18:32 - My preset for epic 80s leads
John Mayer's 'Sob Rock' album has reignited my love for 80s soft rock guitar parts & tones.
Tracks like Last Train Home, Wild Blue and Shot in the Dark are full of guitar parts and sounds that are reminiscent of the soft rock hits of the 1980s - think Don Henley, Cutting Crew, Toto, Duran Duran, Dire Straits... the list goes on.
In this UA-cam video I set out to create my own track that was also inspired by these artists and in doing so, I wrote a few different guitar parts that are intentionally reminiscent of the guitar playing and tones heard on the Sob Rock album.
For the tones I used the Archetype: Tim Henson plugin from Neural DSP which was perfectly suited to this video/track as it has everything you need for chasing 80s guitar tones - crystal clear clean tones, high gain leads, compression, chorus, beautiful sounding delays and reverbs and so much more - you can download my presets via the link at the top of the description box.
The four different guitar parts I came up with are:
- Single Note Staccato Riffs
- Double-stop Diads
- Nylon String Textures
- Epic 80s Leads

Man what an intro. O had tp listen to it 3 times. Amazing playing dude.
Hey Robert, nice to see you here! He rules, isn't it 😉?
Ah thanks so much man!
It's a great intro. The guitar lead towards the end kinda reminds me of the outro of "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" by Tears for Fears.
I love that 80s pop sound with a strat playing rhythm. Real nostalgia. Love it.
DUUUDE YES!! That AOR/Jazz Fusion 80s sound is so legendary!! This is my dream sound!! Keep it up man!!
This intro with some The Midnight synths and vocals would be pure bliss!
The Midnight are fuckin awesome
The amount of passion in that intro is unreal! Every note gave me the feels. Love it!
Thanks for always getting to the heart of things! Some of my most important breakthroughs in the last couple years of playing have come from your videos. Really appreciate your hard work.
Easily the best '80s soft rock 'tribute' on UA-cam. And I remember the '80s.
Ah thank you!
As usual, awesome playing, awesome tone, and awesome instructional content - keep it up, Ross, really killer videos
One of your best videos up to now, thanks so much!
Awesome!!!
thank you for this!
Wow. You absolutely nailed that. I was back in the 80’s there. Brilliant
Exactly what I needed! Liked and subscribed.
Great video!!! Thanks a lot!! And very informative too
Thanks! That’s an outstanding breakdown of each part.
That tone and melody sounds like "I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight" by Cutting Crew... I love it!
Please do a whole series like this! So good
Thank you so much for the presets!
You're clearly a talent for all eras, pal.
You weren't even born in the bloody 80's and you still nailed that. 🤣
Oh the groupies you would have had. Ha ha. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Look at you with all your polished video production and everything. You've come a long way.
I'm really happy for you, brother.
We're in lockdown here.
Stay safe. 😉
J.
Thanks so much mate! Hahaha aw I missed out... Ooft stay strong with that. We're finally getting out of it next week
You nailed it. Great parts too. I would listen to this song.

Mate... This is an amazing upload. So glad to see how you've been evolving over the years, both as a musician and a recording artist (in the broader sense of the term).
Love it bro'. Keep it up.
Cheers
Thanks so much Ricardo!
Very cool video Ross! Also a very cool promotion for that interesting plugin.
2:05 my soul ascended to heaven
That was most excellent 😎
Hey Ross that was an incredible video showing a great range of artistic understanding of the sound of the 80s! Your playing was top notch too! I am really interested what plugins did you use for your backing track (bass, synth and drums) to me, those sounds complemented the overall 80s feel really well, thanks!
Such a inspirational lesson! Thx!
Thank you!
Just outstanding. Brilliant disassembly of the soft rock sound. Thank you for making such an enjoyable and informative video.
Thank you!
Very good!!
Thank you!
Amazing playing as always!🎸

Inspired by Died in Your Arms! Awesome job.
Correct! Thank you :)

Absolute class
Thanks Josh!
Sweetest vid yet outa you bro 🤟🎸
Thank you!
Nailed it Ross. Those tones brought back my teens right there (yep i’m that old) Dang i miss the 80’s… almost every song had a guitar solo (and/or a Sax solo) life was good.
Thank you!
Great video! Both the music and the production is really good here, vhs thingy is a nice touch!
Thank you!
Woah. Just woah. This was incredible. So. Damn. Good.
Really good one Ross! Thank you.

That part at 0:38 murdered me and I love it!

Yeah! That archetype tim henson is really amazing when getting 80s sounds.
Lead tone is EPIC. Awesome intro man!

Takes me back to highschool!!! very authentic 80's licks, you captured to exact sound that triggered memories and emotion.
Great Job Ross!!! if there is anyone making an 80's movie, that would be the perfect background music!!!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍🤝
Thanks so much!
Just WOW i love it. 🥰
Thanks Kevin!
Wow. So good 😊
Thanks!
I closed my eyes and just reveled in my childhood. Thx for that! Much appreciated.
13:24 that lick! Great video and advices, i'll definitely try those dyads.
Love it
Thank you
Magical took me right back to 1987 I've been playing that long & I've never really wanted a strat till today, ya wee bugger you 😝
Ha thanks Matthew. Get yourself to guitarguitar...
That Guitar strap is amazing !
I'm a child of the eighties. There was really good guitar work from session players and some good innovation. You captured the crystalline chorusy compressed goodness of that 80's vibe, Ross, great work. Maybe do album of some 80's sounding tracks (hint, hint).
Thanks so much! Haha maybe one day - it's so much fun writing stuff like this.
Hey, Ross! I really love your play dude! I dont speak fluently english (you can observe It) but i get your videos and drink that all! Go ahead , you're in the right way to inspire other musicians.
Thank you Sergio!
you always best:D
THANK YOU SO MUCH TO ALL OF THE GREATEST GUITAR PLAYERS THAT MAKE ME FAMOUS
Had the intro on repeat all day haha
Nothing says this style of production and music like a red Fender Strat. Good choice. The colour is important and adds the sound haha...
Nice. And with a bandaid on! I've tried. Went for the superglue.
Ross to me you are top 3 best teachers and player on youtube ! I love ur style and feel! i'll be purchasing this course thats for sure .. I'm interested in arranging song writing lessons ..Please more of the song writing lessons! You rock bro!
Thanks so much!
He is also my favorite, which are your other two channels if you can recommend? Cheers
@@javiercisternasnajle What are you interested in learning?
Great job with the track and with the tones... you mentioned boys of summer but I also heard time after time by Cindy lauper influence in those double stops. I'm a child of the eighties so this one was fun.. Well done
Ah thank you Andrew!
July 25, 1986 was a Friday, so I probably had a gig that night. Everybody had a chorus pedal in those days!
great lesson! new sub here. 😃
Damn. The intro is superb. Like crazy good. I put my arms out to the side and vibed with it forever. Amazingly tasteful
Ah thank you!
I know mayer has brought it back, but I've been listening to this kind of music since the 80s, that's where my ears and guitar awe live
You’ve really hit upon something here!
I love Ross
Mega👌🏻✌🏻
Oh, so good. You're teaching just gets better and better. No waffle here folks.
Aw thank you!
Mate I've been drilling Stranger Things on Netflix and Last Train Home from Mayer, instantly wanted to learn 80s guitar parts. Then seen this video. Perfectly timed mate
Haha awesome
Loved this track! Nice job. The intro lick sounds like Cutting Crew - I just died in your arms tonight.
Thanks! Yep that was my inspiration
@@RossCampbellGuitarist I can see why you were inspired. The live version has some killer guitar playing and tones in it!
80s has had some amazing guitar man! Great work!
For sure! Thank you as always :)
@@RossCampbellGuitarist Cheers man!
Good Lord, that was beautiful. Jeeeshh!
Thank you!
Which pickups are those? Sounds awesome and great playing!
Oh man the intro. Bring be back to the 80’s now please. Sick tones brother!
Thanks Joshua!
Wtf ! Bravo ! Cheers from 🇮🇹
Thanks dave!
Love the demo song. Even though I wasn't born in the era, this style of music features heavily in music taste and I've always wanted to recreate it.
Thanks Ruben!
Cutting Crew 😁👍🏻
That intro belongs in the Sob Rock album tbh
You rock! Currently working on a scratch track and trying to get an 80s sound. Do you know how to get the bass tone eric clapton uses on bad love?
Guitar can become so technical that sometimes you loose the simplicity and primal feel that moves you … such a perfect example right here … soul stirring
Mate, what brand of plaster did you use there? I want to get that sweet plaster tone :-D
Damn bro... That intro NEEDS to be a song!!
Is the melody inspired from "I just died in your arms"???
Amazing playing btw as Always 💯
Yes! Thank you :)
Man, you are such a tasty player.
What about the pad sound? It's excellent!
🔴 Great! Do you have any "preset" for the Tim plugin, that is the purest sound and close to a "Princeton 65" and a "Twin Reverb"? Also, something that's great for classic jazz? I spent weeks creating my presets, but I lost everything.
So love your playing and style! Another epic video, that plaster sounds awesome 🤣
Haha thank you!
Love the synth sound as well. What plugin did you use?
Thanks! Just some standard patch in a logic Pro x plugin
@@RossCampbellGuitarist thank you! I was playing around with analog lab volume 4 and found another synth sound nightpulses cs-80.
Oh this so close to intro of Jennifer Rush- Destiny. Did you hear that song?
That's my boi
👊
What pickups you using?
