I know many Alien "purists" detest Scott's choice to replace Goldsmith's original end title music for this, but I think it's actually rather perfect. No disrespect to Goldsmith, who is an incredibly talented composer, but this sequence from Hanson is poignantly cathartic. It has a tired, fatigue-laden triumph motif, which perfectly encapsulates what Ripley must have felt after finally outwitting the absolute terror manifested by the xeno. I suspect it evokes a similar feeling as a soldier who has endured a hard-won, bloody, and mind-shattering battle and now simply wants to drift away in the seductive arms of relaxation and sleep. As such, I think it is entirely justified and fitting for this to play over the end credits to one of the most terrifying movies to ever be produced.

Fred Leggett Man, oh man, I have to agree with you. As a Goldsmith fanatic, I still have to say, I concur. The way you described this piece of music, as it ties into the film’s story, was perfect! That sense of weariness you described is exactly how I feel at the movie’s end. Complete exhaustion & recovery. To me, the film’s closing scene was “it” for me, a satisfying end, where I never embraced the sequels (some I never bothered to see). Ripley & Jonesy, slumbering in their pod, after a death-defying escape. Sleep... Sleep... Sleep.....

    • @fredleggett923

It's unfortunate, but understandable, that Scott has a bad reputation among some Goldsmith fans. What happened with Legend was undoubtedly a composer's worst nightmare and it's not surprising there was bad blood between the two afterwards. And I say that as both a fan of the Tangerine Dream score and Goldsmith.
Still, sometimes, just sometimes, a director is right with his or her choice to go with something else, despite the pedigree of those directly involved. And it is extremely risky, but for Alien, I definitely think it paid off.
IMO, it's highly regrettable that the Hanson piece seemingly can't be included with "complete" Alien scores (at least, on official releases). Just doesn't seem right.

In the early '80's, I ran into Tom Skerritt, Veronica Cartwright and Ron Shusett (producer) in Hollywood at a Q&A/meet & greet, at Ron's brother Don's H'wood workshop. (Also saw Chekov! aka Walter Koenig in the foyer. Thot he was H.R. Giger, ran back to my car to have him sign my copy of Necronomicon, then realized my mistake. Guess I had Alien on the brain.) I really appreciate James Cameron's Aliens, a faithful sequel to the orig, and I like that he includes some of the same actors in his flix (Terminator et al.): Paxton, Jenette Goldstein, Lance Hendricks.

@@LUCKO2022 It was a lot for a sci fi movie. And according to Boxofficemojo the budget for Alien was $11 million. For Star Wars it was $11-13 million. The most expensive movies in 1979 were $25-30 million. And those went over-budget due to delays and problems with the filming (like Apocalypse Now). So anything around $10 million was considered big budget.

I still clearly remember that day at the theater when I first saw this movie. I too was emotionally drained and I remember thinking "what did I just see", what did the alien look like? And this music was so soothing and beautiful, but then it had that "caution" sound at 2:31 and then ended serenely

@@ericar1001 My God, I thought I was the only one that was deeply affected by the "caution sound" followed by the serene ending. It was like being told everything was going to be ok. That's when I completely lost it!

I was homeless not to long ago worked my way out of it became a manager a fast food chain got a car brand new phone and an apt. My brother comes over that October to celebrate Halloween and played this for me the morning after it sounded so beautiful and we had a great weekend. He left for college the following Monday I then played this coming home from work that day and began to cry uncontrollably for what seemed like hours. I feel at that moment everything I had gone through ups and downs had hit me all at once it was depressing it was it was euphoric it was beautiful

I watched this movie just the other day for the 10th time at a friend's house Arthur Hubbard. He bought an old high school and turned the gym into a Theater. It's full of Alien theme stuff. He has the Hour long version of this song playing on concert speakers. He's got to have over 5 million dollars off Alien collections of movie props. That's what brought me to this song. The guy has a full scale Queen laying the eggs with Sigourney in her white suit. It's like nothing I've ever seen on UA-cam Nothing compares.

  • @MrChrispy777

Interesting side note to this music, which deviated from the excellent score, was that Goldsmith couldn't connect on an emotional level, with the characters. They were cold and resentful to one another, having to work and live together 24/7. It was either eerie and mysterious music, or tension-building and frightful. This left him empty for a love theme, and the tension in his music was perpetuated, through to the end credits. Director Ridley Scott decided, behind Jerry G's back, to give the audience a much-needed break, using a snippet of Howard Hanson's "Romantique #2." Great choice, but, oh, was Goldsmith ticked!

Watching this film for the first time yesterday this song grabbed me from the first two measures. It’s a somber bittersweet moment for Ridley, knowing she has survived the battle but lost the war and her friends. Sounds similar to Ralph Vaughan Williams “Fantasia on a Theme”.

I think the audience deserves this romantic piece after experiencing that horror. Personally I believe Ridley Scott choosing this music firmly set the stamp of this film as a masterpiece. Sadly he seems to have lost his way lately and agreed to film scripts which never should have been green lit.

Movies are reflective of their times this came out in the Jimmy Carter presidency when the USA felt it was losing economically and around the world with the withdrawal from Vietnam just 4 years ago.
This film is about loss of control by the little man to forces beyond their control.
The Alien was the Vietcong and Weyland corp was the corrupt military industrial complex.
The music reflected the brief respite a human feels after they have survived something they really shouldn’t have much like the late 70s.its got President Carter written all over it.
Compare this with 6 years latter and Huey Lewis and the News and Back to The Future “pure 80s “Regan era at full blast and self improvement with the Power of Love followed by Top Gun a year latter.
