    Awesome advice JY! I am the Head of Sports at a school(Inventure Academy, Bangalore, India), and a lot of the High School students are in such a hurry to increase their lift before everything else is set up, that it pains me to think of the injuries that they will sustain in the future. Very sound advice in setting up a solid foundation first!
    BTW, great channel and wishing you a lot more following. Good to see someone who is teaching & competing.

    5:05 just do a regular standing press, behind the back standing presses are no better, but they are more dangerous.

    I particularly like the admonition to find consistency in practice. I have ahd many throwers that bust it on Mon. and don't get near that intensity till Thursday, no matter what I say. Thanksfor all the tips.

    I'm a bit late on this obviously. Firstly I'm so glad you didn't retire Jordan or go the hammer route LOL! This is the most insightful video I have ever watched covering this topic. I'm 59 getting back into throwing, trained weights for 40 years and this is as relevant to me as it is to people just starting this journey. Love your vids JY seriously such logical content that we need to remember!

    I started throws at 20 this year, so I use the 7,26kg shot, should I train the glide, or put my efforts to the spin? I’m from Costa Rica so the best in here is barely 15m national record, thanks for your time!

    I feel like in your lifting program you need to have some core exercises that you always do. If you have too much variety in your workout your progress is not measurable. So like for example you might always want to include back squats cleans and bench presses in your program. They are the foundation. But then after that you can have some variety in your workout. Of course you will utilize block periodization. You might do a month of hypertrophy training, then followed by some power work like five by five, and then peeking at some CNS work increasing your max. Your exemplary work might mimic your event. For a jav thrower you might do pullovers. A shot putter might get on some cables and work on the power position and hip drive. You might take a 45lb bar and do some twist to work your serratus anterior. But I feel like you need to keep the main things the main things. Squat, deadlift, power clean, incline press, bent over row.

    • @LifeofJY
      @LifeofJY  5 років тому +1

      Yeah that was pretty much my point except that I think you should vary those main lifts too. So you’re still doing essentially a bench press and squat but you can use dumbbells for bench or front squat or leg press and you’re working the same muscle groups just in cycles with them slightly mixed up to keep the progress. Also you don’t need to measure progress day to day if can be cycle to cycle or year to year. So if you don’t do regular bench for a cycle then next time you do it you can measure the progress. There is also other ways to track it such as overhead and underhand shot put throws, standing throws. The main thing is really just getting in the gym and actually lifting so you can do the same thing everyday all through highschool and it will be better than not doing it

    how do you balance the 4 lifting categories you discussed? do you do 2-3 from each category each time you lift?

    • @LifeofJY
      @LifeofJY  5 років тому +1

      Jamie Richards Id do one Olympic lift then usually either upper body or lower from power but can be both if it’s not a hard workout or you can only fit in 2-3 days a week of lifting then just as much core and extra exercises until I’m tired or out of time. I just try to go work my ass off for an hour- hour and a half or until I feel like my body will be in pain if I do more

    So I’m trying to train my 7th grade brother for throwing. Should I not let him throw yet and just so strength training for the first year and then let him do disc after that

    • @LifeofJY
      @LifeofJY  3 роки тому

      It should be the opposite. Throwing is the most important thing to do always. Especially when learning, nothing will help build more specific strength and timing than actually throwing. Strength takes years to develop safely so if he does start lifting now it should be a slow consistent process being careful to not get too worn out or injured.

    I had a question regarding the opposite exercises, how exactly can you tell which muscle is the "opposite" of another. The main thing I want to do is to try and incorperate some of these exercises, but I don't know how to identify which muscles that need to be worked on so I can't work on trying to develop or find exercises for them.

    • @LifeofJY
      @LifeofJY  4 роки тому +1

      dav N I mostly just guess on what’s close to opposite and add that to a cycle. It’s not super important to be exact opposite or anything it’s just a way to keep the body semi balanced and avoid injury

    • @LifeofJY
      @LifeofJY  4 роки тому

      dav N one tip I like is if you know what general area you want to work out then you can look in an anatomy book and look up the muscle names and from there you can find exercises on UA-cam very easily.

    Im 15.. should I lift?

    • @LifeofJY
      @LifeofJY  5 років тому +1

      Paradaisa _HD at 15 if I could do it again I’d crank out a lot of agility exercises, jumps, core, and start to learn proper form for Olympic lifts with light weight to avoid injury then just doing some bench and squats. No rush to be a beast but strengthening every part of your body over the next few years to get you ready for heavier lifting would help you in the long run.

      Life of JY thank you very much! You‘re helping a lot! A short question: Is 40 m as m15 good or bad?

    • @LifeofJY
      @LifeofJY  5 років тому +2

      Paradaisa _HD throwing is an individual sport and good or bad is relative to the athlete. The question is, are you as strong and technically sound as you can be? If the answer is no then the answer to your question is whatever you’re throwing can be improved on so it’s “bad”
