I hope all four of them reunite some day. The three piece was great, and so is the duo (Juice B Crypts is probably my most listened to Battles album), but god I miss the vibe that these four had together.
As broad of a palette as they still have, I think Ian and John need to work with a full band again. It'd be good for helping them break out of some of their usual tricks
Well, it's sad they couldn't keep the four-piece together, but shit they did more in a few years than most bands/musicians manage in a career, so I'm glad we have this!
I heard someone say that Tyondai's solo stuff is pretty good after he left. I don't know why they didn't get another vocalist - an instrumental band just doesn't have the same appeal ! *edit*: neither do guest vocalists
I was fortunate to see them twice in '07. When they played in Austin at FunFunFun Fest, Ian was struggling to get the notes down on Race:In, all while John was furiously beating that hi-hat to death. It took Ian about 3 minutes to finally get it, and John was just STARING HIM DOWN as if saying, "dude, get your shit together. I can't keep this going for much longer." After the song was over, John threw his stick down and said, "That's it, I'm done." It was awesome.
Only recently got onto these guys, had a fairly high play rate in my workshop the last few weeks. had heard they rock a live set pretty hard. Dayum, do they? absolutely mastering loops n samples, done right. Mad props. the next youtube suggested track has a somewhat similar sound, but far more downtempo. with 10 musicians on stage. these blokes are killer. That drummer... solid unit. beast of a slightly balding dude. no holds barred. Yes. Im off onto the internets to find a way to give them as much of my money to them as I can. you know, my bang giving them the most buck. Piracy is bad, mmkay, but without it, I wouldnt know of these gods of blowing out a tune.
It is currently 4 years later since you said that and I am here with my girlfriend fckd up eating baklava and prosciutto at 132 AM in Brooklyn NY reminiscing on how I played this at a talent show in 2008 when I was a senior in HS
These vocals wouldn't exist with BRAINIAC- the greatest band who's career got cut short right when it was beginning. Cedric from Mars Volta also lists BRAINIAC as one of his biggest influences. If you've never heard them- look them up RIGHT NOW.
Wouldn’t it be really easy to set the audio so t was actually in time with the video. I get that this happens when recording live sound but wouldn’t it be easy to fix in post?
“Due to Battles’ ambitions of finishing their second studio album followed by commitments to a full touring schedule in 2011, and Tyondai’s own commitments as a solo artist and his desire not to tour, both Battles and Tyondai have decided to move on without each other,” the band announced in an issued statement. “It is a sad but amicable split.” -- consequenceofsound.net/2010/08/tyondai-braxton-leaves-battles/
@@CasinoQueenScotland yeah i know, and do not get me wrong, i am a huge fan of battles! But this performance was not their best. Someone should swap out the beers they bring on stage for pop!
They never had good luck with festival performances. I imagine it must be hard to get everyone in the mix with limited time to set up. Even them as a two piece they still have difficulty at festivals

To throw race:in at the end of this set is such a brutal challenge for any drummer imo. To even have the endurance to complete the song is insane.
you need to be warm though ;)
The cameraman/director sure loves Stanier's sweaty back. I love the fact I finally have a decent sounding live Battles doing the Mirrored.
No shit, huh?

Also love that John and Ian start chugging beers halfway through the set.
well now it's a just a duo.
they're almost 20 years old now....

@GlennSyndallius Idk if it matters in the case of Battles. Even when Tyondai was in the band, the vocals were usually more of a texture thing anyway
Proshot Mirrored era stuff is so rare! Thanks for the upload!
Wow, I am so late in finding this band, but better late than never.... amazing.
The drummer is ex-helmet
I hate saying stuff like this, but, I wish this original line up had stayed together. What an insanely under-rated band they are.
I liked Tyondai in this band.
Totally unsustainable IMO.
Love the two piece. Don’t understand these comments all over their vids. They’re doin’ some of the best work of their career lately IMO
the race in beat changed my life in middle school and now i get to see it lol
their live performances have gotten way better over the years
Back when Eric Andre played in Battles, good times
finally someone but me makes this comparison thank you. haha
and christopher mcdonald on drums.
OrL
It was John C Reighly disguised as Eric Andre. And the drummer from Fugazi.
I like that the drummer keeps the crash up high enough so that he only hits it if he means it.
I love how it's hard to tell what's synth and what's guitar. Always a sign of an awesome band IMO.
Dave's bass tone got annihilated towards the end lol. Also they missed their cues in Race: In, good to know they're human.
It's.

I wanna travel to 2007 again and watch this show from the first line.

They don’t use samples
You have a funny way of typing guey, but I'm down with everything you just said! Todos!
@@spicylegato6024 it happens, like some vocals after Tyondai left. I suspect Dave had some prepared samples on one of his Line 6 Delay.

Tyondai all the way.

Not gonna lie, the performance was very shit. The queues were off, ian and tyondai were very sloppy, and the overall feel was very bad.
Literatetree sure... just post up your latest set from your world tour. Then we can pick it a part.
Festival shows in the middle of a tour are a fucking exhausting stress-fest. This is remarkably good under the circumstances.
