I really loved both of the new endings that Bloober Team added. It takes a real love of the source material to put your own stamp on it while still capturing the spirit of what made it so special in the first place. So props to Bloober Team for that.
And the acting in Stillness legit had me sobbing.

My ranking of the endings from least favorite to favorite:
8: Dog (just goofy, someone found that in the unpatched version of the game it was different and had the dog swap James’s character models with Maria, pyramid head, etc. For some reason they changed it)
    7. Rebirth (Cool premise, and James is scary af, but I wish we saw what happens)
    6. UFO (just hilarious)
    5. Leave (feels like this one didn’t properly acknowledge what a terrible thing James did. Why is Laura cool with him now? Better in the og cuz there James sounded way more sorrowful)
4, Bliss (a bit out there but quite sad as James chooses a fake reality. “Ignorance is bliss” - The Matrix)
    3. Maria (definitely the “worst” ending but definitely is able to illicit strong emotions. Very harrowing, dreadful, and effective. I’ll never forget that final line)
    2. In Water (super depressing but that letter HITS with this ending. It fits with the dreadful tone of the game. They made it a lot more impactful in this version. My only little problem is that James went through way too much just to give up at the end)
    1. Stillness (perfect combo between leave and in water as it is somewhat hopeful and also properly addressed James’ guilt. Easily the most emotional scene and I wish it was available for a 1st playthrough)

The official japanese novel of the game chose 'In Water' as the true ending. I know it's sad and devastating, but it's also quite beautiful, poetic even 💔
Guy Cihi (James Sunderland's Original Voice Actor) is split between 'Leave' and 'In Water' endings.

"...they did understand the concept of having multiple endings was something they really believed in and in order to do that they all have to be valid, BUT for them (Team Silent) they put more love and effort into the In Water because it touches a really, really heavy place in the psyche and heart of japanese culture"

@hooray4paradiddles About Masahiro Ito, there is this post on twitter of him saying:
"One thing a man whose name was James saw in that town before he committed suicide" [Pyramid Head Image] and then replies to himself "We didn't officially say that 'In the Water' is canon ending..."
So he clearly likes to play with the audience because there is always an ambiguity in his posts to leave everything up to interpretation, but I just gave you the insight of the original James Sunderland's voice actor.

LOL. I am SO glad you did NOT get the Maria ending, as it's just the WORST! (and your EW! reaction doesn't disappoint! I love it!) In the original game the dialogue went like this... Maria: "You killed Mary again?" James: "That wasn't Mary. I want... you with me". Maria: "But what about Mary?" James: "Its ok, I have... YOU." EW indeed, lol!
I would hate for anyone to get that ending for their first play. It's rare to have happen, but I did see someone get it. I felt so bad for them!
Yes, you will understand the DOG Ending credits when you watch the OG version of the Dog Ending's credits. It's fun!

Agreed. Some of the choices Julia made during gameplay -- repeatedly visiting Maria when she was bedridden in Brookhaven Hospital, for example -- had me worried she was going to end up with the Maria ending, and I did not want that to be her first impression of the game. So glad she got Escape for her first ending.

Stillness ending definitely has a new noise added in at the end that is probably the door opening. It would make no sense if he died considering he asked Mary “Will you wait for me?”. Also I interpreted him glancing back at the letter in the seat that he would then grab it with him out of the car.

    • @govind.m86
      @govind.m86 25 днів тому +1

I disagree. It doesn't make thematic sense for him to jump out the seat and throw his car into the lake. He doesn't read the letter either. Nor does the word 'Stillness' convey any sort of positive feeling.
There's no door opening. It's the same sound in both endings.

I agree with you that it sounds like he gets out of the car, but one interesting thing I learned recently that I’ll add is that in the unpatched 1.00 version of the game, the letter read doesn’t happen in the In Water ending, but in the Stillness ending instead. Hard to say what that means, if anything, since it was changed after all, but it’s interesting.
There’s a number of differences between the 1.0 version and release patched game, a big example being the dog ending, it was actually pretty different originally, it’s pretty funny, definitely recommend looking it up

Some fun facts about the game. Beyond the fact that the police are erecting investigation tape around certain places and all the dead bodies found are Angela and James, with the note to run away and giving warnings in James' own handwriting..
Everything in terms of vehicles, weapons, radios, flashlights, props, in both the og and remake indicate that, as Ito once said, Sh2 takes place before sh1. (Sh4 also takes place before sh1.) James is wearing a vietnam veteran jacket, but it's bought from a thrift shop.
Leave is the ideal ending, and in a purgatory light, the ending that allows him to leave.
The letter, if you keep checking it throughout the game, fades and changes. By the end of the game, it's just a blank piece of paper.
If you're really into Maria, Mary's picture changes.
The Mary conversation actually changes based on the ending, at least in the og. In one case, Mary is actually the one trying to punish you for what you did.
Maria ending, vicious circle... he goes through another 3 years and does it all over again... it's all a recursion.
If you don't kill the monsters near the end, they all become weak, sick, sad, and leave you alone. If you linger a while, the monsters come to comfort you.

Stillness and Leave are my fav endings too, and you are right he drowns in both In Water and Stillness regardless of what ppl say. I played all of the SH franchise, but 2 is my fav.
    Here is the list:
Silent Hill 1 (1999) You play Harry Mason
Silent Hill 2 (2001) You play James Sunderland
Silent Hill 3 (2003) You play Heather Mason
Silent Hill 4: The Room (2004) You play Henry Townshend
Silent Hill: Origins (2007) You play Travis Grady. This one is exclusive on PS2 and PSP.
Silent Hill: Homecoming (2008) You play Alex Shepherd
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (2009) You play Harry Mason. This one is a reimagining from the first SH. Exclusive on Wii, PSP and PS2.
Silent Hill: Downpour (2012) You play Murphy Pendleton
    Silent Hill 2 (2024) Remake
Silent Hill ƒ (TBA) not out yet, takes place in Japan
The Mason story is connected in SH1, SH3, Origins and Shattered Memories which is also in the SH movies. The cult part of the franchise. Heather Mason is "one of a kind" , you'll see why ^_^ She has three names.🤫
All of the SH games have an incredible story, atmosphere and music. I heartily recommend all of them

@@marcelosouzaa1998 In the original the endings start with different values that either increase or decrease based on your actions. Leave starts with 5, Maria with 3, and In Water with 2, so in a first playthrough you're expected to get the leave ending, I assume the remake also works the same way.
Some things that affect the endings are: how you finish the coin puzzle, which rope you pull to solve the gallows puzzle, which apple you use for the mirror, after the fight against the two pyramid heads which door you go through (either the Scarlet egg or the Rust egg), how long do you stay at low health (extra points for In Water), how much health do you "overheal" (extra points for Leave), if you listen to the whole dialogue of Mary in the hallway before the final fight, if you check Mary's photo in the inventory, if you check Angela's knife in the inventory, if you read some messages around town (like the one that says "If you want to see Mary you should just die, but you might end up in a different place than Mary, James." Reading this message gives extra points to the In Water ending), if you fight too many enemies (extra points for In Water), if you avoid most enemies (extra points for Leave).
There's probably more things that can slightly affect your score for which ending you get, you probably ended up getting more points for the other endings.

@@User777Cd Definitely not the ideal outcome for James, but it certainly isn't a bad ending, in both the sense of it being an ending that punishes the player like SH1's bad ending and also from a writing perspective. James' suicidal ideation was hinted at throughout the game, namely through his encounters with Angela, and it's similar to Leave where he does recognize what he's done, but here he just cannot come to terms with it. It's dark and sad, but also realistic. It fits with the direction that the game's story goes, and there's a reason the original devs prefer it too even if it isn't the official ending. It's thematically appropriate for the tragic story that is Silent Hill 2. A thematically fitting ending is not a bad ending.
That one is Maria, where James learns nothing, feels little to no remorse for what he did, and is doomed to repeat the cycle with Maria. From a writing standpoint, it's also good, but it's definitely intended to be the obvious "bad ending" of the main three because James rejects completing his character arc.

Those scenes when he was about to turn around were scary for me as well, giving me the creeps. But whats crazy is, that this is exactly how the protagonist feels too!!! All the stuff he made up, all the psychotic horror, the monsters, were obviously an attempt from him to run away from the reality. And I'd take that every day, before seeing him to face his back seat. What a game.

Some people who made the games have expressed it as their favourite or most poetic, but openness to interpretation was always an important part of Silent Hill, so all endings being equally canon sort of fits the other design choices of these games better.

It used to be that James had killed her within the past week. He then lingered around town, half empty. He'd order flowers...with ones that represent love and hate. He'd reminisce about old music while getting drunk day in and day out, then one day he snapped and broke the record. Got so freaked out he tried to get it fixed, but didn't have the whole thing. Then, one day he was about to leave after all this sorrow, he thought about killing himself. Looked in the mirror....and suddenly...nothing was real. This from the sh2 novelization.
In both the og and remake, in certain scripted encounters if you return after making a little forward progress the areas are blocked off with crime tape.
There is nothing wrong with the town. Everyone is there going about their daily lives.
Here, the fog world and especially the other side in its wet, damp state reflect James' mental and emotional state.
They never returned, in part, because the hotel burned down sometime after they left, when a young girl stabbed her father and brother.
Elsewhere, a man is on the run after shooting a guy in the leg and killing the dog. Although Eddie never actually killed anyone, the many bodies of James and Angela can be found in his wake, as they repeat this cycle again and again until they see the demons as angels trying to guide them.
    Some may never find salvation.
But for James... his fate is in our hands, and if the outcome isn't good, we can try it again, leaving another body in purgatory.
In water is considered to be the canon ending by Masahiro Ito.

No, they never said that. There is no specific correct ending. At the beginning they wanted to make the ending "in water" the main one, but later they used "leave". You have the highest chance of this ending, so it can be said to be the most "canonical".
The ending in the water doesn't make sense for many reasons.
Because James suffered and eventually realized his wife's death and let her go. And after that, suicide looks just stupid. This is exactly what happens in the poor quality Polish remake.
Because the developers of the remake completely did not understand the meaning of the game and the nuances. They failed absolutely everything in the remake from the menu, gameplay, to the plot and voice acting.
