Fusion and Prime 1 for me are tied for 2nd, with Dread at first. I really like Dread's difficulty curve, while Prime feels like mainly a lot of long hallways with too strict of a progression, as much as I do love the gameplay and aesthetics.
My top five would be 1-Prime 2-Dread 3-Fusion 4-Zero Mission 5-Echoes Honourable mention would be Super I don't need to explain Prime. Dread's complex maps and difficulty is actually why I love it, combined with the speed and smooth animations. Soundtrack is meh though. Didn't feel like true Metroid music to me. Fusion was the first Metroid game I ever played and zero mission just holds a special place in my heart. Plus, that menu music is top notch for me. I love Echoes and how difficult it is, the dark world and introduction of dark samus. I wanted to put super on the list, but couldn't bring myself to lowering any of the others. We all know why it's awesome.
I don’t get how a lot of people think dread is unfairly difficult? To me it’s the best or second best game in the series, the controls are great. I feel like super Metroid is far harder. I’ve beaten dread on dread mode and I’m not even that good at most games like some people are. I think I’m good at games but I’m not master by no means
Super and Prime are 1 and 2, period. I'm amazed at how well the Gamecube edition holds up as I play through it now. And there's a reason all Symphony of Night praise compares it to Super Metroid visually and gameplay wise.
Bizarrely I’ve only completed Prime (and also Prime Remastered) and Echoes but also played Dread up to final boss and half way at least thru Super and Corruption. In that case I’ll go; 1) Prime 2) Echoes 3) Dread 4) Corruption 5) Super Currently going through Prime Remastered for a second time but this time in hard mode. Once finished I think I’ll eventually complete Dread on Rookie Mode and then again on normal mode. Very tempted to boot up Echoes again but gonna hold out for the remaster. Super needs a remaster, hot take I know.
My top 5 are: 5. AM2R 4. Prime 1/Remastered 3. Zero Mission 2. Dread 1. Prime 2 Zero Mission is mad underrated, and is easily the most open to sequence breaks in the whole series. You have so much freedom. Dread beats it out only because it controls like an absolute dream. I prefer Prime 2 over Prime 1 despite the "3 Temples" style, which feels more like Zelda than Metroid. Prime 2 just has such good atmosphere, and IMO the best storytelling in the series. As you'll see, Super Metroid isn't even on my top 5, but if we limit the list to only official games, then it becomes closer. I still might pick Prime 3 over Super, if only because it has such immersive environments. GFS Valhalla is the series's most memorable location and it isn't even close IMO. But, Super has excellent level design. It's really the controls that hold it back
Happy to get this video recommended to me. GCN was my first console, so Prime was the first one I played and I probably am biased towards it. It scared the hell out of me. I was younger at the time. I'll never forget how terrified I was to get into that first "experiment" room with the massive parasite queen and dead space pirates. I still need to fire up Prime 3 sometime. I'm aware it's not the same kind of game at all and suffers from the motion control gimmicks, but I still want to give it a fair chance. I experienced Prime 2 for the first time a few years ago and thought it was excellent as well. My fear tolerance was way higher as an adult, but the re-animated soldiers still got a jump out of me. I was shocked the game was rated "T". The boss battles are superior in almost every way. I played the game at a low point in my life and made the mistake of doing it with a guide. I'll need to re visit Prime 2 sometime in the near future and go in blind. For 2D metroids, I've only played zero mission and dread so far. Zero mission was a fun game. I died a few times but never got super frustrated with it. I still need to play Fusion and Super metroid. When I played Dread, I felt a lot of frustration with it. The later EMMI definitely pissed me off. I don't really understand why the parry window is so small, modern displays already have a lot of input latency compared to old CRTs... So a fair parry window would have kept the pace/chase up. Instead you get "GAME OVER" load outside the room and try again. By the 3rd or 4th death against the purple one, I wasn't even afraid anymore, just annoyed. As much as I understand the whole "getting caught means death. Evade at all costs" strategy of getting your blood pumping, that doesn't work when I became apathetic towards being caught and reloading again. I'm doing a second playthrough now and I'm enjoying it a fair amount. The weaker music is sticking out a bit more on this playthrough... I'm noticing I can't think of most the songs off the top of my head like all other metroid entries, which is sad. I remember the EMMI sound track and chase music.. but not much else.
Putting Fusion above Dread and Super is based af, hats off. EDIT: My top 5: 1. Fusion (personal taste) 2. Zero Mission (could trade places with Fusion depending on my mood. I think it's better honestly, but I prefer Fusion's narrative focus) 3. Dread (I prefer 2D Metroid to Prime overall, and I think Dread may be the best 2D Metroid in a vacuum, but I'm still a sucker for the GBA duology) 4. Prime 1 5. Other M (Yes, it's 2D Metroid in 3D. Bite me.) Honorable mention to Super. I grew up on the GBA duology and the Prime trilogy, so I don't have nostalgia for Super. I did play it later in life and intend to revisit it, but I shared a lot of the issues mentioned in this video, and frankly still think Fusion and Zero Mission are just kind of better.
you had to play the original in the 80s to understand why it's a mind blowing game. plus, it still has the most iconic soundtrack and sound effects, even in 8bit style 🙌
The music is great, the enemy sprites and animations are beautiful for the time, but Samus' sprite is incredibly worse in comparison, and the gameplay freaking sucks
I always find it refreshing to see someone who has criticism of super doesn't place it at the top of their list, I find myself mostly agreeing with your perspective of it. While I played a small amount of prime on the GameCube I only finished it recently with the release of Prime remastered. I learned then that I am mostly a 2D Metroid fan. Prime has a great sound track and incredible atmosphere, but I prefer the third person gameplay of a fast and nimble Samus which is why I love Dread so much and speed run it to this day. My list would go: Dread Fusion Zero mission Super AM2R
My top 3 Super Metroid Dread Fusion The Original Prime is a great game, it's just too slow paced. Granted, I haven't played Remastered, and I'd like to. No matter how you rank the games, any Metroid game is far above so many other games. No such thing as a bad Metroid game (yes, even Other M was a lot of fun).
Dread is not top 5 man, sorry, maybe top 10. The very best are: metroid 2 (gameboy), prime 1, zero mission, prime 2, super metroid. Yes prime 2 and super are the very best. Dread is more a souls-like with metroid characters.
Sorry, but I have to disagree on this list. Metroid 3 was the game that shattered records. For several years it held a #1 spot despite the release of other games or consoles that surpassed its tech. When i worked for EA, it was required reading so to speak. I can write pages about that game and Im not even its biggest fan. Do more in depth research on your lists otherwise you are just speaking in an echo chamber. Take care.
Glad to see you like fusion and prime 2 i think those games dont get near enough love! My personal ranking is 1. Fusion 2. Prime 2 3. dread and prime remastered tied 4. 0 mission 5. Super Metroid
I was super excited to watch this video until I saw that you put dread at number five. I just can’t abide. I’m sorry. I would’ve given you a pass if you put super number one and put dread number two but putting it at number five is just not forgivable. I can’t.
Finished the video. Yikes. I mean it’s a good video, you speak well. Good visuals. Extremely novel opinions. I have never seen a list look like this and I couldn’t have predicted it in a million years. Dread is my favorite, Prime is second. I like Super fine, but honestly I’d take a lot of games over it. I loved Fusion, Zero Mission, and the original. All Metroids are good Metroids… But Dread and Prime are the best ones.
for me and only ones I've played 1. Dread 2. Super 3. Prime 4. Prime 3 5. AM2R 6. Samus Returns 7. Zero Mission 8. Echoes 9. Corruption 10. Fusion MASSIVE GAP 11. Other M
Happy to see Dread and 2 Prime games in there with Prime at the top. I think it's about time for a Super Metroid remake, I've tried multiple times over the years but I just can't get into it. Fusion and Dread to me are more enjoyable, even the OG NES Metroid.
Fusion and Prime 1 for me are tied for 2nd, with Dread at first. I really like Dread's difficulty curve, while Prime feels like mainly a lot of long hallways with too strict of a progression, as much as I do love the gameplay and aesthetics.
Unpopular Opinion Samus Returns is pretty underrated.
Not unpopular. It's true.
My top five would be
1-Prime
2-Dread
3-Fusion
4-Zero Mission
5-Echoes
Honourable mention would be Super

15:22 true but also the BEST music (remix of lower norfair from Super). What a banger.
Bizarrely I’ve only completed Prime (and also Prime Remastered) and Echoes but also played Dread up to final boss and half way at least thru Super and Corruption. In that case I’ll go;

I love the challenge of the bosses makes it satisfying when I overcome them.

My top 5 Metroid games:
1. Dread
2. Samus Returns
3. Fusion
4. Super Metroid
5. Other M
Interesting to see Other M on here - that game is not as bad as everyone says.
@@crywolfplays story is bad in English localization, but in Japanese with new right translation it's pretty solid, imo.

I don’t agree with the list but love to see a fellow Metroid UA-camr doing their thing. So keep up the good work
This comment is so refreshing, I appreciate it.
I'd probably go with Super Metroid, Prime, Zero Mission, Dread, then Prime 3. 6th, 7th, and 8th bonus spots go to Hunters, Fusion, and Pinball

My personal ranking is
1. Fusion
2. Prime 2
3. dread and prime remastered tied
4. 0 mission
5. Super Metroid
I love this list too. 0 mission doesn't get enough appreciation.
Switch places for Super Metroid and Fusion and there ya go.
For sure. Fusion was a good game with a good story, but it was way to linear and kind of stayed off the Metroid formula with limited exploration.
I was super excited to watch this video until I saw that you put dread at number five. I just can’t abide. I’m sorry. I would’ve given you a pass if you put super number one and put dread number two but putting it at number five is just not forgivable. I can’t.

MASSIVE GAP
11. Other M
Happy to see Dread and 2 Prime games in there with Prime at the top. I think it's about time for a Super Metroid remake, I've tried multiple times over the years but I just can't get into it. Fusion and Dread to me are more enjoyable, even the OG NES Metroid.
A super metroid remake would be awesome.
My personal top 5 would go
Echoes > Dread > Super > Prime > Corruption/Fusion
Kind of surprised zero mission was up there
Original>Prime 1>Super Met>Prime 2>Prime 3
That being said I havent played dread, and honsetly, Id play any of those 5 at almost any moment.
NES, SNES & Prime are the best
(each ahead of their time and generational defining games)
oh you give Super Metroid third best eh? how generous of someone who just recently started being interested in metroid
lol fusion over super Metroid?? Nah
If prime 2 isn't number one you need help.
you can just pirate zero mission bro, nobody cares
this content creator needs to move on from metroid, and focus on botw 2
