without taking anything away from the great ms o'day - but can anyone tell me the name of the fella making a gorgeous noise out that ampeg bass? something kelly?
Lucky enough to see her at the "Blue Note" with Buddy Rich Ghost Big Band in late 87', shortly after his death. They did all the stuff from her time with The Gene Krupa Orchestra, and more. It was better than this, don't think it was recorded, unfortunately.
The one thing that makes me sad about this video is that it's a beautiful example of Anita's singing before she had her teeth removed and got choppers. Her intonation went straight to hell -- singers need the vibrations in their skulls, and teeth are a huge part of that. How great to hear her do "Wave" when she was still at the top of her game.
John’s old friend, Don Manning, of KBOO, emceed at the Mt. Hood Community College Festival in Portland, Oregon on August 8, 1982. It was a hot humid day. Don introduced Anita and the group ending with, “John Poole is my friend and mentor, one of the great drum experts of all time!” The audience tittered when Anita snuck up behind pianist Eddie Weed and pretended to wind him up. The rest of the quartet was composed of bassist Red Kelly and tenor sax Bill Ramsey. Anita sang You’d Be So Nice to Come Home To, Green Dolphin Street, In a Mellow tone, S’Wonderful/They Can’t Take That Away From Me, P Town, Honeysuckle Rose and Four Brothers. They were followed by Jon Hendricks’ group.
What a natural genius. She was the best.
Tremendous stuff. Swings like hell.
Yes it does! She was wonderful!

Dude the band can't keep up
Staged spontaneity. Shes great as always but i hate the schtick
This song so much better with upright bass. That bass is too overpowering can't hear Ms O'Day.
That's all there is folks!
