweiler is an impressiv dog but not a catch hunting dog like the Corso lean version or the dogo in 3 minutes these dogs will submit and be killed by both of these breed there are not catch dogs at all. They are butcher dogs like the Dogue de Bordeaux which I have a personnal preference against the Rottweiler. The Rottweiler is a vicious dog dominant breed but he will surely found his master with a Corso.
And the Corso bond very strong with an Alpha or Sigma owner this is just not the kind of dog that you unleash in the street to its prey drive. Mine is classified as Corso Pitmix by the American despite being a Corso, mine is high , superlong body and neck and lean muscle and still weight a lot with also a lon muzzle for a Corso.

Excellent. I totally agree! I've got 3 big dogs all my live here on the island....when a few years back my 60kg Cane Corso died (heart attack after tumour) with 6 1/2 it broke my heart. He was the biggest buddy ever.
I took on a Rottweiler puppy soon after that came with psychological and health issues (scared of men, possibly mistreated at the kennel).
Please always choose good breathers best family dog breeders where the puppies have access to loving humans from early on) Anyway we addressed his allergies and diarrhea with 2 months probiothics and he gad his eye operation.
From day one I was his protector and he became my perfect bodyguard. Luna my oldest 14 year old German Shepherd/Rotti mix became his Sub-mum raised him well and he played around her doing all the running for 2. My old dog ailed....
The greatest gift for Senshi was when I brought home a calm, brave, independent and intelligent Cane Corso puppy (complemented his character as he needs a lot of loving attention) He slipped into the perfect father figure and showed her how to behave at her best, even corrected his own little mishaps...
They are one heart and one soul now. As for their character (I confirm) the Rotti is more of a herder and the Cane Corso more a hunter.
A little anecdote. Senshi is feeding the chickens with me and one day one rooster got isolated from the rest. He chased after it and I screamed and feared for the worst. He brought the rooster back and dropped it absolutely unharmed. That confirmed my opinion of herder (surely the rooster preferred to be left alone 😅)
The Cane Corso is more stubborn of nature, but as she (they) are very intelligent they can learn fast.
I'm thinking when Nala gets her 3rd heat aged 2 years, I let them have litter. I think on the island the Rottweiler is overbreeded and the combined breed will come forward with a stronger breed as both are of gentle nature but still good watch dogs. It will make a perfect sub breed. Rotti-Corso (recognised breed). What is your opinion?

I am trying to decide between a rottie and a cane corso.
I've had experience training dogs and have done excellent with sit, stay, heel, down, and perimeter training my dog.
I also grew up around rotties, but haven't had to train a guarding breed myself. My parents got one when I was little and then we kept one of her puppies so there was always at least one rottie in my home til I was 16, and they were very well behaved.
My current dog is a mix, so I'd love your thoughts on what you'd lean to (or others in comments).
Other significant note (based on my study from your vids) is I can easily meet the exercise requirement and intend to take the dog with me everywhere basically, and I do have 2 kids around 10.

Sadly we're unable to give specific advice on which breed is best for individuals as there are so many personal factors. But we hope the content we've put up on each of the breeds you're looking into plus the videos we have on generally choosing the right breed for you helps with making an educated decision!

Actually Molossians are also a type of dog that's considered the "grand dad" of a lot of the bully or mastiff-type breeds.
Both Carne Corso and Rottweiler are part of the FCI group 2.1 of molossoids...like Boxer, Mastiff-like breeds like Mastino Napolitano, Dogo Canario... except bullterrier breeds, because of the terrier in them they belong to the terrier group 3 (i think 3.3?).
the part of the roman cattle/war dogs is a nice story (some also say it was Hannibal and his troops that brought them to Southern Germany when he went to besiege Rome ), However I am not sure if there is actual historical evidence for it. I would be careful to present it as facts instead of a possible origin story.
due to there being similar type broad-headed working dogs, maybe with different coat structure depending on the weather, in a lot of other regions in Europe. I think it's very likely that there wasn't a singular event that brought this type of dogs to different regions of the continents where it was useful for property and life stock guarding.
Since there had always been cultural exchange and trading even over big distances in Europe, North Africa and Asia Minor I think the chance is rather high that trading (for example at big regional cattle markets) played a role in spreading this type of dog over the continent where it was then bred to fit the different working and weather conditions.
A lot of the medium to big dogs in Europe faced near-extinction during the world wars not only due to being used in the war but also due to hunger.
Now of course some people ate the dogs, but also some of the people just weren't able to feed their families and repair their houses from bomb damage let alone feed such a massive dog even more so if you're short of men and boys, due to them being dead, POW and/or too mentally/physically traumatised to work. they probably ended up either being killed or just starving after no one was there to care for them anymore.
this was of course not great for the breeding base in those countries. Some breeds have been rebred after the war with only a handful of animals. that's of course not good for heritable diseases like some heart conditions, stuff like hip dysplasia or cancer.

I have bred and raised dobies in the 80 /90’s my first rott I gained free from another breeder as a friend as they were moving and couldn’t take her . She was 10 weeks old . I kept her till she was 9 yrs old breeding dobies. She last away then. Now it’s been 30 yrs since I had a dog! I have a German rott 4K dog from the #1 kennel in Germany. And I would not count out the breed! She’s loyal and loves my grandchildren but she shows her aggression when needed! If you want a rott you better prepare to be able to hold bk a 100 lbs dog cause with curso’s and rotts? They are strong ! When they want to go! Now my rott runs free and she has killed raccoons, possums, birds, squirrels. On her own ! They are very protective! And when they “go” you better be ready to hold them bk! Cause they will drag you! Btw the rott will kill a pit bull! 1500 psi on there jaw continuing biting you! Unlike pitts that bite and lock

    • @Wushu-viking
      @Wushu-viking 2 роки тому

Corso can be used as working dogs in Police and army. And can be awesome at it. But they mostly use Rottweilers, because there are more breeders/dogs around. Both very good working dogs. Rottweilers might be better in some tasks due to their herding instinct, and easily trainabilily. I guess that also might be why they use them (same reason many use German Shepherds. Even though these 2 breeds here, are stronger and more fearless, the Shepherds are more agile because of less mass/muscle.
Another problem with a Corso used to catch criminals... you want the dog to hold on to people, not to crush them. Another reason they use Sheperds mostly. Mastiff dogs could be too powerful for catch and hold tasks. They have high aggresion when it comes to being protective. If it sees the criminal as a threat to the pack.. well, sucks to that criminal.
But as protection dogs.. Pure excellence. If somebody were to attack my wife or daugther, fine by me if the dog kills that person (then I wont have to).

Native to Greece? Are you mad? It is now known that the Corso dog descends from the ancient Roman molosser "Canis Pugnax". And the presence of this noble breed in Italy has been confirmed since the Middle Ages.
In 1591 Erasmo Valsone in the poem “La Caccia” quotes: “the Corso great power, boldly attacks the beast and holds it back: since he has taken it, the tooth does not know how to loosen”. In 1881 Giovanni Verga, in his “Malavoglia” wrote: “He bites worse than a Corso dog”.
At the time he was being trained for combat in war, for which he had a great predisposition, but even then his most suitable job was the defense of the territory.
And this is precisely the main use that was made of it in the ancient farms of southern Italy: defense of farms and custody of livestock in the wild.
