Bullet Points:
1. Get up at the same time. EVERY SINGLE DAY. Even weekends. Even if you only got 20 minutes sleep. GET UP.
2. ONLY GO TO BED WHEN YOU CANNOT KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN. If when in bed you cannot sleep. GET UP.
3. GET UP EVERYTHING SINGLE DAY AT THE SAME TIME. I know I'm repeating this but this creates a SLEEP DRIVE THAT YOU NEED.
That is basically what sleephygiene is😉
I'm up at 3:30am for a 6am shift four days a week and doing this seven days would lessen my quality of life.
Applaud those who can do this, for me I'll rely on THC gummies and magnesium tablets ☺
Thank you Wayne. This is a beauty issue and a quality of life issue.
Thank you!!!
I'm a shift worker not possible to go to bed the same time
If you have never suffered from insomnia you have no idea how debilitating it is. It is a horrible thing to suffer from and affects your whole life. Such a helpful video Wayne thank you for sharing & highlighting the subject🙏🏻😴😌
I know! 10 years ago I didn't sleep not even a minute for a month straight. I ended up locked in the psychiatric ward for a week after a suicide attempt.

OK, so a few days ago you solved my hooded eye/eyeliner issues, and now you're going to help me with my chronic insomnia disorder? This is my favourite channel ever!!!😄
Was thinking the exact same thing!!! Lmao
@Mike Cleveland Thank you! I'll have a look!
Sir can we sleep if we feel sleepy during the day plz reply me
@@punitgurung4672My question also!
What do you mean helped you with your hooded eyes?
I love that you didn’t overthink posting this because you’re a “makeup channel,” that mindset has always felt backwards to me. We’re all human and we all go through the human experience, super interesting video thank you for sharing! I haven’t slept more than 4 hours consistently in months 😅
Hi , I hope you don’t mind me asking ( I can barely see your profile pic on my phone as it’s so tiny so I do hope I don’t cause any offence ) but are you in your 30’s?
I only ask as I’ve noticed as I’ve hit my mid- late 30’s I get 4hrsa night . 5 Max if it’s a weekend and I’ve no alarm to be up for
I can’t fall asleep early and I have to wake up early for work but around mid afternoon- early evening every day I feel SO DRAINED! Then I get my second wind from about 8-9pm
Do you
Struggle from the afternoon onwards on your 4hrs sleep or are you doing ok on it?
Sorry to ask all this, It’s just I’ve been dying to ask someone with a similar sleep issue to me.
Everyone around me goes to bed early and gets a full 8-10 hrs aaaagh!! Lol 😆
@@LxUxNxA I’m not the person you asked but I’m 31 and I’ve had this exact issue for the past almost 2 years. It’s now to the point where I cannot fall asleep before 3/4am. I can get in bed at 9pm, lights off/no phone/all the “tips” I’ve read to help fall asleep… start trying to sleep immediately and I will still lie awake until 4. Wake up at 7/8 and I’ll be fine all morning (coffee is my life source), then after lunch from 2/3pm until about 8/9pm, I’m literally nodding off - can’t keep my eyes open, can’t keep a thought together, and if I laid down right then I know I’d be asleep within minutes (this is wild for me, my entire life I have never been able to sleep while it’s light out - even with total blackout curtains. I’ll get to nap every once in a while on a weekend day now, and im convinced that’s the only thing keeping me going because I am not getting enough sleep on a regular basis to sustain human life 😂). I don’t have a solution or anything; just wanted to let you know you’re not alone, im dealing with this mysterious and horrible phenomenon as well 😩
I love it when you offer alternate content. Thank you for this interview. Circadian rhythm is so important to health and longevity.
I love that he starts out calling out the sleep hygiene "cure" that just keeps getting cycled out there. Thank you for acknowledging that it is often not that easy. Wonderful video! Thank you for this posting sharing the struggles of real life - and for sharing hope.
I know this will resonate with so many people. I had a bad bout of anxiety where I would wake up from a deep sleep, feeling like my heart was going to explode. I was afraid to fall asleep and stared a cycle of terrible insomnia. I definitely understand how the mind won’t let you go to sleep. It is absolutely a fight or flight feeling. Sheer panic.
Glad you found help and are sleeping better!
That is what makes Wayne such an amazing person! He always is sharing things that help other people. Always! You are such a wonderful person! Thank you for your essence!
Thank you so much for this. I am 53 and I’ve suffered from insomnia most of my life. My brain just will not shut down at night, and the spiral of anxiety about not being able to sleep is very real. Even when I do sleep, I wake up so often during the night I feel as if I am awake more than I am asleep. I usually manage to get into a deep sleep by 4:00-5:00 a.m., and then I have to get up at 6:00! This often results in my hitting the snooze button 10 times and being late leaving the house. I have tried just about everything and have almost given up hope, but I’m going to listen to Joseph’s book and do whatever he advises. I just purchased the audio book. THANK YOU for posting this video.
Klonopine saved my life. I was only taking it as needed. One hour before bed.
I feel for you. I am suffering too!

And did it work? Was it helpful? I've been with one sleep specialist and then taking a course from the insomnia coach. They'd be helpful for a while and that's it. Set backs kept on happening. I am about to give up and go for meds (been using it as needed since I don't want to be addicted).
Lived with insomnia for 20 years since menopause. Thanks Wayne. You are so helpful and always make my day. Love you. ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for addressing this! I haven’t slept well without medication for over 30 years. I hate to give up and this will be helpful. You’re just wonderful Wayne. ❤️
Right there with you Pam. The last time I slept good was with medication probably 20 years ago. I deal with the insomnia now because I don't want to take the pills. I'm more okay with the insomnia. The comment about the vallium, Lunesta, and Seroquel kind of upset me a little bit. I'm sure it was just meant to be a joke but that is actually how a lot of people go to sleep these days. Not healthy and not really that funny. Not to mention for those of us who have sleepwalking issues pills are not always a very good option. My last sleepwalking episode was many many years ago but for some reason if I take a sleeping pill of any kind I'm almost guaranteed to have an episode. If I didn't have THC it would be a real struggle. But I definitely don't want the pills. This is a serious issue for a lot of people and it lingers into every other aspect of your life when you never get a good night's sleep!
@@autumnmathes5364 I’ve been in pills for years and you are right, they scare me. I feel I’ll never get off them but I’m afraid to even try now. I used to sleep-eat on one of them and gained a bunch. I still fight that. It’s such a vicious mess.
@@pamclare6222 yes eating in your sleep and sleepwalking I think are very common issues with a lot of these types of medications. It did take me years to get off of them and although I feel 100% better I do not sleep better!
Insomnia is horrible. My issue wasn't falling asleep, it was staying asleep. One time I wrote down for my old Dr everytime I woke up throughout the night. The longest period was 43 minutes of sleep before I woke up. She put me on seroquel. So here I am half awake eating straight out of the fridge and gaining 50 lbs. Now, I also have severe anxiety disorder (as did my mother, and as does my son and 2 of my daughters). Another Dr put me on Amitriptyline. But the dose was extremely high but it did work. Now, I am with a wonderful Dr. I am prescribed a very low dose Ativan for my anxiety disorder and I find myself rarely taking them. For sleep, she has me on 3 mg extended release xanax to take at 8 pm and 12.5 mg extended release Ambien when I go to bed. By the time I remember to take my Xanax, I am already in bed and my Ambien is by my bedside because I didn't need it. My sleep schedule has always been a mess. My husband has stage IV pancreatic cancer so that's enough in itself to have anxiety and not be able to sleep. Now, when I wake up at 4 am, I will stay up. I have been gardening this summer for the first time in years and it is exhausting. There are nights I pass out with nothing. I try to keep busy. Monday - Fri is non stop with constant paperwork for my husband. Sat and Sun we will try to do something together if he is feeling well. No matter how we do it, we have to sleep because sleep deprivation is not a pretty thing. I do what my body tells me to do. Getting up at 4 am is fine for me because it gives me "me" time for an hour of so. Then, I will do my skincare. Everyone is different. Pills scare me also. I was addicted to opiates for 15+ years. Pain I can live with, sleep I cannot.
@@autumnmathes5364 I once knew a gal who subscribed to a diet plan where they shipped her food weekly, one of those subscription diet plans. She woke up one day to find crumbs in her bed and found she had eaten almost the entire week's worth of food in one night, while asleep. Granted they were small meals, but good lord! Sleep eating is frightenting.
I really appreciate yoy posting videos that aren't ONLY makeup ... it shows that you have a caring kind heart and you appreciate your audience. Thank you 🙏🏽🥰🇨🇦
Dear, dear, dear Wayne,

It was an absolute joy. Thank you Wayne. You made me feel so relaxed so I think it came across fantastic because of it. I hope it helps a lot of people sleep.
Thank you, will buy the book.
I would be up for 3 days straight, not a nap, not as much as a wink. I honestly felt like a wondering soul, the only thing missing was the rattling chains. After much needed therapy and meditation, I am somewhat better.
I have PTSD (Chronic) and Nightmares throughout the entire night and I have a severe chronic pain disorder. I haven't slept and the sleep doctors I've seen have not been able to help me. Thank you for talking about this part of your life and showing us his work! I'm excited to work on my trauma surrounding sleep with my therapist and to really do my best not to be afraid of sleeping or the pain I feel when I wake up. I've been on a sleep tablet for ten years. Some nights I have gone without it and I think I could if I can get my wakefulness in order. Tha k you for these tips and anecdotes because I was really considering that bed cooling device but hopefully I may not need that to fall asleep. I'm so glad you shared this interview with us, Wayne!
Omg.. I kid u not. I just did some meditation as a part ot my new process to help me sleep. I had youtube on my TV screen but had stopped watching to do the meditation. Opened my eyes and your video was on thr home page. I just thought.. This is a sign..1 mth since my insomnia started. Starting to become anxious about it now.
Thank you for all the help. The reported info saying lack of sleep is killing you, just makes you much more fearful every night....
It’s unfortunate that most countries don’t allow medicinal cannabis to be legalized. It’s great for me. I’ll never stop using it. Not just for sleep, but for anxiety, depression, migraines, chronic pain, nausea, pms, etc. It’s the main medicine I reach for daily. Wish I could share it with everyone.♥️
Can you share what helps you sleep- just got my med cann card.
Cannibis is what caused my insomnia.
This is the best sleep advice EVER! Thank you Wayne and Joseph. I'm really looking forward to listening to your book (pleased it is on audio).
Thank you for this! I’ve had really bad sleep patterns my whole life, sometimes not being able to sleep a week on end. This week is one of those weeks. I’m so happy to hear advice that isn’t the “bedtime hygiene” type (a phrase I just learned while listening to this!) because that advice has never helped. I’ve never really given myself the opportunity to listen to my body signals and just go to bed when I actually feel sleepy. So going to start with that tonight and see how it goes. Thank you both, the world needs content like this.
*I loved this, more interviews please!* 🙏🏻
Wow. This was so validating. From the bad internet tips to the tools that actually work… I agree. Everyone should hear this!

Absolutely brilliant video 🎉thank you so much for it. I've been having sleep issues for 2 years now and I'm totally fed up with it. All things you guys had been talking 💯💯💯 about me. I'm going to buy the book and finally start just sleep🙏
Thank you so much for posting this. If anything I feel understood and not alone. I will try just waking up at the same time. Thank you so much
Thank you both for your honesty. So relatable and helpful.
Thank you for this video, I've noticed it's a lot of tips that we've heard before, but this video sets apart the trash from treasures in times of advice and helped me to realise how some sleep advice are quite contradictory.
Telling you too sleep for certain hours and then saying you should wake up at the same time but you're not supposed to go to bed until you're "tired"... But you can't regulate when you're "tired" in a way (especially people with sleep issues) so how can you wake up at the same time and get 8 hours of sleep if you can't be in bed until you're sleepy?
LOVE this.
I identify with so much that is being said here, especially the fight or flight. I will be employing this, thank you both!
Wow! I didn’t expect this.
Your a wonderful man 🥰
I’m awake watching this third night up. Thank goodness for your awesome make up techniques to hide my dark eyes😂

Update: ordered the book and just finished it. Easy and very funny to read! It had so many insights for me and as a psychologist I thought I knew a lot about sleep (hint: alpha waves are not mentioned once 😅). I’m very keen to try the tips!
I ordered his book thank you both.
Thank you for this ❤
Thank you so much for this Wayne so informative feel like I am not alone x
I've never felt so stressed about sleep nor dreaded being in bed more than the couple of months I spent in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for sleep. The intense black-and-white sleep hygiene regimen w copious documentation required (with no corresponding education abt sleep!) made me feel incompetent and put 24/7 focus on sleep! I really don't worry about it at all now, but that's bc I know meds will help me sleep. Not a great solution so I'm looking forward to the book! Thanks Wayne!
Nice to hear from someone who actually has been through chronic insomnia and worked it out, thanks! I feel like people such as Matt Walker just scare the shit out of people with all the disease talk.
Wow I got up this morning wondering how I will make it through the day after another night of insomnia and here you are!!!!!!!
Get fed up of all the so called experts saying don't do this don't do that etc etc on UA-cam filling people with total bullshit, this is the best video for advice I've seen feels like a weight lifted off my shoulders, great advice many thanks.
Thank you so much , I haven''t slept in years and I have been on Amitriptyline 75 MLG but I stopped it a couple of years ago I only use it now in conjunction with my migraine tablets and still I don't sleep . Looking forward to reading the book . Sending love & peace xx
Thank you Wayne ! Fantastic vidio . I also spent years on amitriptyline and just stopped. No more sleep for me and waking to smashing glass sounds . Wayne, as a life-long insomniac since I was a young child (so it’s more than 50 years), I truly appreciate your generosity in buying Joseph Pannell’s book, interviewing him and posting the video on your channel. Thank you so much ♥️
i bought the book after watching 20 minutes of this, first off it’s a great read! it’s hilarious, informative and very relatable. read the whole thing in 2 evenings and already implementing the protocol and feeling like i’m finally on the right track, saved myself $300 from the cbt-i app i was about to purchase. highly recommend 😴
This video is gold man. Thank you very much, I'm getting a sleep study done soon but I don't snore, so it's not sleep apnea lol. Most likely insomnia since it takes me soooo long to fall asleep. Soo hard to find good reliable information on sleep 😴 and this is really helpful 😊

This was so good, I was literally yawning at the end of it (in a good way, lol.) I've been a "chronic insomniac" for around 30yrs and have spent the last year reducing my night meds on my own to try and have a more natural sleep pattern. This made complete sense to me Wayne so thank you so much for covering it. Much gratitude from Glasgow, Scotland 🙏🏻❣️

@@carolynloughran5450 Yeah, I've heard of Carnoustie Carolyn. I've never been but I've seen it on a bus road and road signs I've gone by. I'm sure I've gone past it or driven through it in my lifetime. Hi to my fellow Scot. 🌻💖

Ok, I just learned the term Exploding Head Syndrome and I don't know why I've never looked it up before. Nothing seems to change the fact that I cannot sleep.

I always thought I had insomnia. I was going from doctor to doctor for thyroid issues and it took year before I got treatment. Once my meds were adjusted the insomnia was gone. I sleep like I’m dead now.
Sometimes there is something wrong with your body that messes up your sleep. Thyroid issues for example are extremely common in women.
What symptoms did you personally have due to the thyroid problems?
Thank you!!!
Thanks soo much for your sharing
Thank you so much. Brilliant video. I have just ordered the book. One thing to ask is should people avoid napping in the day if they aren't sleeping at night?
I'm so sorry, Wayne. So very sorry you have been a target of haters. Let all this love carry you away from fear and negativity. Only love and support from me. ❤️
Thanks so much for sharing ure story Wayne. I also got the jerks, esp after nytol. When it started I had the jolts and heartburn wen I woke up. Also night sweats. And so the spiral to insomnia began. No more night sweats but noticed that if I got in to a fight a night, I'm not gonna sleep well. That made me start to think cortisol is up. So now I focus on stress relief the most and do deep breathing exercises wen I wake.
How are you now ? Maybe try ashwagandha if you still have issues!
I wish you the very best
If a good night's sleep isn't the basis of beauty I don't know what is. Thank you for posting
Physical and mental beauty for sure
I’m on 30 days of no sleep. Started out of nowhere. I’m in the obsessive ritual part. I had a grieving panic attack and fell asleep for five hours and I was so thrilled that I might have broke the cycle. Nope. It got worse. I slept 2 hours a night since. Fall asleep at 6am up at 8am. I have no issues at home. I have a happy life. I am working with a doctor. Blood work shows no problems.
How are you now ? Hope you’re better
Yes are you better? What did you do?
Asmr cured my insomnia 🥰
Thank you for this, I’m literally struggling with this and it is very frustrating. I used to wake up at 5am & loved it. But I feel like I can’t anymore bc I don’t get enough sleep bc my body wakes up on its own around 2:30- 3am and cannot fall back to sleep until 4, so it’s throws my sleep pattern off. So now I wake up at 6ish and it does not align with my goals. I workout, but even that doesn’t help. I hope this works. I think my hormones are the problem bc it started last year when I removed my birth control that I had for 8 years. Idk.
Talk to your ob gyn- hormone therapy might help.
I just got to where I just roll with it. When I can’t sleep I get up and clean the house, do laundry, do buddy work. I take naps during the day when I feel tired. Otherwise I try not to worry about it. I got enough worries
TYFS!
You talked about Hypnic Jerks. I used to get these a lot, from childhood. Later, as an adult I was advised to take Magnesium for migraines; well it didn't help the migraine much but the hypnic jerks stopped. When we were going through a tight period I stopped taking my supplements. The Hypnic Jerks came back, so no matter how little spare money we have Magnesium is a priority. My problem is waking up about 3:00 am. have had this for 20 years.
SO much research on insomnia. And I get it ..... lots of people are plagued by it. However, I suffer from a debilitating sleep disorder, where not much research is being done at all. I have narcolepsy. And not the kind depicted by Mr. Bean!! Besides the constant drowsiness, I suffer from emotional/traumatic/vivid dreams every single night. I don't forget them They continue to play on in my head during the day. When I sleep, it's like living a second life in another dimension. I wake up extremely groggy, some times crying, sometimes angry but always sad. It's exhausting because I feel unrested after a night of so much brain activity. I've had 3 sleep studies. I've seen a sleep therapist, a psychologist, and several neurologists. Nobody has any answers or useful suggestions. I've inquired with many sleep research clinics, but nobody seems interested in doing research on this. I know I'm not alone. Most narcoleptics have these same issues. I DREAM of a day where people like me will have resources available to help us. It's an awful thing to suffer from! Just wanted to share the other side of the coin .......
Hi Wayne I have just watched your video with joe as I was advised to watch when I called the sleep charity helpline .. it’s brilliant . I have insomnia and have had it since august.. it’s not as bad as it was nights with no sleep whatsoever and terrible anxiety doing everything wrong. I was so desperate I pleaded with my gp to put me on sleeping tablets then due to them being addictive I changed to amitriptyline which I am still taking 20mg however it doesn’t work completely.. I go through cycles and because I’m menopausal ,my hormones play a big part into my failing to get off to sleep. I am definitely going to visit joes channel as well. But when you talked about amitriptyline it made me think how I could do with coming off it now as it puts me into a false sedated sleep and then I know I have too much sleep one night then can’t sleep the next etc etc but with the fight or flight and palpitations stopping me from sleeping even when I feel sleepy to go to bed I’m one big mess. Can you please advise me how I should come off the drugs ? I’m a mess!
Watching this while having insomnia

I bought his Kindle book straight away. It was only £2 and a bit on Kindle.
Does he have any advise for shift workers? I’m studying nursing and I’m worried about the constant change of shift times. Does it not matter so much if you have the 17hrs of wakefulness that you talked about?
I have had insomnia since I was a child. I am 73 years old now and still have insomnia.
Wow how you managed for so many years to be alive? I feel like am dying !

Very timely, Wayne... as per usual... 3AM and wide awake 🇦🇺🙄 Thankyou both...
Curious...how many sufferers also sleep-walk...
I've had it since I was little...
I wake at that time too but I wake with extreme panic. I'm sorry you are going through sleep problems it's horrible. I hope this man can help 🙏
@@lunakat7020 Thanks, same for you. 🙏 I often wake in panic, too.
Happily, I enjoy reading...and watching UA-cam, obviously 😁
I'm not into medication. I'm happy if I get 4 hours in.
@@lunakat7020 If you're waking in a hot, sweaty panic it may be due to Sleep Apnea! 😴 Your Brain is waking you up so you don't DIE!
This happened to me & after doing a more sensitive Sleep Study it was discovered that I stopped breathing 30+ times an hour (more than every 2 minutes)!
I immediately purchased a Snore Guard (avail online & at Drugsstores) which keeps your airway open. Try not to sleep on your back, your throat closes.
While waiting 1st for an Oxygen machine & then finally insurance approved my Cpap machine. (nice & Quiet) What a HUGE DIFFERENCE IN MY LIFE!
SLEEP IS SO IMPORTANT!
I get the BEST SLEEP if I do mild physical activity during the day. Even a gentle walk in Nature or just a few blocks in your neighborhood will tire your body out & relax your mind as well... Let your thoughts come & go like clouds in a gentle breeze... 🚶♀️
Sleep Well, Sweet Dreams All! 😴
@@bernitajenkins3180 Thank you, I get about four hours too I have medication but It doesn't work. I find reading helpful I do wonder what it would be like to get eight hours straight through the night 😊
@@lunakat7020 "To sleep, perchance to dream" ...yeah, thanks for that Will. 😁 We just DREAM of sleep, eh?
