Agreed. Not very common. I can think of one I love though. A massive crowd in Rio singing along to Rush's YYZ, and it's an instrumental. It blew me away how into they were. All hopping in unison as well. It's on UA-cam somewhere.

It's no weirder than Alex Van Halen and his half a dozen bass drums! You should hear the guy's playing on the rest of the Battles album. Very simple, but some of it is way outta left field and some of the monstrous 32nd note rolls he pulls out...savage.

LOVE how the crowd cheer every change/progression in the song - I don't think I've come across that to this level before
I was noticing that myself. That said, it's one helluva performance.
The crowd really were there for music and music alone. Hiromi plays this fest and they cheer every possible bit of exciting turn in her music too.

when i'm 40 and have a midlifecrisis, this is the kind of music i wanna make with some buddy's in a garage.
I hope you can do better.
You’re gonna have to wait another 10 years, I checked your lab results
haha I'm already way past 40 and enjoying this sans any midlife crisis hahaha

My favorite song from Little Big Planet. Oh, and I've loved Helmet since i was a teenager in the 90's. Jon Stainer is one of my favorite drummers.
Stanier IS a genius. From Helmet to Battles, everything he does is hardcore.
Discovering Battles has got me through the lock down.
Welcome.
Wild, same thing here. Just found em last week and I can't get enough!
This song is my childhood
They played Boiler Room Camden London just before the lock down.Tiny venue,it would have been amazing. Gutted to have not discovered them before that.
Same
I love how John just puts his head down and plows through it like a boss. So much fucking stamina!
I'm sore just watching him lol

Japanese crowds can keep time with claps holy shit
Marcus Dembinski Because they listen to the sound of one hand clapping!!!
+Marcus Dembinski In my experience it is ONLY white americans that clap on 1 & 3. Everyone else does 2 & 4 (which is obviously the right way to go)
+tostare i always clap in polyrhythms.
:D
+tostare Hahahaha, I've never noticed that! Rugged U.S. individualism, I suppose.
accurate
The most astounding and innovative music I have heard in many years.
Without exclamation marks - for emphasis.
Hey can I steal that last line?
Don't know for what. Maybe a song.
If it's for a song, yes...but credit me. Ha! :-P
That's how I felt when I first heard them.
You might like Cardiacs
wow
I'm always blown away by how much of this song on guitar is just him playing hammer-ons, while he plays the keyboard with his picking hand.
This is like a experimental rock dj set. So much groove. So danceable.
"Atlas" is a fantastic song, and this is one absolutely incredible live version of it. Wow!
初めて見たけど、髭の人の印象が強すぎる。この曲が最大のヒット曲なのか?3日連続で見ている。やめられない。Brilliant! Really! They played great.
thats the highest damn cymbal I've ever seen a drummer use
It’s because the dummer thinks that people use cymbals too much in music so has it that high so he’s not tempted to use it that much.
Aimee W
With the added bonus of it looking cool as hell!
He has a close low setup to use that cymbal is to release the cramp
@@kodysqaud3016 that's a lie. It helps with his back problems.

After having the week from hell this is the first thing to put a smile on my face ...
stunning live sound. 21st century classic.
the drummer is a human metronome, amazing!
Today was my first time listening this song, and I think I need a Psychiatrist. I can't get this out of my head.

Andrew Arellano This wasn’t even released in 2006 though?

Is that the best drummer helmet ever had?
the guy from Betty?
I swear its him. That guy was so hip hop and bad ass.
He made that album...
That Is him
Yes, it's him. The man.
the greatest, John Stanier

Still waiting for Battles and Silversun Pickups to go on tour and have a “Cymbal Off”
I’d pay $1000 to see that happen.
Come visit to Japan this summer because battles will perform in Fuji Rock '16 and play this again!!
Can't, no money!
Oh boy! They've also added a little bit of harsh music at the beginning of the track... marvellous!
They look like three upper middle class dads from the suburbs that met at Spin class and decided to start a weird experimental rock band after running into each other on the weekend at the local Whole Foods and chatting for a couple hours about PowerPoint presentations, adjustable-rate mortgages, and tax breaks from charitable giving.
AsTheSeasonsGray no, Stanier's played with plenty of other people. Mike Patton for one, they're just very talented dudes
thats a bit specific
i love this comment lmao
maybe so, but they deliver the goods, in spades.
Modern humour everybody. Cringy isn't it.
Every time I hear this song, I start dancing like Ian Williams
Even though Tyondai is now gone, they performed very well.
i was working and this song started playing randomly on spotify, is so catchy.

that drummer man......endurance is insane

It's possible to play that way with one hand.
The sound of this live performance is amazing btw.
Just a kibd of tapping
Yes, it's possible with the right playing techniques, tools, sensibility, guitar sustain and pedals effects. For the rest is just tapping.
fuck, this is the best version of Atlas live i ever heard, do you have another videos from this show???
