I feed my pets mostly small leaves, from harvested palm trees. I grow small orange palm trees, because I use them for planks, I don't even need the nut, so I may just as well feed excess to animals, or eat it myself if I'm in an area with not much fatty meat. I have abundance of palm leaves, 10 small leaves fill feeding trough 100%. To not overbreed I remove the male from the pen. I use them only as a poop source and sanity boost if someone happens to die in my game.

If you stayed by the hive, the moment you stop swatting you can pick up honey or extract queen bee. When wearing armor you will not get a rash. This is also a trick how to get queen bee from wild bee spawn, if it is raining and you can't use torch. You need to time well when you press E and keep moving forward. After you stop swatting and cursing the extract wheel should be just about to complete before next attack of swatting. I always have my inventory full of wepons and cannot be bothered with torches.
Can I build an animal pen on a floating platform?
I don't think you can. If I remember correctly I wanted to build one on a roof and it wouldn't let me, and floating foundations behave the same way.
