    The only thing I have against battery + inverter power over generator power is we're at it's inception. I have long used car batteries and an inverter to power my hunting camp. My first inverter had a device inside it that buzzed making ac out of 6vdc It looked like an electron tube with prongs coming out the bottom where it plugged into a socket but it was not glass, it was metal. Inside it had contact points that were welded onto the ends of "reeds" that were attached to a paddle. There was an electro magnet on each side that pulled the paddle from one side to the other to make and break the DC current going thru the contact points at 60 Hz. All that was stuffed inside a metal can that plugged into a base socket. That 6volts 60 Hz ac went into transformers to give output of 110 volt ac. Although I never wore one out, the guy who gave me the inverter gave me a couple extra vibrators because they were a high maintenance item. I have since purchased solid state controlled square wave and pure sinewave invertors. Although they do work, they are expensive and really, they are not robust and the battery fails too often too. I've purchased car batteries of 1,148 Amp Hours as well as Deep Cycle Marine Batteries. They work for a while then quit. Battery power is just NOT up to snuff. I have a tiny 2 cycle generator from Harbor Freight that I bought for $69 back in 1990 something. It runs my entire deer camp, lights, paddle fan, TV, VHS player, heating blanket etc, all day long on 3/4 gallon of gas and 2 ounces of oil. Until inverters and batteries come up in reliability and life span, I'm not going to use them much. I refuse to live through the infancy of this new electronic plus solar power sourced new fangled cash trap stuff until it's proven more. I just don't have the money to keep investing in it over and over and over until someone finally gets something that works good enough for me. ben/ michigan

    These may be very good in some cases but investigate your specific situation carefully. I have an unusual situation with an ALL electric house - and that includes heating. Last I checked a combination of 3 power wall units would cost me over $30,000 and would run my house for 1/2 day in the middle of winter. That’s not at all cost effective in my case. If you have gas heat, a gas stove, gas dryer, can get by without a/c, and don’t have a large frig and freezer then these may last a few days. I opted for a 12kw generator.

      You might consider 1 powerwall and a cybertruck. The truck has the storage capacity of almost 10 powerwalls and you can get it refilled at a supercharger and keep your home going indefinitely.

      @@johnlynch301 Thanks for the thought but - yeah, no. Not at $82,000 for a cybertruck plus $30,000 for a powerwall. My generator could keep my house running continuously for at least 5 years at that price. I really don’t care about being off grid - especially at that price. I just want to keep the house running in a power outage.

    • @scruffy4647
      @scruffy4647 29 днів тому

      @@johnlynch301 That's a good idea. Both Ford & GM offer the same capabililties. Now one thing to consider is the more people with these V2H platforms, the charging wait at the supercharger stations may be a long wait during an outage and how extensive is the electrical outage. Several years ago in Texas when they had that monster ice storm, they also lost natural gas service. It was a mess. I hope those battery backup solutions get affordable because that would be a good supplement. They're just way to expensive.

    • @jonothandoeser
      @jonothandoeser 28 днів тому

      I think the Powewall solution is about half of the equation for those who are very serious about being able to run a house on batteries for any length of time. You also need low powered/super efficient appliances (DC if possible). Also a solar power source. If you are still using appliances made for use on the grid, they will gobble up you battery storage in no time .

    I just want something to run my refrigerator and freezer if there is a power outage without paying a fortune. I move my family to a local hotel or motel to ride out the outage but I don't want to lose my refrigerator and freezer contents.
    Is this overkill? Is there somethings else?

    yes, let's put a large lithium batteries in our house... Not like foreign actors are using theses to cause a runaway cascade event that turns it into a bomb. Yet all you have to do is put in a redundancy to shut off device if errors are detected. But that would hurt overhead and war efforts...
