Damn, Sam epitomizes “What one man can do, another can do.” There is nothing beyond his learning. So impressed.
I don't understand how people live their lives thinking that's not how it is. Assuming you're able bodied, anything you can do, I can also do if taught
@@AstroToad626 Some things are extremely difficult unless you have a talent for it. Sam seems to pick up anything with relative ease. Musical instruments, tech, sailing, building, repairing electrical, hand navigation, and now he’s 3D printing wind foils. He adapts to whatever he wants to do with relative ease. I’ve tried playing guitar, and while I know I could learn with enough practice, I tried for a couple years to no avail. Sam says “I think I’ll do this or that, and just does it. He’s quite a multitalented man.
Plus he teaches himself in most cases. He repaired that boat to near perfection. Boat repair is a tough skill to learn for most.
Stuff you build yourself are always better than the things you can buy, even when they aren't.
Man alive you are one tenacious man. Honestly, you are exceptionally inspirational at everything you do and the most curious person on earth. Spectacular.
Thank you for doing everything so full on.
This is so hard-core!! Love seeing someone foiling in the snow ❄️ 🤘. Boss-level, shiznits! And I thought I pushed Crocs to their limits! 😆. Much respect.
Fully foiled, snow blustering in horizontal flurry, white caps washing with breaks folding. Sam holding, leaping, splashing, greasing a docking. One picture, 900 words reserved.
Things you do for love🥰🥰
Hey Sam, that short haircut looks AWESOME!!! What else is awesome???? This entire episode, dude, that's what!!!!!
The Norway windsurfing conditions were very difficult. Changing direction and speed. You did very well.
Oh man! My sides are hurting from laughing so much.. Absolutely brilliant film. It seems I've been watching you for so long now and it just gets better. Wonderful to see you making a living from being happy..Awesome man, keep it up and big love to you two.
Thanks for talking us for the ride Sam. Always enjoy your videos.
Eternal Life is not a place it is a Person. 😊
And to keep hands warm - use harness in winter. It lets you put one hand down which improves bloodflow to your fingers bringing much needed heat :)
Once you hit Norway I think the essence of Sven kicked in from being only 1 border away! 😂😂 His energy field must be travelling far!
One more tutorial on how to live life to the fullest. Best regards from Richard in Raleigh.
Another awesome video Sam. It's Good to see you again and I bet your glad to get your hair out of your eyes.
Really impressive Sam! Both the fabrication and the foiling. I’m amazed by the foiling in terms of the amount of forces you’re balancing at once.
Great to hear from you again, Sam. You've not been idle, that's for sure. Well done.
Well done Sam... That foil looked "epic!" when testing strength always remember pivot points - nature will always end up accidentally putting all the load on the furthest points.
Your livin the life Sam!
Way Cool
Thanks for takin us along!! 😊
You bet!
Looks like an interesting adventure. Not sure I would care to do it in that cold water. Keep it up and your home made ones will have you flying in no time.
109th tag-along view - first saw a foil board in the surf film "Step Into Liquid". You inspired me to compose a tune titled "On The Waddenzee"... from that episode.
I used to watch step into liquid religiously
@@bowdezaufa2609 Seeing that it's more like a documentary, it is worth many views; I agree. It was FREE to watch on UA-cam; not sure if it still is.
I have a lot of experience with fiberglass layup (my dad built fiberglass speedboats out of a backyard shop all threw my childhood) - I think the three bolt attachment will never be strong enough; the area of glass around the bolt heads (X3) is taking all the forces.
I think you need to make the stabilizer, the bar, and the foil, all-one-thing using a 'layered sandwich' lamination. Or fabricate a high-strength steel all-one-thing 'backbone' and surround with a matrix/epoxy to get the final shape. Neat watching you learn!
I am impressed
Not only in the build, but in riding it in that weather. Wow
Glad you're back, Sam!
You keep on keepin' on, Sam. It's fun riding along with you. Thanks
Cheers from NC ... just a bit down the coast from Wilmington. Crazy hobby that hydro-foiling!! Fun to watch. Stay safe!
A new video from Sam and an instant smile appears on my face because yours is infectious. I heard in the last one that you lost material from 2 months - that really sucks, man. Anyway, I'm glad to see you back, doing Sam's stuff! Fair winds!
Where's my AHAB rage at the sea SAM?!? Nice haircut dude! LOL
I don’t know anyone who is happier and more psyched on life and challenges, than Sam!
Norwegian Icewater Crocs
You should definitely have a sponsorship from them!
Lol, classic chill Sam..... "Yeah, they turned off the power to my shop, but im sure its fine, ill get it sorted out"
I fully understand the concept of wind foiling, it still looks like magic though, amazing 👌🏻
Wing
That is a new perspective on wintersport. Love it!
Aced it well done Sam🤗. Perseverance will win in the end.
Great stuff, Sam. I love your constant inventive mind. You must fit right in there in Norway.
Haha!😂
You are crazy like me in my younger days!
When I bought my first windsurfer in the 70s I was so hot to try it.
I started the season in March, when the water was at 3°C in Germany. And I had no dry suit! 🥶😂
Jeez! you're my hero, Sam! Keep on keepin on!
Fantastic job! I love your enthusiasm, nothing better than having your own build!
Couldn't agree more!
Great job Sam
Super Impressive. I followed a similar path and have built a few kite and wing foil boards, it's extremely rewarding and amazing to see how well they've worked.
That's awesome!
I can’t believe how good the Bambu carbon 3d printers are
Glad you're back Sam. Cool video your homemade Hydrofoil rig set up.
No more Capt. Ron look either. Did Anna make you do that?
You really do enjoy a challenge--all challenges. Got for--you can do it. An impriration to those wanting to try something new.
For the foil that kept cracking in middle where it mounts. Maybe try embedding a flat metal into glass layup?
Quick question, was the music circa 20:00 from Andrew Rothschild? - if not then it has a real vibe of him and Delos {from the golden years}
hey sam, great video. can i suggest putting videos in a playlist again this season so it's easy to binge watch in order
That's a good idea!
Good job, mate!🤙
Awesome work, that looks fun and hard to catch into ✌️
So it is possible to just glue the short ends of eps/xps foam together and still have structural integrity? Great video! 😊
Nice haircut Sam and true that about dry suits.
Where have you been! Its got to be time to hit the high seas again! Or you could come to my home state of Michigan and sail around the Lakes
Cool Sam!
"we got the power turned off" is the best case I've ever heard for solar panels and LED lights
what if you used a sheet of aluminum sandwiched between the layers of fiberglass at the tension points where it tends to break?
Classic for you, the enthusiasm.
From a North Carolinian.
Good work !
A patient person who will endure discomfort to achieve his goals can do anything.
wow you need to be very strong and trained to be able to do this wingfoiling in such gusting winds….epic to watch…
Very impressive video! Not the least of which is that suit. Normally the mere thought of jumping in 38 degree water would cause my junk to shrivel up to almost nothing!
fantastic stuff!!! love it!!!
Well done ...
Man, Sam is soooo handy. I need him to come over to my house and fix some things.
That was a good one!
It's *Really* COOL Samuel!
🙏🦉
Nice job, man!
Main issue with snapping foilwings is the top laminate is too thin in the middle. Put 2-4 more layers of carbon, better unidirectional, on top-middle area.
When you print the core, make it 0.5-1mm thinner in that area to accommodate laminate thickness accordingly.
Thanks for the tips! Will do
Wow, haven't heard the term nicron wire since my model rocketry days in the 70's!
Hope Ann-Elin goes with you to Venice to capture some video.
She’ll be here tomorrow
I didn't know that you were in NC. I'm in Raleigh. If you are up this way, I'll buy you a beverage.
Just stumbled into your channel, very cool and will subscribe and follow along. Curious how long did it take to pick up wing foiling? Like basic ability to sail around up on foil ? Thanks!
I use West System 205/105 for boat repair at work. Despite being the "fast" hardener I still get a solid 15-20 minutes of working time before it starts to flash if I don't mix too much at once. By the way, do you have cad files for the foils you printed? Been learning on a friends setup and would be cool to make my own.
Nice🙏🏼 you went from jumping off a jetty to an airplane.skills🎉
Great stuff Sam! Keep it up man.
Appreciate it!
Moved the shop to the townhouse. What happene to the other shop you fixed up?
Some of the funniest footage Sam ever made.
Sam that was fucking sick!! Good job bro
You need a2' cord on that zipper so you can hook it to something to close and open
First time I’ve seen someone foiling in crocks, lol.
Ive never worn crocks but i have trouble finding wet shoes to fit the suit socks +regular sock in,may have to try them to protect the suit
Sam, if it doesnt work out for you in Venice, I'm sure there's still a slip in LA Harbor with your name on it! 😅
Cool content mano!
Finally, a haircut. Looks so much better! 🎉
He looks AWESOME with a short haircut!
So great! I want that suit
Nice. How did you cut out those pressure relief valves on the board while keeping it sealed?
I didn’t put any of those on my board. Ive never had an issue with the pressure
Wow got a hair cut. Look at you. ❤
Hey Sam. I have cut literally hundreds of R/C plane wing cores from polystyrene using a hotwire not much different from your setup. I have found stainless steel trace wire or aircraft locking wire works better and uses way less power than nichrome wire. I use a 12vac low voltage lighting transformer with no dimmer.
Cool. Thanks for the tip!
I just checked the wire I use and its 0.025" MALIN brand Aircraft locking wire, and the transformer model, for reference, is EUROLUX ET60T. My bow wire length is about 1m . The trick is to not force the wire through the foam because of the curve in the wire, and also not to go too slow, otherwise you lose size on the profile due to melting. If you watch some R/C wing building videos, youll learn a LOT. about what youre attempting. You need some sort of spar running the full span of your foil. I suggest an old wing batten or two, on edge, preferably a carbon item. Simply cut through your core perpendicular to the chord, spanwise, and glue the spar in and sand to size. Then do your skinning. I suggest carbon/kevlar combo weave. If the dynamic soaring guys can get speeds in the 500mph range with unimaginable G's, YOU can build a successful foil.@@samholmessailing
Sam I am totally impressed on how you tackled the wing issue. I was looking to do the same thing with my Carbon X1 and I would really like to know the NACA airfoil number, the span that you used , and the Chord length of the airfoid at your mounting locations?
I used this guys plan as a foil cross section. flukeskitesurfing.com/hydrofoil-plans-v3. I looked up the specs and pictures on manufacturers websites like f-one and axis to get ideas for what I wanted for the chord length and span. The holes are drilled to match an aluminum fuselage I bought secondhand.
HI Sam - Thank you for the info. It will be very helpful and is much appreciated. Your channel is so "bare" and so fun to watch BTW. Lots of respect. Cheers. Rudy@@samholmessailing
It looks great.. but it needs some sam holes
Instead of doing 3d core composites, perhaps try the vacuum bagging technique with 3D printed negative molds. Then just glue the two halves together, plus you can reuse the molds over and over if you wax it. The edges will be more refined as it's defined by the mold instead of wherever the composite wants to go.
Yes. I want to try that next.
The small wing looks WAY too small for learning dockstart.
The big one could work with more speed. Learn to pump with the wing - hold the wing on the front handle and learn to pump the board. It will help to learn dockstarts :)
If you ever need anything done at your NC shop I’m only 45 minutes away? Rick.
Hi Sam, What foam did you use for the board? (Apologies if you mentioned it in the viddy). I'm building amas for a sailing canoe and you gave me ideas.
I used xps foam. Its the pink or blue insulation foam you can get at the hardware store. Beware that you should use epoxy with it and not polyester resistant because polyester resin might melt the foam.
@@samholmessailing Thanks. 👍👍
The steel rod right down the middle of the wing doesn’t help much. All the load is in the skins. Which you proven now because it bent 😅
hey Sam Holmes, I told my wife that a little thing like a sailing season in the Med wouldn't keep you down😃
Did you write that moody synth music?
Hi do you have some 3mf files or stl?
www.printables.com/model/903556-1150cm2-hydrofoil
Are you willing to share the files?
Good looking hair cut man
Looks like everyone else.
@@tonybarnes3858 yeah ..respectable 😂
Super entertaining.
Love the hair cut you look so much better
Impressive
That was cool.
sam - how much do you weight?
Sam, have you tried hollow rods?
I have not tried that
you know you'll try a Bermuda crossing on that thing one day
