Well done to whoever managed to sneak this past a poll - jazz never seems to get nominated, let alone win

There's something about brass and other lung-powered instruments. The source of the sound is coming literally from within you. Whereas, plucking and strumming, striking a piano key is more external.

Miles plays trumpet. What makes this album great isn't just his trumpet playing, it's Miles role as a composer and arranger.

My 10 year old daughter has this album on vinyl. She love jazz music. She says it makes her feel calm. We listen a lot to the jazz station on Sirius XM.

The alto saxophone on this one is by the legendary John Coltrane. This quintet is one of the greatest set of musicians ever put together.

This music inspires a meditation of thought and feelings it takes you on an emotional journey. Speaks volumes without a word ever spoken. You almost feel a wave of relaxation that regenerates the soul. Great great music.

Jazz is like african american classical music (every bit as complex, sometimes)...and im a painter/artist, but jazz IS the premiere american art form, THEE american artform , the first artform ever that was totally unique, in every way , to the U.S., only in america could it be born, & all the other american musics followed.....itll live forever, especially the be-bop guys, like miles/dizzy/bird, ect, too many to name....delve, man.

This is one of my most favorite songs ever, I was new to jazz and the best advice is look at the artist that are playing and look into the project there in. Also so many styles of jazz I personally loves the blue jazz smooth shit but its your choice cool cat!

Sketches of Spain is another classic Miles Davis album released the year following Kind of Blue. Check out "Will o' the Wisp" for a taste and the twelve minute opus "Solea" for the deep dive.

The cocktail, suit, and a cigar or cigarette to complete the ensemble. You said you feel like you have a baby's brain going into this; no better way, because, like a baby you are eager to devour. At the end of the song, you mentioned allowing your mind to take you where it will. There you go.

My first introduction to Miles was his 1969 album Bitches Brew… so different from this. And I started to get everything he put out.. then I started to go back into his catalogue and it was all amazing… Listen to his album Bitches Brew… it was out there…

To understand jazz greats, one must understand the instruments.
The instruments will speak to you a different language. I was about 17 when my dad turned me on to miles, duke Ellington and Coltrane. He taught me how to comprehensively listen.....it took some time.
Check out a Coltrane disciple in Mccoy Tyner. His album "nights of ballads and blues" taught me how to listen. I'm 54 now and still listening.

Dude! So glad to see you back! There's always a way around it... You said you feel like you have a baby's brain when it comes to jazz? That's exactly what you should have. The worst jazz players are the ones that think they know it all. Trust me I was raised by jazz musicians

  • @akschu1

4:00 let me help you out.... Miles' trumpet is so bluesy and full that it doesn't even sound like a trumpet which is usually brassy sounding. Cannonball and Coltrane saxophones are also so rich and full that they don't sound like squeaky reed instruments. The rhythm section is so sync'd but not. It has a very live sound because Miles insisted they not practice it together. It's amazing because absolutely nobody else sounds like this. I could listen to this the first time and tell you who played in it because of the distinct sounds these guys make.

This album was somewhat (some songs) highly experimental & prob not the best introduction...do john coltrane “my favorite things”, or Dizzy gillespie “a night in tunisia” studio album version from the late 1940’s, i cant remember the album name

    • @jasonremy1627
      @jasonremy1627 Рік тому +2

I don't know. For post-bop jazz, this is maybe the most listenable album there is. Every track is very approachable, even though Miles composition technique is so experimental. I mean, this isn't "A Love Supreme" or some crazy Ornette Coleman shit.

    • @vincentvancraig

@@jasonremy1627 oh, i hear u 1000%, i love *kind of blue*, its very , super, listenable...& i think brad enjoyed it, but i think as an introduction to jazz that “a night in tunisia”, or “salt peanuts” wouldve dazzled him a little more...something not so sleepy (& again, i love this whole album, & song btw, its gorgeous)...idk, & post-bop is a whole other conversation (which this is, yes, but i don't think a newbie would ever guess that this song & ornette coleman were in the same category ...which, i guess they are, chronologically....) ...anyway, for a post-bop recommendation id go with coltrane “my fave things”, its over exposed, but almost everybody knows that song to some degree & therefore, itd be a good introduction (& its muched loved by casual, part-timer, jazz fans)....anyway, so sorry...im always so compulsive with my comments about what i would prefer ppl’s introductions, or first time listens to stuff should be....whether its specific songs of rock bands, or even whole genres, like with this comment🙄, ha:/

Ever hear the phrase “teo become one?” Yall work so well together I just don’t feel the vibe when im watching brad solo. It’s the two of you together - your dynamic that makes it entertaining.
