My ranking of the endings from least favorite to favorite: 8: Dog (just goofy, someone found that in the unpatched version of the game it was different and had the dog swap James’s character models with Maria, pyramid head, etc. For some reason they changed it) 7. In Water (super depressing but that letter HITS with this ending. It fits with the dreadful tone of the game. They made it a lot more impactful in this version. My only little problem is that James went through way too much just to give up at the end) 1. Stillness (perfect combo between leave and in water as it is somewhat hopeful and also properly addressed James’ guilt. Easily the most emotional scene and I wish it was available for a 1st playthrough)

Agreed. Some of the choices Julia made during gameplay -- repeatedly visiting Maria when she was bedridden in Brookhaven Hospital, for example -- had me worried she was going to end up with the Maria ending, and I did not want that to be her first impression of the game. So glad she got Escape for her first ending.
Stillness ending definitely has a new noise added in at the end that is probably the door opening. It would make no sense if he died considering he asked Mary “Will you wait for me?”. Also I interpreted him glancing back at the letter in the seat that he would then grab it with him out of the car.
I disagree. It doesn't make thematic sense for him to jump out the seat and throw his car into the lake. He doesn't read the letter either. Nor does the word 'Stillness' convey any sort of positive feeling. There's no door opening. It's the same sound in both endings.

No endings are canon. Told by tne creators. Depends on what you do in the game. Stilness is when james doesnt want to kill himself, but does understand his faults. I call the main 3 endings are Good - leave Sad - in water Bad- maria
In water is definitely a bad ending. Main character kill’s himself rather than living. I’m sick of the community going on about this being not a bad one. Its awful
@@User777Cd Definitely not the ideal outcome for James, but it certainly isn't a bad ending, in both the sense of it being an ending that punishes the player like SH1's bad ending and also from a writing perspective. James' suicidal ideation was hinted at throughout the game, namely through his encounters with Angela, and it's similar to Leave where he does recognize what he's done, but here he just cannot come to terms with it. It's dark and sad, but also realistic. It fits with the direction that the game's story goes, and there's a reason the original devs prefer it too even if it isn't the official ending. It's thematically appropriate for the tragic story that is Silent Hill 2. A thematically fitting ending is not a bad ending. That one is Maria, where James learns nothing, feels little to no remorse for what he did, and is doomed to repeat the cycle with Maria. From a writing standpoint, it's also good, but it's definitely intended to be the obvious "bad ending" of the main three because James rejects completing his character arc.
@@User777Cd it's bad but more on sad. Do you think Maria ending doesn't take the cake onn the most awful ending u can get? U killed ur wife and replace her with an imaginary girl. And you don't even accept the facct that you're a murderer. So... at least in in water. You accept you did a bad thing, you just can't handle what had happened.
Whats crazy to me is that, indeed, seeing him to look on the backseat, which would mean he would face the reality right upfront, is for me as Ive played the game scarier than all of the stuff before. Those scenes when he was about to turn around were scary for me as well, giving me the creeps. But whats crazy is, that this is exactly how the protagonist feels too!!! All the stuff he made up, all the psychotic horror, the monsters, were obviously an attempt from him to run away from the reality. And I'd take that every day, before seeing him to face his back seat. What a game.
In the Leave Ending James & Laura walk the cemetery and disappear into the fog. They both got their closure so now they can finally rest. There's only one road into Silent Hill & that's through the cemetery. Only one road out
As an old fan of the game I think the different endings are meant to reflects every player's character and state of mind. For me LEAVE is the only ending.
What’s crazy is that I had the water ending and still didn’t realize that it was Mary’s body in the backseat. I thought James turned around to look at the letter in the backseat after coming to the realization as to what it truly said. In no way did I think it was Mary’s body. I feel like I ruined the ending for myself because I didn’t realize that. I found out days after finishing the game that Mary’s body was in the backseat.
Don't know why the uploader put "Leave ending" as "true ending'. The creators of the original have said multiple times there is no "true" ending, all are equally canon.
I think after this i dont really recomend going throught the hole game from the 2001, cuz no one needs to play 8 more hours of anything, only if you really want to. But PLZ, just search and watch two scenes: the Maria Labirinth Scene and the Mary Last Letter from the old version. IMO these were better there, but the rest im really happy with and the Remake slaps (and the Dog Ending from the original too just bc of the credits lmao)
22:21 The Maria ending is James going fully delusional and replacing Mary with Maria even though Maria isn't real. And with Maria coughing the cycle will start all over again.
The games...in chronological order: sh arcade. Sh 2, sh 0, sh 4, sh 1, sh homecoming, sh3, sh 1 semi-remake (shattered memories), sh downpour, sh the short message... (ascension isn't a game its a travesty so it doesn't count). Of these the only homecoming lore is completely incompatible with the rest, mainly because it ties more into the movie lore than the game lore.
Honestly. The forgivable part is what he did to Mary because she asked him to do it and is legal depending on circumstance as far as I am aware. It was an agreed thing. What isn’t forgivable is why he did it. But after what silent hill likely did to his psyche I think he deserves some form of redemption. I don’t think he cheated. He lusted for other women but I highly doubt he did anything. As far as I know the canon ending. I’m pretty sure it’s the in water ending. Unfortunately
James stay with Mary for 3 years fighting together against the decease... He's not selfish In the end he killed her because Mary became the reason he was living a hell life... He became crazy
The original creators have multiple times told for the first Silent Hill games no ending was meant to be "the true ending". Some people who made the games have expressed it as their favourite or most poetic, but openness to interpretation was always an important part of Silent Hill, so all endings being equally canon sort of fits the other design choices of these games better.
It used to be that James had killed her within the past week. He then lingered around town, half empty. He'd order flowers...with ones that represent love and hate. He'd reminisce about old music while getting drunk day in and day out, then one day he snapped and broke the record. Got so freaked out he tried to get it fixed, but didn't have the whole thing. Then, one day he was about to leave after all this sorrow, he thought about killing himself. Looked in the mirror....and suddenly...nothing was real. This from the sh2 novelization. In both the og and remake, in certain scripted encounters if you return after making a little forward progress the areas are blocked off with crime tape. There is nothing wrong with the town. Everyone is there going about their daily lives. Here, the fog world and especially the other side in its wet, damp state reflect James' mental and emotional state. They never returned, in part, because the hotel burned down sometime after they left, when a young girl stabbed her father and brother. Elsewhere, a man is on the run after shooting a guy in the leg and killing the dog. Although Eddie never actually killed anyone, the many bodies of James and Angela can be found in his wake, as they repeat this cycle again and again until they see the demons as angels trying to guide them. Some may never find salvation. But for James... his fate is in our hands, and if the outcome isn't good, we can try it again, leaving another body in purgatory. In water is considered to be the canon ending by Masahiro Ito.
No, they never said that. There is no specific correct ending. At the beginning they wanted to make the ending "in water" the main one, but later they used "leave". You have the highest chance of this ending, so it can be said to be the most "canonical". The ending in the water doesn't make sense for many reasons. Because James suffered and eventually realized his wife's death and let her go. And after that, suicide looks just stupid. This is exactly what happens in the poor quality Polish remake. Because the developers of the remake completely did not understand the meaning of the game and the nuances. They failed absolutely everything in the remake from the menu, gameplay, to the plot and voice acting.

No endings are canon. Told by tne creators.
Depends on what you do in the game.
Stilness is when james doesnt want to kill himself, but does understand his faults.
I call the main 3 endings are
Good - leave
Sad - in water
Bad- maria
In water is definitely a bad ending.
Main character kill’s himself rather than living. I’m sick of the community going on about this being not a bad one. Its awful
@@User777Cd Well, the main character didn't kill himself out of the blue, did he? He did kill his wife before that
@@User777Cd Definitely not the ideal outcome for James, but it certainly isn't a bad ending, in both the sense of it being an ending that punishes the player like SH1's bad ending and also from a writing perspective.
@@User777Cd its the most realistic
29:56 the first time I see James smiling 🥲
Such an interesting discussion on the endings. In Water and Stillness are so tragic
That’s what makes them great. Ppl love a tragedy more than a redemption.
Stillness is a more realistic version of Leave imo. James doesn’t kill himself but is obviously very affected by the events of SH2
Great content!
If you ever play the OG , it would be cool to see if you do things differently trying to get a different ending.
you're everywhere you're so julia
Bliss is my favourite that's for sure
SH2 is not just good, but they influence all the horror game industry that we know. 😮
Min 2:20 that’s how stress and anxiety looks like … 😢
In the Leave Ending James & Laura walk the cemetery and disappear into the fog. They both got their closure so now they can finally rest. There's only one road into Silent Hill & that's through the cemetery. Only one road out
you have to watch the unpatched version of Stillness its beautiful
As an old fan of the game I think the different endings are meant to reflects every player's character and state of mind.
For me LEAVE is the only ending.
nmk
I got the In Water ending on my first playthrough.
Rebirth is the occult ending. Sort of ties into silent hill 1 and 3.
Please watch the original leave ending from the OG. It is so much better than the remake imo. And feels like a much happier ending.
Both are good.
@@RicochetForce that’s why I added “imo”.
You empathize with the story to silent Hill o no?
Should play the og sh2 you can emulate it on pc
I don't consider Bliss to be a good ending. He drinks White Claudia which is a drug. The Bliss ending makes me cry more so than the other endings.
Wzatch the hidden easter eggs from the game compi😊lations

You're such a sassy goofball 😁
But the truth is, the UFO ending is actually the real ending, canon one
Dragon's dogma 2 please 🙏
The sudden moan - SH3 reference.
James stay with Mary for 3 years fighting together against the decease... He's not selfish
In the end he killed her because Mary became the reason he was living a hell life... He became crazy
@@fernandoalencar5287 he admits he was selfish
The water ending is considered the canon ending for James Sunderland in Silent Hill 2, and references to his fate can be found in Silent Hill 4
Wrong.
We arent entirely sure
Team silent always said that "in water" is the most true ending
