Hey girl! Don't get discouraged! I just started my second quarter of nursing school and let me tell you, I'm bad with math too. I barely skidded by in high school and then had to retake algebra classes upon entering college. You will get the hang of things. I wanted to tell you though, what you do in school and as a nurse is more conversions and dosage calcs..they always follow the same formula and you will get tons of practice. Keep up the hard work!
I took Algebra and Clinical Math together my very first semester along with Sociology and English Comp. I did ok in Algebra, but kicked butt in Clinical Math. I think it was because I felt like it was my first "nursing" course. I even asked my Algebra teacher why, and he said it was because it's applied to what I'm interested in...makes sense. Don't worry. You will be amazing. I read my chapters the night before each class, so I wasn't lost the next day. I swear by this! Good luck honey!
Goodluck through your Journey I have finished all my prereqs! and I am so glad I also took Medical Terminology and Pathophysiology while I was applying.. Chemistry does suck sooo bad, however now I am in the Pharmacology and Nursing Management skills and start clinicals in August ..
Ahh, thanks! That makes me feel much better! And it makes sense!! And, good advice on reading before class (that is something I definitely need to work on) There is some dosage calculations at the end of the math book we're using in my current math class..so i am looking forward to that!
You will be fine in Math just practice practice practice I am also horrible in Math it is a lot of conversions for dosage age and weight but they help you at least at my school and also we have computers that give us practice problems I am still scared because that is my biggest weakness but we can do it everyone learns ... Good luck in your Journey stick with it and never give up if thats is what you really want stay focused ....
Calculating dosages isn't very hard. I am also bad at math but I've found that with lots of practice (and I mean lots) you will see you use the same set of formulas for everything. I also bought "Nursing Calculations for Dummies" on Amazon for $12 and it explains everything clearly. Good luck! :)
@salinajj did she really delete it? i haven't searched in awhile. i loved her too! AND, HeatherHeartsNursing hasn't updated in forever which is kind of bumming me out! :)
I am just trying to get into an Associate's Degree program right now, but may continue on to getting my BSN at the university here or an online program. :)
