    If you drill the hole right on the edge, it would be easier to get the air out. Most people today throw out the American or German unit that has lasted 40 years and was very expensive and buy a $2 china unit that disintegrates in a year or two. Modern polymers revert to their component chemicals quickly.

    so many years ago, I bought the same type compass. went camping with my brothers and my compass developed a bubble. I was pissed. So when I got back home I was going to return it to the place I bought it. Well....I took the compass from my bag and viola', no bubble. Took me a while to figure it out. I lived in Phoenix AZ at the time, elevation 1200ft, but I went camping at Big Lake, el 9,000ft. so the bubble was no air bubble at all, but a vacuum in the compass.

    Hi I believe the liquid😀 is mineral oil, a small bubble needs to be there for expansion.
