Wow. I am still a little speechless about this one!!! Seriously 10/10 horror game. I loved the feelings of disgust, fear, sadness, confusion, and more that it gave me. The performances by all the actors (especially James and Angela’s) had me incredibly invested. I keep thinking of all the details in the game and wondering what thoughts or feelings they represented for James. Ugh. I can see why this is such a classic, thank you so much for joining me for this one!
Congratulations. Now that you have finished your playthrough I recommend you to watch some videos whose authors have done a remarkable job to analyze and understand Silent Hill. Max Derrat and Uninstall Paul are the best UA-camrs when it comes to understanding all the symbolisms behind Silent Hill. In the history of video games Silent Hill has had a great influence on the games that came after it like Alan Wake, Amnesia, Soma, Outlast, The Evil Within, Tormented Souls, Visage, Detention......

@@furynvm Yeah, I really like the remake, there is definitely a better direction in the voice acting, they changed a few lines and cleaned some stuff up. The bosses are much better, they nailed the atmosphere. I like some of the additions (explore the town before the apartments, the strip club scene). My only complaints really are too much combat (I think I killed like 3x the enemies in remake that I did in OG), pacing (some environments begin to drag), and the Mary/Maria VA. I feel like she’s much better in the OG version in the cell scene for sure. The “I’m not your Mary” is so tame in the remake in comparison. There is no edge, no bite. At the end (hallway walk, letter reading) I think the OG version has more emotion in her voice, more voice cracking like she’s in the edge of tears. And I also think they fucked up the chase segment, but this isn’t on Maria, it’s on the direction or James’ VA. When Maria is stabbed at the elevator in the remake, James is basically completely mute, stunned, looking at her impaled, before he drops to his knees. In the OG, you get a “Noooooooooo!!!!! Mariaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!” and it just shows James’ despair at what has transpired much more clearly. Additionally, in the chase, Maria suddenly being behind you for the cutscene is a little weird. In the OG, she’s always trailing you and you see Pyramid Head more. I think it’s scarier with the fixed camera angles vs what the remake does here. Best ending is In Water IMO.
@@furynvmNot for me. The original had to be overacted because you couldn’t really see body language or facial expressions. This felt well-acted to me and less like a caricature.
As someone whose father passed from Alzheimers I really get this game. People who have never had a close loved one get a terrible disease that led to abuse will never understand quite as much what James went through. YES, what he did was wrong, but it wasn't evil. He's not a sociopath or a psychopath. He's a normal person who lost it for a moment. I didn't but the thoughts of hate came into my mind numerous times. My father was very abusive due to the Alzheimers. Pure evil words would come out of his mouth. He would throw things, threaten my mother and yell such poison. The worst moment is when he said he was going to get his shotgun if I didn't leave (I helped take care of him). He went into the closet but we had hid the shells. After this I sold the gun to a cousin. What James did was terrible, but dealing with a sick person who is also abusive due to the drugs and pain is one of the toughest things someone can go through. James both released Mary from her pain and his. It wasn't right but it is understandable.
Exactly this. To be clear... I am NOT defending James actions. My wife who has struggled for 30 years with extreme OCD, had a complete mental breakdown during COVID. It was extremely bad. I spent 2 years watching my wife crumble away. I didn't recognize her anymore and everyday was traumatic. She... well... did not treat me or my kids very well as she was in a constant state of pain and struggle 24/7. It had extreme effects of the mental health of myself and my kids (one who also suffers OCD and more). When you live with that everyday all day for 2 years... as James says in the Maria ending... "you are very.... tired". It completely breaks you down in ways no one can ever imagine or understand unless they went through something like that. It's why I relate to this game so much as I see things from both sides. Again, I'm not defending James actions in the end... but I do have empathy for the horrific situation both he and Mary were put in. Simply put, the disease killed the "person" they each were, 3 years ago. It's a tragic story... and makes you think in ways you never wanted to before.
Same here, but mother instead of father. James makes me think of caregiver depression and burnout, something not very known. Of course there is more than just that to the themes and game, but it is one element of this complex narrative, and James specifically, that can help to explain the story.
This happened to my father too, as dementia started, it’s very painful journey to see someone you love suddenly change and mentally deteriorate, the beginning is the hardest since we didn’t know why he suddenly changed, he would say things to my mother that I never thought i would hear my father say in my life, but it’s all because of dementia. But as he slowly realized he had dementia, I heard him pray many times not to live like this any longer.
In case you're confused about the chronology, 3 years ago was when Mary got sick. To James, it was as if she had died at that moment, because she changed a lot, both in appearance and behavior. James killed Mary no more than a week ago, and felt extremely guilty soon after. So he put her body in the backseat of his car, covered by a sheet or blanket, and drove to Silent Hill with the intention of killing himself at Toluca Lake, while at the same time fulfilling, in a sense, Mary's wish of visiting the town again. But during the drive or upon arrival, he suffered a mental breakdown and became delusional, clinging to that idea that Mary had died of her illness 3 years ago. He still needed a reason for being at Silent Hill, and his subconscious still desired punishment, so the town manifested to him part of the letter that Laura was carrying in order to push him forward. You know what happened next... And when you think about it, Maria is a really tragic character. Despite being a manifestation of the town and having a role to fulfill, she still has a mind of her own. She's her own person ("I'm not your Mary."), she really wanted company, she was genuinely scared at the hospital, and she definitely felt a lot of pain every time she died.
@@WenGlen2 Depending on how close he and Mary lived to Silent Hill, and they likely lived pretty close considering they seemed like a pretty boring and sensible couple who would vacation close to home, he might have killed Mary a few hours ago.
I know it's late to mention this now, but I recently wrote a similar comment on someone else’s video and realized that it’s more accurate to say that James suffered a psychotic break (a term that actually appears in the original SH2) rather than a mental or nervous breakdown. The latter doesn’t involve psychosis, like amnesia or delusions. And James seems to experience both: he forgets key details about his past and forms false memories, such as believing that Mary died three years ago.
You actually got the “best” ending here. This game deals with psychological horror, things that people actually deal with (which, imo, makes it scarier). This is the best ending.
As someone who played the original SH2 the day it came out I really appreciate this play through. Being able to share someone’s first experience with this game in such a fun and genuine way was amazing. The respect to the material and disrespect to all the windows made this one of the best play throughs I’ve watched. Thank you.
You're the first female streamer that 1. Listened to Mary talk to James in the long hallway and didn't just run through and ignore it (triggering the bad ending) 2. Got the good ending, symbolising James being able to move on, according to Mary's wishes, and not killing himself. In other words it says a lot about who you are, you're an awesome person. You actually care about playing a game well. I saw countless streamers just run through as fast as possible because all they want is to complete the game for views and move to the next one.
I've been watching your playthroughs for a few years now and I was very excited to watch you play this. I tried to watch other streamers play but could not get into them. They would talk to chat too much, not pay attention to cut scenes, or constantly make stupid or corny jokes. You seem to genuinely enjoy video games, you seem invested in what you're playing, you have a chill sense of humor, and you're not negative all the time. I appreciate that so much. I actually logged onto Twitch to watch you play, which I never do, because I just couldn't wait to watch you experience one of my favorite games of all-time. This remake did not disappoint and you did not disappoint :). Thank you so much Julia for being you. Also, I hope you try out Silent Hill 3. I think it's actually scarier than 2.
The Leave ending always felt like the right one to me, especially if you believe James and Laura buried Mary's body in the Silent Hill Cemetery together before they leave. I think the fact that Mary wanted James to live on even after she died makes James more likely to seek atonement rather than punishment for what he did. To me, the In Water ending feels like what James was going to do before the town of Silent Hill took hold of him.
I was about to say this about Mary being in the backseat but you beat me to it! Totally agree with you that the In Water is probably the true ending or at least what James’s intention is.
@@bombird8813 To be fair the "Good ending" has always been the weakest in every game of the franchise since it's usually very simplistic like "the nightmare is over, you have grown after this experience and now you can return to a normal life", the "Bad Endings" are always more deep and intense to witness and analyse.
I hate to tell you... Guy Cihi (James Sunderland's original voice actor) used to prefer the 'Leave' ending as well, but in his own words: "I saw Team Silent put their hearts into In the Water ending." I know it's a sad ending, but I think it's very beautiful, even poetic. Btw, the official japanese novel of the game also chose that ending so, connect the dots... ¿Did James Sunderland really killed Eddie Dombrowski? ¿Is he now a fugitive for the murder of 2 people? 😱 ¿Was Laura wandering all alone in an abandoned town all this time?
I think it's a general misconception by western people that Silent Hill 2 has James, Angela and Eddie being judged by "someone else" as if in some Christian hell. It seems much more to be that they are doing it to themselves. Angela being in this place does not mean that some sentient thing decided she is guilty, it's because she herself feels like that. The game is not passing judgment in itself, but portrays people that are trapped in this horrible place by partly their own actions, but also the situations other people put them in, and it's up for us to take from it what we will. Some say James is a monster, some probably wouldn't. Two valid interpretations. To me it seems mostly Western players with the cultural background of Christianity who are so used to games, movies and books making everything easy for them and outright telling them who is good, who is bad, who tend to take it as if god is judging James, and him being in this situation is proof enough that he sinned and deserves it or something.
As a Western Christian myself, I agree people are seeing this wrong. They are thinking Silent Hill is a Purgatory, when in reality it's a Limbo. Different things
The town doesn’t care if they get redemption or not and people fail to understand that It isn’t doing anything itself to better people its simply manifesting their psyche
"If that's true the why do you look so sad" His saddest when telling her that show's that's not how he really felt, he didn't hate her, he loved her more than anyone could love another person. He hated her illness and the widge it drove between them. Mary had been sick for 3 years not dead for 3, James killed her literally about a week ago, to stop her suffering, to free her and himself but afterwards he immediately regretted it. The trauma of that "deed done" put him in a stake amnesia and that's when the call of Silent Hill began. The story of this game is simple but writing and the layers of said story is beyond words. An absolute horror masterpiece and an emotional tale brilliantly told about loss, grief, trauma and human nature.
Yeah, Mary's comment is to show that James is, in a way, still lying to himself. Those feelings were a part of why he did what he did, but they weren't the only reason. Part of why he did what he did was because he did indeed want to give Mary mercy. But he can't get over the fact that there was selfish motivations too. Mary doesn't say that he's wrong in that assessment, but she does point out that if it was the absolute truth he would be glad, and not in despair.
Angela did not just kill he father btw, she also killed her brother (he was also an abuser) and was trying to find her momma to kill her as well, cause her mother abandoned her and never tried to stop her father and her brother from doing what they were doing. That’s why she says "she is the only one left, maybe then I can rest". Eddie keeps killing his bullie but James sees himself as the dead bodies (if you pay attention you will see how much the dead ppl look like him), that is a way his subconscious is punishing him due to his guilt.
An interesting fact. in the OG, they made every corpse use same model as james because of PS2 limitations. but it also just worked and fan theories came out of it. blooper just stuck with that tradition cause over the years the fan theories spun up idea it was part of james torment. I don't think that was ever cannonized but none the less it "just works"
Nah, you know what. It's not like that. Angela never showed hatred or resentment towards her mother. On the contrary, she always referred to her with an enormous hope of seeing her again. I feel like she just wanted to hug her and cry in her arms, be comforted. Do you know what they say about Purgatory and why souls get trapped there? "Mama, I was looking for you! Now you're the only one left. Maybe then... Maybe then I can rest." She needed to say goodbye to her and maybe forgive each other.
Honestly, the new Pyramid Heads fight ost is brilliant, better than the original, and the original was a masterpiece. Having Akira Amaoka himself composing for the remake was awesome, I'm really glad he could give us a second version of all these incredible soundtracks.
SH2 is a game that takes retrospective analysis to fully understand what's going on, and a lot of it is still under interpretation. But like Harry described in SH1, the town is making someone's horrific nightmares and fears real. This time it's not Alessa's, but Jame's, Eddie's and Angela's. The fact Harry describes them as 'real' means they are not hallucinations, even though everything is symbolism like the monsters James encounters having major symbolic references to James. Some times James stumbles upons other people's version of Silent Hill or there's a little overlap, like how it suddenly cold in the second and third encounters with Eddie or facing Abstract Daddy with Angela. Also at the end with Angela we step into her burning version of Silent Hill. Maria is just a creation of Jame's version of SH. Laura, who in an innocent child, doesn't have any monsters in her version of SH, that's why she can run off and not get hurt and questions why James won't let her run off on her own. There's so much more too. Everything crafted with this story is so fascinating to break down
After James final meeting with Angela all the remaining monsters are dying as they are no longer needed. Only pyramid head remains as he is the manifestation of his guilt. My opinion, the spitting enemies represent the helplessness James felt at watching Mary slowly die and being unable to do anything.
James says that Mary died 3 years ago that is when the illness started, she changed so much that for him she was no longer the same Mary found her peace before she died but James was already broken, for him killing her was liberating him but although I did it out of hatred James loved his wife and they were happy until his illness.Just after killing her, all the guilt and regret comes over him, so he takes the corpse in his car to SH. The game begins in the bathroom because there he has the breakdown that makes him deny that he killed her, that's why he trembles, People believe that James was unfaithful but that is not true since everything sexual about SH is his sexual frustration That's why there are nurses because James saw them when he visited Mary and I guess he has a leg fetish for obvious reasons. Does that make him a pig? Not for me since he is a man and he is repressed, in short fucking masterpiece
Many people call James a monster, but let's be human. James killed his wife because he couldn't stand the situation he was in. He didn't do it because he was a bad person, because as Mary said, "If that's true, why do you look so sad?" James suffers because What he did. And before you tell me, I don't justify James, but I do believe that people demonize him. the monster here is angela's dad he really is the worst of all
@@Elganzo343 Exactly. What James did isn't justifiable, but it's a FAR more complicated situation than "welp, James was evil" which is, unfortunately, what a lot of people seem to take away from the game. I really don't understand how that can be someone's conclusion, they would have to have not been paying attention to come away with such a black and white view of it. Jame's head was a torrent of emotions; frustration at the doctors for not taking better care of Mary, frustration at Mary's treatment of him (her yelling at him and getting angry due to her own frustration and anguish at her situation), frustration because he feels like his life has been taken from him and he's now stuck in this horrible situation, and also anguish at seeing his wife suffering and hearing her say that she wants die so the pain can end. Just imagine what that kind of thing would do to someone. It's not surprising James' mind is broken.
There's so much that we can talk about here, but I wanted to clean up the time line a bit. When James says Mary died three years ago he's actually referring to when she was first diagnosed with her terminal illness. That's when the Mary he loved died and that's who he's looking for in Silent Hill. In reality Mary died very recently, possibly the same day that James arrives in Silent Hill. Her corpse is still in the back seat of his car! I also want to talk about the book quote at 2:11:03 (is it the Bible? I never read it): "Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean: remove the evil of your deeds from My sight". This reminds me of the very first scene in the game where James splashed himself with water in the bathroom. My interpretation is that that is the moment his mind completely snapped and he woke up in this new reality that he made for himself: Mary died three years ago and he got a letter from her saying she was waiting for him in Silent Hill. The storytelling is immaculate, I love this game so much.
What a legendary playthrough Julia, the best on UA-cam. Silent Hill is officially better than RE in my book after playing this. This game was a pleasant surprise for me. I never played the OG either and didn’t know what to expect, but boy howdy it was A LOT more than i was expecting. Bloober Team really knocked this one out of the park.
James and Mary met at a house party held by a mutual friend. Their affection evolved from a blazing passion to a peaceful and stable relationship. Before Mary and James were married, James would listen to Mary play the piano. Mary liked to play the piano and even though she wasn't very good at it, James still loved to hear her play. Prior to the events of Silent Hill 2, Mary and James decided to take a vacation in Silent Hill after reading a brochure for the town. They stayed in the Lakeview Hotel, where James recorded a videotape of Mary. Mary stated in the videotape that she loved the town and would love to go to Silent Hill again one day. James accidentally forgot the videotape in the hotel and the couple left Silent Hill. Unfortunately, three years prior to the game, Mary was struck with a terminal disease, and she deteriorated to the point of having violent mood swings, lashing out at James in anger telling him to leave her alone and in a matter of seconds apologizing and begging him not to leave her and stay with her. Her doctor predicted she would have less than three years left to live and told James that there was no effective treatment for her condition. James questioned Mary's doctors about her illness, and could not believe they would just let Mary die. He searched through medical books for information about Mary's illness but never found anything useful. Later in her illness, James visited Mary less frequently because she was emotionally volatile. Her mood swings left him bewildered about what was "right" to do. Unable to cope with their suffering, he eventually snapped and killed Mary via suffocation in cold blood when Mary was allowed to go home. After confirmed that Mary was indeed dead, James carried her body to his car and put her in the backseat, not the trunk. It is unknown how much time passed between Mary's death and the game - the novelization says it was "just a few days ago", and if James lived in Ashfield, the drive between Ashfield and Silent Hill would be "about a half a day".
They really could not help themselves either. They were so good the whole way through. She sees the VHS and suddenly its a deluge of their theories, trying to influence her experience and thoughts with their own interpretations, and with it some sprinkling of back seating.
This game really is an amazing mind trip. When I played it 22 years ago it changed my life, and how I saw what video games and storytelling could be. Nothing else like it had come before it. As someone who saw his wife crumble away from illness over 2 years, I can relate to what both James and May went through. Both people are victims of the disease, and no one can understand what affect that has on a caretaker / spouse unless they go through it. It can break one down in ways we never thought possible. The disease killed the "person" that Mary was 3 years ago when she first got the disease. (she was most likely killed very recently based on other indicators) You also are shown this when Maria was found dead the 2nd time in the hospital bed, when you see her with the start of the same disease that Mary had. There are so many visual cues throughout the game to see. You see the home James and Mary lived in (and the bedroom Mary was killed in) being shown over and over in the Apartment buildings (where you found her hanky where PH mimicked similar acts in the apartment), the Labyrinth, etc. You can also hear Mary's "gasp" from the videotape at different important parts of the game. The monsters are visual representations of Mary and her sickness as well as James sexual frustrations (lying figures throwing up, all monsters having feminine / sexual tones). "Where did you get those shoes?" LOL. The locations changing to represent memories of both James and Mary's own otherworld hell (the hospital covered in dirty sheets, the rot, etc). There is a freshly dug (and open) grave in the graveyard on the first play in Silent Hill at the start. All the bodies in Silent Hill are James, alluding to the possibility that he is stuck in some sort of loop and he kept failing until you clear the game. The "memories" from the first game add a nice emphasis to this idea while also being nice easter eggs for players of the original. It also explains why the game and puzzles are somewhat jumbled and different than the original (while allowing the game to be fresh and new for all players). Angela's Abstract Daddy sequence was absolutely nightmarish in the remake compared to the original. If you watch the burning stairs scene with her (makes me bawl every time), you will see "Daddy" is now on the wall in a frame similar to the Abstract Daddy monster... only now he's been slit down the middle (including his "stuff" now being gone). You aren't meant to like / agree with James actions, but its ok to have empathy for the horrible situation he and Mary were both put in, as the disease made them each a "monster" in their own way... and its a tragic story all round. It's meant to make you think in ways you never did before... and its a special experience you'll never forget. I'm just so happy I was there to relive it watching you on live stream Julia. You were a joy to watch, and a great example of how other streamers should act when playing a game this special. Thank you for sharing that with us.
The Lakeview Hotel area reminds me so much of my old grandparents retirement facility before they passed. It really looks similar minus the dim lighting, of course. Its a bit uncanny but also a bit comforting in a weird way after the horrors of the prior prison area.
Thank you for your playthrough, Julia! It was interesting to see the reaction of someone who didn't play the original. I have thoroughly enjoyed the game, but I think Bloopers overextended it a bit. The original was twice shorter.
Fun fact: when you first get to the hotel, the hotel is still under the effects of the town’s “otherworld” or “hellworld” the rundown and decaying version of the hotel is actually the normal “fog world” hotel. I don’t remember if it’s mentioned in this game or the OG, but somewhere it says that the hotel suffered from a fire, caused by the heater in the basement(the one that says”I’m Johnny, one hot guy)
@@furynvm 4 is good, but definitely less liked than the first 3. It’s also readily available on GoG, not saying that a graphical upgrade wouldn’t be nice. SH1-3 aren’t readily available on Steam or GoG, which means they need the remake more. SH1 and 3 are also the two movies, which furthered the knowledge of them to a larger audience as compared to SH4.
Congrats! You got the "good" ending. If you're curious though, some say the "Japanese" ending is more lore accurate. But, I'm partial to the ending you got. Glad you enjoyed your time in Jimothy's Silent Hill. GG!
BTW a fun detail. Eddies "otherword" or nightmare is always cold, related to the freezer of his sins. You don't actually see his nightmare til you fight him at end but every encounter with eddie he has breath when he speaks cause his interpretation of town was that it was always very cold. You could be in a warm theatre and james has no breath but eddie's breath is like it's freezing. And angela tells you that her otherword is always on fire. but again you didn't see it til her end as well. I'm not sure they explain really why you get to see both of their otherwords in the end but it's probably just due to fact it's in both of those moments that eddie and angela accepted their otherworld. Also, near end of game james began to break free of his otherworldly. The hotel burned down historically like 1-2 years ago. When he first entered, in his otherword he saw it the way he remembered not way it truly was. But as he accepted what happened with mary and full faced his guilt the illusion slowly then completely broke. At this point reality started to come through. Also, related to other comments but all the corpses in city are of james. This was more of an easter egg blooper did to honor OG. the OG used james model for all corpses because of PS2 limitations. it just made sense. Over years that spun up a fan theory james is in a time loop and all corpses are james previous loops but that's not cannon at all. It was literally just done by a technical limitation and of course blooper respected the fans dedication to OG and just kept it going :D Plus in silent hill it just kinda works anyways cause it just adds more head explosion and theories to mix. But just based on towns history in general, it's never been about time loops at all and you either survive your nightmare or you don't.
Thanks for the stream, Julia! It was great, and I love this game. Also didn’t understand all this hate for James in chat… what he did was bad, but it is clear that Mary was suffering from the terrible disease, slowly dying. I agree, partially James killed her because of his selfish motivation, but I think he also wanted to help Mary to end her suffering. He had a terrible feeling of guilt since then, so he is not a psychopath like Eddie, who enjoyed killing. Angela has killed her father and brother too, nevertheless had unquestionable support for her actions. Maybe it’s because the abuse topic is less controversial than euthanasia.
I recommend looking up the meaning behind all the monsters. Almost every visual and everything you see In this game represents something. Like abstract daddy When he was chasing you and wrecking the walls representing how he Was wrecking their home Figuratively. A lot of the notes and such we're directed to james.
2:24:28 The monsters were created by Silent Hill itself to torment James with his guilt for killing Mary but now that he's facing up to it they've served their purpose.
Hey Julia, as an aside from the content in this video, I am wondering. Have you played Shadow of the Colossus before? If not, you should. Short, but incredible experience.
There is no other game that deals with such human and complex issues with the empathy that Silent Hill 2 does. Putting yourself in the skin of the characters in this work is very complicated and requires a great deal of human and emotional understanding. Love, hate, death, resentment, depression, sadness... These are some of the topics and emotions that this game is able to capture and transmit to tell us a story that, within the horror, is very real. James' actions are not justified at all, but they can be understood, because if there is one thing that this game teaches us, it is that people are complex beings, with a lot of grey areas that mask our personality and that, led by critical moments in our lives, lead us to make very questionable choices. But at the end of the story, it is forgiveness what allowed Mary to rest in peace and James to continue with his life, having accepted the truth and the punishment, being able to leave Silent Hill as a new person. This game is simply a masterpiece, one of the best videogames ever created, i'm glad that you enjoyed it and shared it with us, hoping to see you play more Silent Hill in the future.
I love the play through. One thing I was thinking I don't remember reading or hearing anyone say this but , when he said he hated her because he wanted his life back, did he mean his life when she was healthy and they were so happy? Not meaning he wanted to be single or with other women? Watching someone die over years and wish it was like it was at the beginning before they got sick is pretty natural IMO.
Angela's story is very sad. You see, it was when I first realized what James sees and what Angela sees in Silent Hill is totally different. Angela soon realized that it's not a town. When she said to James at the park, "Get out of here? Where?" Angela realized it's not the town that's the problem; they are wrong. And when Angela said it's always like this for me, it was obvious that James doesn't see the flames, and he doesn't know Angela is going to end his life. But Angela can only see hell, the flames, the loneliness, the pain, and the suffering. And of course, she can only relate to her mother because of this. She needs to find her mother to rest and finally forgive herself. But when she realizes she can't, then her story and fate are sealed.
the elevator thing where you drop all your items is much more creepy in ther OG in this remake it didnt feel like that, in the OG it makes you think theres an invisible person in the elevator or something. since there was an invisible enemy in the prison, you were used to think there were invisible things in the OG
Idk if theres a paper or note regarding this, but i wonder if angela burned her house down after stabbing her father with her mother n brother still inside??. She implys her "otherworld" is constantly ablaze with fire all around her. So obviously fire is a big part of her guilt/baggage..i also like how angela is the only "sinner/judged" character that does not turn into a monster or boss fight herself.. its like the game wanted her to very specifically frame her "sin" as not on the same teir of "sin" as the others, because of her abuse/trauma and the justifiable nature of her crime. UNLESS she accidentally burned the house down with the mother n brother inside..which again atleast in terms of angelas "mama" we know the mother was a enabler at best, or a accomplise to her daughters abuse so there is definitely "fuel" to that theory. The brother tho at no point was spoken of as either a morally "good/bad" person so we can only assume the brother is just a innocent party in this "family fuckshit' gping on. My point is angela was never depicted as a "monster" because her "sin" was the only one that was forgivable from a morality standpoint. Angela seems to be stuck in silent hill from more of a self punishment "penance" type deal because she MISTAKENLY still believes the abuse she suffered was somehow "her fault" and perpetuated further by her dumbass "mama"!! so angelas is being trapped there by a burden she shpuldnt even be carrying!!! which does a fantastic job showing how much abuse victims carry with guilt that should have never been theirs to egin with, they subtley showed that silent hill doesn't discriminate in terms of where the guilt comes from and/or if that guilt was even warranted in the 1st place. If the person in question has any kind of traumatic burdens whatsoever warrented or otherwise, the town will trap ur ass there and MAKE u "work it out".. in the case of angela, im afraid she was never able to let go..the one innocent adult in silent hill is doomed only because shei nsists on holding onto guilt that shouldnt have never been her n fuck her mom for making her believe the burden is on her.smh.
As promised i ll drop any info here: Maria was the idolized version of Mary, what james wanted from Mary when she was sick, so hotter, avaible and wanted to be protected Maria is the only character that is not real Each character sees silent hills differently. Laura she went there for Mary but she has no sin so she is fine and sees no monsters. Angela sees fire and Eddie ice All the others sees monsters but in their own way Each monster represents something for James. About the nurses: The baby face symbolizes James and Mary's desire for a child. The suffocation that the Nurses experience is also representative of James's subconscious memory of smothering Mary with a pillow. The red squares covering the mouths symbolize "shrieking insanity," particularly Mary's anger and verbal abuse against James. about the mandarin (the enemies that stays underground/or roof : Mandarin symbolizes feelings of overwhelming, incomprehensible anguish and helplessness. For this reason, they are not permitted to stand above ground. The novelization also mentions they originated from a desire to "escape" The “cage monster” in the hospital (when Laura locks you in) it represents Mary badmouthing James in her last days (thats why its in a bed like and has a mouth). And so on.
Not yet, but people are hoping it drops as a surprise DLC in future given the success of base game. Especially since they did have hints of it in base game. when you go near manor from that scenario, maria makes comments about it being familiar.
Julia, please do yourself a favor and at the very least watch the OG leave ending. I kid you not that, as much as I love the remake, the OG ending hits 10x harder. Mary’s OG voice actress reading the letter gave the best vocal performance I’ve ever heard in a game. It’s the exclamation mark❗️ and the best closer I’ve ever seen in a game. I recommend this one: ua-cam.com/video/Qfuqquil9vg/v-deo.htmlsi=K3MYsLp6Qu6lE9ny
This is the best, fluffiest ending. He moved on and adopted Laura. I'd wish Maria could join them, since she was also innocent in this. Real person with real feelings created by Silent Hill powers just to torment James. SH2: Born from a Wish ending is super sad.
@@furynvm She's her own person, but she's also construct of insane James' subconscious, much like Pyramid Head. To punish him. She wanted to kill herself when she found out. Exist, be killed and get reborn just to torture somebody you were created to also love. While Maria herself also wants to live and fears pain. Born from a Wish should have been included in remake.
"Innocent" "real person" No she isn't lol She's not real she's literally a monster created by James and the town. She's not "her own person" in any way.
@@jimbeam8338 Nope. That's why there is Born from the Wish story to clarify she's real person with own feelings. And it was confirmed by devs she will continue to exist as long as James wants her. She knows and wants to continue to exist, so it's easy to understand her desperation. They also debunked fan theories that she or entirety of SH2 story is James' hallucination (since he's insane already before arrival to Silent Hill).
Maria most definitely is not "real". She is a pure manifestation from James' delusions. The original devs have confirmed this multiple times. She does not exist outside of James' head.
You honestly finished with too much ammo and healing, so to really see you in your element I'd love to see a hard play through. I want to see you actually play the game with more of a challenge that shows you having to utilize more resources in order to progress. You make a lot of games look too easy, but if you play on hard mode that'd be sick
It’s so great seeing someone experience the last part of this game in 2024. I think the ending you got is meant to be more morally ambiguous than it seems. I think it’s likely James isn’t saying goodbye to the actual (ghost of) Mary but rather to a memory of her. And her self-pitying self-hating thoughts are probably just her trying to cope with dying, she isn’t hint-hint asking for euthanasia. Also James wasn’t caring for her he kind of abandoned her to the hospital. She probably wanted James to tell her she’s wrong when she calls herself a disgusting burden.
I really enjoy the new wave of Silent Hill 2 Fans and witnessing the shock of the ending. And mostly women playing the game. and the fact about James / Mary / Maria / Angela. And their reactions to those key moments. I really Hope Konami see the overwhelming good reviews and new fans for the franchise to give us Silent Hill 1 and 3 Remake. And maybe allowing Harry Mason as a better male protagonist with his search of his daughter. to flip to the James of it all. lol
The Remake is so good. But the OG is far superior experience. The Gen Z "gamers" always think the new games always better just because yes 😂 Edit: I am also Gen Z but i can see how people of my age are so imateur
I have to disagree, this remake beats the original in pretty much every aspect in my opinion, maybe the original soundtrack was better but it could just be me not being used to this new renditions of the songs. If there's something that I could say it's better in the original has to be the camera angles, since the game was made with tank controls and fixed camera angles at some areas it helped a lot in creations some creepy shots where you can't see what lies ahead or makes you feel observed, since the remake has the "over the shoulder camera" most of the cinematographic cameral angles are reserved to cutscenes. In terms of overall gameplay the remake is way more immersive. Fighting was never a strong point of the Silent Hill games, it was always very simplistic (just hold the attack button until the monsters drop, then stomp, easy win) and most enemies relied on being weird and creepy to be effective rather than being an actual threat to the player since they could be easily ignored by running past them. In the remake every monster feels like a threat if you aren't careful, the narrow hallways help with making every encounter feel like an actual obstacle in your path. In terms of story and monster design is just like the original, nothing was really added or removed to make the design go in a different direction, but even then the remake made better use of some monsters and improved upon them: - The "Lying Figures" (first monster that spits acid) were kept mostly the same but they have a better range of attack compared to the original making them feel more dangerous in close quarters, the remake also made better use of their "crawling", in the original it was only relevant to scare the player by making one show up from underneath some cars and to let them escape before you could stomp them, but in the remake they use it for mobility, they charge at James and try to disorient him by moving swiftly across the floor. The remake also added the ones that spew acid before dying to surprise you if you tried to stomp them after knocking them down, an overall improvement compared to the original. - The mannequins were the most improved monster, in the original they just stood immobile in the middle of hallways and only activated if you got close, creepy at first but no different from encountering any other enemy after the 2nd or 3rd time. In the remake they utilized this same mechanic by making them blend in with the environment, I've watched tons of people play the original and the remake and everybody gets scared by how unexpected mannequins are in the remake, compared to the original were mannequins are treated as just another monster that easily defeated. The fact that they still can catch people off-guard all the way to the end of the game shows how much of an upgrade they got in the remake. - All boss fights are greatly improved in the remake, specially the "Abstract Daddy" one. In the original the boss fights were pretty short and simple, but in the remake the fights get progressively more intense and the Abstract Daddy fight has been reworked to simulate how Angela felt in her house, running through the hallways and rooms of the house while this towering figure chases you, the monster toys with you, if it wants it can be faster than you, the house gets more destroyed as the monster walks through, and if you follow Angela into her hiding spot the monster can't follow you, you feel safe for a moment but you know that you have no choice but to step outside and face the monster anyway, you're just like Angela, a child sharing a home with a monster, you can't escape since your home is all you have. I could keep babbling on and on about more things, but I know that I'm already coming off as a pretentious know-it-all, but seriously this remake was amazing, a true love letter to the original game. Hopefully we get more remakes to the other older games of the franchise and hopefully they are just as good as this.
@@MayhemEverFree I agree that the remake is absolutely fantastic, but I think they REALLY missed the mark with the ending. Specifically the letter. The new actress for Mary/Maria is great, but she didn't come anywhere close to capturing the feeling that the original had. I don't think it's necessarily her fault though, I imagine it probably has to do with the direction they gave her for how to read it. The original never fails to make me tear up, whereas this one... didn't really make me feal anything. It's incredibly disappointing after all of this amazing buildup
@@jimbeam8338 I can see where you feel OG letter was better, but i think the new letter is more realistic. In OG letter it's far more frantic, but its' done with so much energy that mary just would not have had at that point. the new interpretation is read by a person who sounds like they're tired and broken and don't have the energy to even put that much emotion into it. as someone who's been around such disease. that is actually far more real and heart breaking. the new version of mary didn't have energy for histerical tears because she was already out of tears. out of energy. I think it just doesn't land as hard to those who don't truly understand what that kind of broken sounds like.
Just a theory.. But I think the tape isn't truly what happened. James receives a letter, where Mary says that she will be gone by the time he reads it. But in his head, he killed her by hating her and not visiting her.
Honestly it kind of hurts how much better Mary was in the original. Like her VA hit that shit out of the park.

No, what he did was perfectly justified.

Excellent breakdown. Top marks 👏
very well said, couldn’t have said it better myself! 🫡
Probably he killed Mary the very day before his arrive to Silent Hill
One of the best plot twists in history, not just in video games, in my opinion.
You actually got the “best” ending here. This game deals with psychological horror, things that people actually deal with (which, imo, makes it scarier). This is the best ending.
It's not a happy ending. It's the happiest possible ending.
I love all your playthroughs your interactions streaming your focus on the game you are funny got the full package awesome streamer
As someone who played the original SH2 the day it came out I really appreciate this play through. Being able to share someone’s first experience with this game in such a fun and genuine way was amazing. The respect to the material and disrespect to all the windows made this one of the best play throughs I’ve watched. Thank you.
You're the first female streamer that
1. Listened to Mary talk to James in the long hallway and didn't just run through and ignore it (triggering the bad ending)
In terms of execution though, especially in the remake I think leave is the weakest of the 3 main endings
@@bombird8813 To be fair the "Good ending" has always been the weakest in every game of the franchise since it's usually very simplistic like "the nightmare is over, you have grown after this experience and now you can return to a normal life", the "Bad Endings" are always more deep and intense to witness and analyse.
@@MayhemEverFree that’s why the “stillness” ending is my new favorite since James lives but it is also portrayed in an emotionally deep way
I hate to tell you...
Guy Cihi (James Sunderland's original voice actor) used to prefer the 'Leave' ending as well, but in his own words: "I saw Team Silent put their hearts into In the Water ending."
I know it's a sad ending, but I think it's very beautiful, even poetic. Btw, the official japanese novel of the game also chose that ending so, connect the dots...
¿Did James Sunderland really killed Eddie Dombrowski? ¿Is he now a fugitive for the murder of 2 people? 😱
¿Was Laura wandering all alone in an abandoned town all this time?
The town doesn’t care if they get redemption or not and people fail to understand that
It isn’t doing anything itself to better people its simply manifesting their psyche
this was the best playthrough of this game i have watched, thank you so much
thank you!!!
"If that's true the why do you look so sad"
His saddest when telling her that show's that's not how he really felt, he didn't hate her, he loved her more than anyone could love another person.
WTF?!
You just gave me the creeps dude 😨
An interesting fact. in the OG, they made every corpse use same model as james because of PS2 limitations. but it also just worked and fan theories came out of it. blooper just stuck with that tradition cause over the years the fan theories spun up idea it was part of james torment. I don't think that was ever cannonized but none the less it "just works"
Oh shit
Nah, you know what. It's not like that.
Angela never showed hatred or resentment towards her mother. On the contrary, she always referred to her with an enormous hope of seeing her again. I feel like she just wanted to hug her and cry in her arms, be comforted.
Do you know what they say about Purgatory and why souls get trapped there?
"Mama, I was looking for you!
Now you're the only one left.
Maybe then...
Maybe then I can rest."
She needed to say goodbye to her and maybe forgive each other.
@@bastia1797 Angela 100% was searching her mother to kill her, it is a confirmed plot point by the devs themselves.
This is game of the year 100%. Very perfect work from Bloober Team! And Angela, so sad. 😢
Everything crafted with this story is so fascinating to break down
I lost my fiance about 9 years ago to cancer, so the ending to this game really hits home.
The game begins in the bathroom because there he has the breakdown that makes him deny that he killed her, that's why he trembles,
People believe that James was unfaithful but that is not true since everything sexual about SH is his sexual frustration That's why there are nurses because James saw them when he visited Mary and I guess he has a leg fetish for obvious reasons. Does that make him a pig? Not for me since he is a man and he is repressed,
in short fucking masterpiece
The storytelling is immaculate, I love this game so much.
wow i really loved your whole reaction to the game, you pay attention to every detail and you somehow feel so warm to your viewers >.< i’m subscribing
Julia just keeps playing masterpiece after masterpiece lol
They should add the pillow as secret unlockable weapon in the game
This is SO funny. I wish. Like after playing it once before you can find a pillow in the car or something.
W playthrough, best overall by far thanks for the content it got me through schoolwork
I thought they met in college
That's why this called psychological horror game.
Its so funny how people in Chat think they understand the game 😂 most of then never play the Original only watch the Remake Gameplay
They really could not help themselves either. They were so good the whole way through. She sees the VHS and suddenly its a deluge of their theories, trying to influence her experience and thoughts with their own interpretations, and with it some sprinkling of back seating.
Sad to see the Glass Breaking Simulator come to an end.
1:17:29 "Oh Pollock, what have you done?" is definitely underrated LOL
The look on your face when you watched the videotape is how I imagined my face looked the entire time I was watching Megalopolis.
FYI: Team Bloober declared that they are interested in developing more Silent Hill remakes, as well as a new one.
But they also said 1&3 cult themes don't suit them.
@@furynvm1 & 3 is all anyone will want from them as far as remakes go.
@@marwynthemasterful6369 That's just not true. There are a lot of fans of 4.
That is very nice to hear. They've shown that they CAN make a Silent Hill game, even if it's a remake. I'm sold on whatever they're working on next.
This is my first silent hill game. I love this game so much. Angela is impressive.
I have to catch up by watching the last video but boy am I looking forward to seeing this one! ❤
Congrats! You got the "good" ending. If you're curious though, some say the "Japanese" ending is more lore accurate. But, I'm partial to the ending you got. Glad you enjoyed your time in Jimothy's Silent Hill. GG!
Thank you so much for playing this, Julia!
Loop theory is canon now
Loop theory is canon now with the new endings and the memento photos
This game is incredible.❤
Great non pretentious analysis and play through
I recommend looking up the meaning behind all the monsters. Almost every visual and everything you see In this game represents something. Like abstract daddy When he was chasing you and wrecking the walls representing how he Was wrecking their home Figuratively. A lot of the notes and such we're directed to james.
Your playthrough is amazing. Just subscribed
Julia has to make me cry again 😢
2:24:28 The monsters were created by Silent Hill itself to torment James with his guilt for killing Mary but now that he's facing up to it they've served their purpose.
1 ending down 7 more to go the leave ending is the normal good ending I wish I got the in water ending first well done Julia 👏
This is even better play through than your FF7. Thanks Julia enjoy your weekend!
I know it’s probably not on purpose but your voice is very seductive. Feel like I’m listening to Maria play SH2 hahaha
Just finished the game, I’m sad and happy 😮
the elevator thing where you drop all your items is much more creepy in ther OG in this remake it didnt feel like that, in the OG it makes you think theres an invisible person in the elevator or something. since there was an invisible enemy in the prison, you were used to think there were invisible things in the OG
What's next, Julia? Silent Hill 2 OG?
Well atleast he didnt cheat on her 🙃
@@RedWanderer1 LOL
I didn't get this ending! I really like it. Mine was dour.
As promised i ll drop any info here: Maria was the idolized version of Mary, what james wanted from Mary when she was sick, so hotter, avaible and wanted to be protected
Maria is the only character that is not real
Each character sees silent hills differently. Laura she went there for Mary but she has no sin so she is fine and sees no monsters. Angela sees fire and Eddie ice
All the others sees monsters but in their own way
Each monster represents something for James.
The novelization also mentions they originated from a desire to "escape"
The “cage monster” in the hospital (when Laura locks you in) it represents Mary badmouthing James in her last days (thats why its in a bed like and has a mouth).
And so on.
The best ending
This was so fun to watch you play Julia, great job on getting the good ending first playthough
¿"Good" ending? 🤨
It's called "Leave" ending.
The endings in Silent Hill 2 are not called like in Silent Hill 1 (Good plus/Good/Bad plus/Bad).

Doesn't this remake have the "Born from a Wish" sub-scenario? In the original you can play it by completing the game. I love your gameplays 🖤

Overdose Delusion track is the best ❤
She'll play the OG eventually
This is the best, fluffiest ending. He moved on and adopted Laura. I'd wish Maria could join them, since she was also innocent in this. Real person with real feelings created by Silent Hill powers just to torment James. SH2: Born from a Wish ending is super sad.
Innocent? In the original I can see that but in the remake they make her out to be a manipulative homewrecker.
Dragon's dogma 2 please 🙏
I really enjoy the new wave of Silent Hill 2 Fans and witnessing the shock of the ending.
And mostly women playing the game. and the fact about James / Mary / Maria / Angela.
And their reactions to those key moments.
I really Hope Konami see the overwhelming good reviews and new fans for the franchise to give us Silent Hill 1 and 3 Remake.
And maybe allowing Harry Mason as a better male protagonist with his search of his daughter. to flip to the James of it all. lol

2:19:28 "You are not my mama. You are a Snort!"
The Remake is so good. But the OG is far superior experience.
The Gen Z "gamers" always think the new games always better just because yes 😂
Edit: I am also Gen Z but i can see how people of my age are so imateur
In terms of story and monster design is just like the original, nothing was really added or removed to make the design go in a different direction, but even then the remake made better use of some monsters and improved upon them:
- The "Lying Figures" (first monster that spits acid) were kept mostly the same but they have a better range of attack compared to the original making them feel more dangerous in close quarters, the remake also made better use of their "crawling", in the original it was only relevant to scare the player by making one show up from underneath some cars and to let them escape before you could stomp them, but in the remake they use it for mobility, they charge at James and try to disorient him by moving swiftly across the floor.
@@mysticalos The original is read with the emotion she was likely feeling as she wrote it. That was the whole point
Could you at least spell “immature” correctly? Edit it maybe so this comment isn’t anymore bothersome than it already has to be
Just a theory.. But I think the tape isn't truly what happened.
James receives a letter, where Mary says that she will be gone by the time he reads it. But in his head, he killed her by hating her and not visiting her.
