So I followed your advice, stuck not just one, but FOUR paper towels in and its draining all the accumulated water out like a dream. Its like there's a tiny pond inside the a/c unit, thats how bad it was. If I can post pics here, I would. Thank you soo much!

I was looking around and can’t find an answer. With a window unit like yours, is it normal for the evaporator coils in the front, right behind the filter, to leak water, even if it’s not coming into the house?
Yes. The evaporator coils end up collecting a lot of condensation from a mix of the hot air, moisture, and cool air from the AC. The condensation collects until it reaches a point where it drips down into the tray at the bottom of the AC unit. Based on the angle of installation or how dirty the ac unit is the water will either roll into the house or out the back of the unit. Hope this helps.

@@ashleynicole7342 that warms my heart! Awesome news! You should just be able to leave the paper towel in for the season now. Should just slowly 💧 drip! Woot woot!
Thanks for the tip. Definitely going to try this. Woke up this morning and my floor was completely wet. Will you this work for ACs that are installed in the wall and not the window?
Thanks for watching! Should work as long as: 1. There is a drip pan 2. Water is coming from the drip pan 3. You have access to put the towel in the back.
this is like drilling a hole on the bottom i suppose. But how do you know its an issue of water outside being too high vs the drain channels being clogged?
@YeahBuddy I actually had to use my leaf blower and cut 2 small openings on each side of the ac unit to vacuum all the small leaves that were clogging the small tube that goes towards the front the unit that drains the water. This fixed it permanently!!!
Our window unit has been leaking but we do have a drip in the back by the small hole on the bottom. I'll be using the paper towel trick in the three sections I'm finding water just to be super safe! Did you think it was the condensate line that may have been the issue? Thanks for posting!
The root cause of my clog was poor installation (tilted sideways) and clogged drip pan. My model did not have a line / hose for water to drip out so the towel worked like a charm! Thanks for watching!
What about those AC units which are designed to retain a certain level of water in the pan around the condenser fan. My LG units do not have a drain, but instead have a slinger as part of the fan. The slinger splashes the condenser coils and helps to cool them down and makes the unit more efficient. Would draining this water cause the unit to fail and/or not work as intended?
Thanks for watching and your comment! Does the slinger grab water from the pan? Or does the water come from the elsewhere? If your machine is dripping and leaking inside your apartment, I’d still recommend the paper towel to dry it out a little until the dripping stops.
@@YeahBuddy The slinger uses H2O that originated as condensate from the evap. coils. My unit had a restriction within the channel between the evap section and the outside condenser section. Water was not flowing to the condenser area and gradually started overflowing on the window sill. Sticking a straight piece of wire coat hanger in the channel after poking around for a couple of minutes unblocked it and the water drained towards the rear of the unit. So, once the water accumulates between the condenser and the fan (about 3/4 " deep), the slinger (turned by the fan motor and on the same shaft) splashes the water up constantly and the fan directs the water to the condenser coils, cooling the coils and evaporating the water. Here in Louisiana, this AC only drips water from July to September, because of the 100% humidity on many days. There is a rubber stopper that can be removed from the rear part of the "tray" on the back vertical surface. Even with this plug removed, the opening is about an inch above the bottom of the tray, so it's obvious that the machine is engineered to collect a certain amount of condensate for optimum cooling. This unit is about 5 years old and the bottom of the tray was not treated or galvanized adequately enough. So I used evaporust to chemically convert the rust and used automotive primer to keep the rust from taking over. Thanks for answering so quickly, and I've subbed on your channel.
@@plumkey197 that is a lot fancier than my old system! That being said, water did condense on the coils when there was high humidity out. All a hustle to get these to work but sounds like you got it buddy! Thanks for subbing and watching!
@@YeahBuddy I just noticed water on the window sill of the 10K BTU unit. Just noticed it a few minutes ago. It's not much, and the water level inside the unit around the evap coils is draining well. I have my suspicions, so I shut the unit off, dried the water on the window sill, and added water around the evap coils to bring the level up a little. Need to rule out the pan being perforated and causing water to seep through an area of rust. Story continues tomorrow.....
@@YeahBuddy Here's a novel situation that I'm nearly certain is causing my water leak on the window sill under the front of both LG units. We usually keep them at 72' F when running, usually 16 out of 24 hours. I watched the 10K unit closely during the last two days, and noticed that the leaking doesn't start until the room is cool, and well below the dewpoint in this region (usually 75-77 degrees. The bottom of the AC unit below the coils gets ice-cold after about 3-4 hours and begins to condensate due to the high humidity! I've cut a foam insulation panel into strips to take up the space under the front of the unit. I'm going to see if the panels being in contact with the bottom of the unit will prevent the condensation, since the metal surface is now covered. The AC should have been designed for this eventuality for climates like ours in Louisiana, possibly with a layer of insulation built into the bottom of the unit.
Months! As long as it sits in the drip tray, it shouldn’t pose a fire hazard. I’d recommend checking on it periodically to see if it looks extremely discolored or saturated with dirt/grime. If it is, you can always change it out for a new rectangle or square sheet of bounty. Thanks for watching and please subscribe! Let me know how it works for you!
Hi there! Yes, I’d recommend changing the towel out every 1-2 months….but I think that I generally leave it in all summer :) Thanks again for watching! Please subscribe and tell your friends.
I use a dehumidifier already. The ac barely leaks outside so I used a wire to pull out some dry leaves. At the bottom it was more wet. Is there a drain from inside to outside? It also has the degree of not being level so water runs uphill? Physics does it's own thing around here.
Hi Ed! Thanks for commenting. Cleaning out leaves and debris is a smart idea. Some AC units have a hole that they drain through and some don’t. My first thought was to drill a hole in the bottom of mine. But I’m six stories up and didn’t want to take the AC out of the window. In the end, the paper towel was the most effective and efficient option to stop the water from leaking into my apartment. Were you able to fix your problem?
@@GoHomeKamala when that happened to me, I grabbed a bunch of paper towels to soak that up (immediate action), then the towel in the back drip tray worked effectively. If there is a ton of water behind the filter, you may need a one time soak up. Good luck my friend.
It can be on when you do it….but in an abundance of caution, turning it off isn’t a bad idea when you place the towel in. After that, turn it on and let it drip!
Hey hun! My AC goes thru the wall and is dripping inside. The damage caused my wood floors to lift👎🏽My ac is uncovered and cant fit my arm back there. Any suggestions?? Would super appreciate it💕
Oh no!!! I’m so sorry to hear that Hollee! My AC ruined my window and part of my floor as well. What do you mean your AC is uncovered? Do you have one of those arm grab extenders? You may be able to squeeze that out the window with a paper towel. You can also do some immediate action by opening up the front and soaking the water out of the tray. That is not a long term fix but will stop some of the immediate problems.
🙋🏾♂️Thanks for the video!🤸🏾♂️ I'll be trying this along with applying the bracket just to make sure... It's March and it'll be warm soon and I'm absolutely ready for the heat now 😎. Thanks again! Take care
Trying this out, I’m really hoping it works! Not sure how long I have to leave it going but it’s 96 degrees rn and my floors are getting so much water on them . I really hope this works because I don’t have the money for a new one 😂😭
My girlfriend has an in-wall unit at her place. It's old as hell and has been leaking inside, can't get it to stop. On the back of the fins it looks like they're covered with a fabric type material almost. At first I right it was just crap from cottonwood trees and whatnot but I don't know if I should pull it off to try and get better drainage. Have you ever seen anything like this?
Whoa, no I haven’t seen an AC like that with fabric. Is there a way you can pull off a small test area? You don’t need much space to get a paper towel in there and get that drain rolling.
THX MINE JUST STARTED LEAKIN TODAY I WAS READY TO TOSS IT OUT FOREAL BUT IMA GIVE THIS A SHOT ITS ABOUT TO GET COLD HERE ANYWAY IF I CAN MAKE IT FORA NOTHER MONTH ITS WORTH A TRY THX YOU
I did this and it worked on one side! I was amazed! But then it started leaking from the other side. The thing is when they installed my AC in my window they put brackets so it won’t move. I’m on the second story and I can’t get to the other side or take out the AC to put a paper towel on the other side 😭 Thank you for this video tho! It does work!
Oh no! I have not heard of that one. But I guess that is possible if it is titled the wrong way or if you have a crooked window frame. Anyway to reach through one of the ac arm flaps to get back there?
Okay that's a good temporary solution but how do we fix the problem I saw that when I stuck a stick in the little holes that it would let a little water out but like something is in there preventing the water from dripping out so what can I do to prevent this from happening
The way to “fix” that is by cleaning out your AC. Most will have to remove the unit from the window and spray it out with water to thoroughly clean the drip pan. You could also drill a larger hole in the bottom. Thanks for watching!
I just applied this wonderful method this morning. How long should it stop the leaking from inside, as over an hour later, I’m still seeing leaking from the front of the AC? Thank you so much by the way.
I would suggest putting another towel in and making sure it’s dripping. If it is not dripping, it isn’t working. Should soak all the water up shortly thereafter. Thanks for watching!!!
@@Angeliablue51 the drop is sufficient and all it will do. So, soak up as much as possible, then put the towel in and let it drip slowly. That will do!
@@YeahBuddy i took it apart and there was leaves and stuff preventing the water from going to the front where the coils were to the back. Cleaned it out and it works fine now
Yeah thank you for that video because I have a 12,000 BTU General electric AC in the window which is dripping a lot of water into my home now I am going to try what you just did well I’ll get my husband to do it or I’ll do it whatever 😂 thank you very much for this video it was Educational.

Most modern window air conditioners do not have drain holes or plugs for water removal. Instead, the condensation is distributed by the fan sling and thrown up against the condenser to aid in cooling the unit more efficiently.
My AC is only a few weeks old and it started doing this and my room is showing 65-80% humidity…. But I have no way to access my AC without removing the entire unit from the window and I paid to have it installed. Scared I’ll break everything if I remove all the screws and take it out of the window.
Oh Lordy! Can you reach the back of the AC to put in a paper towel? If so, you should do this. You may be able to remove screws from one side and squeeze an arm out the crack in the window to reach the back.
@@cookieaddictions excellent! Angling it back is definitely a more permanent fix. The paper towel is immediate action, angling is remedial. Hope this gets fixed for you!
Yeah Buddy Dad yeah, I don’t know, even with the new angle and I can see it dripping outside from the drainage hole, it’s still coming inside through the front and my super said other units are having the same thing? So maybe it’s just the weather? It’s just really weird cuz I’ve never seen this before and I’ve had window units my whole life
@@cookieaddictions it’s definitely going to drip due to the condensation building up inside. That is 100% normal. If it’s still dripping inside, despite the new angle, get the bounty towel rolling in the back. It will pull out the water in the drip tray so it doesn’t overfill. My drainage hole was plugged and it was angled bad and the towel fixed the problem for me.
A hankie may work. But paper is light weight, flexible, and disposable. It pulls the water in and then gravity takes it out! Also, I don’t think that I’d want to reuse anything that sat in my window AC since pigeons also sit on it and likely use it as a WC. 🚾

Thanks for the tip. Definitely going to try this. Woke up this morning and my floor was completely wet. Will you this work for ACs that are installed in the wall and not the window?
Thanks for watching! Should work as long as:
1. There is a drip pan
2. Water is coming from the drip pan
3. You have access to put the towel in the back.
this is like drilling a hole on the bottom i suppose. But how do you know its an issue of water outside being too high vs the drain channels being clogged?
Good question! I knew my system was old and likely clogged. Was unable to easily clear it, so the paper towel worked like a charm!

You got it! Thanks for watching and your kind comment! Stay cool and dry.
Awesome tip and it helped me out big time. How long will the paper towel last?
A long time! Maybe a few months. Likely longer depending on the elements. Thanks for watching.
Totally awesome brother thank you!
Quick question if your still around...do i change the papertowel at some point? Daily? Weekly?
Yo! Of course, maybe monthly. If you want to do weekly, you can, but it should last a long time.
Just tried this. I felt like MacGyver!! Hoping it solves the problem. Thanks!

@@YeahBuddy totally works! Will be great with the hot weather coming this week.
Two thumbs up for this! It really worked. Thank you~
Ha! Thanks! It was a miracle for us! Thanks for watching!
Do you leave the paper towel for days, weeks? Should I worry about fire hazard? Thanks for the help!
Would you suggest changing the wet paper towel for a dry one ? Or do we just leave the one we put in?
Hi there! Yes, I’d recommend changing the towel out every 1-2 months….but I think that I generally leave it in all summer :)
Thanks again for watching!
@@YeahBuddy No I didn't. It's condenseing and dripping behind the air filter? It don't remember seeing it do that. Thank you for your help too
@@GoHomeKamala when that happened to me, I grabbed a bunch of paper towels to soak that up (immediate action), then the towel in the back drip tray worked effectively. If there is a ton of water behind the filter, you may need a one time soak up. Good luck my friend.
Can you do this method while using the ac? Or does the ac have to be turned off?

Ours is leaking outside but on the neighbors balcony downstairs what should I do?
Hmmmm……I think they are supposed to drip outside. If there is a balcony immediately below your AC, that is a building design flaw.
Most modern window air conditioners do not have drain holes or plugs for water removal. Instead, the condensation is distributed by the fan sling and thrown up against the condenser to aid in cooling the unit more efficiently.
@@hojo70 yes indeed! Thanks for your note and for watching!

@@rickeygobin1861 thank you and appreciate you watching!
The longer the towel the more by volume comes out. I used an orange super absorbing towel from Amizon.
Boom! That is awesome!
Yeah Buddy Dad I got my super to come by and I tried the paper towel thing but I’m also having him adjust the angle so it drips out the back better.
Great idea! But a piece of thin cotton, like s hankie, wouldn't it last longer than the paper? I will try as soon as it stops raining. Thanks
A hankie may work. But paper is light weight, flexible, and disposable. It pulls the water in and then gravity takes it out! Also, I don’t think that I’d want to reuse anything that sat in my window AC since pigeons also sit on it and likely use it as a WC. 🚾
Let me know how your rest of a different material works!
