@@nuliknax7407 you could replace the white flour for wholemeal flour and mix in some shredded coconut. Then pre cook them part way before adding them to the syrup. As for the syrup, instead of using flour and water as the thickener id mix in coconut cream and milk with the cocoa. This would add natural sweetness and minimise the need to so much sugar. Ill try and make an upgraded version and let you know how I get on
Sounds really good 👌🏽 let us know how you get on. I’m not yet sold on wholemeal flour but the coconut could make all the difference and same with the changes for the sua (liquid)
Wow yummy I'm going to make this. We make topai with dedicated coconut in the dough and its cooking in like a sugar syrup water. Yummy. But this looks superb!!
This make me miss Samoa I went back 2016 but really didnt feel like home because my mother or father are no longer with us. I really miss the ocean and the food most of all my family. Am going back soon ti visit and make the best out of it.
I made this today following your recipe. Been craving kopai lately and thank you to your recipe, mine turned out great!! Just like how my mom does it back home 😊
@@nuliknax7407 That's what I figured, I mean no disrespect. I did figure there would be a lot more seafood dishes though. Maybe there are they just arent showing up on a search
adam burdt I think these dishes actually do exist, but the generation who holds all that knowledge haven’t transferred it across into cyberspace. Or they transfer it to their loved ones who haven’t thought to create bootleg island food channels. Even dishes like this one here, real basic but you’d be surprised how many of us (particularly first generation Samoans who were raised on it) dont or didn’t know how to make it. I think a lot of these basic dishes - are more nostalgic value ( read: it’s the memories we attach to the dish that we enjoy) rather than it actually being about making an epic dish. Or who knows, there are those of us who actually love kopai cos we hardly ever get / eat it.
Jamac007 most definitely! The Koko Samoa dissolves like ordinary cocoa, so maybe take 3-4 tablespoons of cocoa and dissolve it in the pot like you would the Koko 😊
@@nuliknax7407 I left lt the ulo on for too long coz I struggled makin the dough, but anyways it was my first time. But anyways Thanks 4 sharing *How to make Kopai* ♥️
Don’t give up just cos the first round didn’t turn out - just make sure the water in the Ulo with the koko doesn’t evaporate (keep topping it up with water) while you’re sorting the puka next time 😊👍🏽

Thank you! Simple but so yummy.
Negative Nutrients But Wholesome Flavour. How we roll 😂
ACE 21 😂😂😂 you know it lol 🤪
I reckon you could make a wholesome version of this. But it wouldn't have the same soul
Not sure how tho.. it wouldn’t be the same if the puka/doughballs weren’t made of flour which is the worst culprit here (aside from the sugar)

That’s great, making the best of it next time round. Can understand that it wouldn’t have felt the same without your parents in 2016 🌹
I tried this and the dumplings were too wet so now I see how to do it. Thank you!!
Nakamizo Nakano you’re welcome 😊👌🏽
Is it the same ingredients and measurements if we do it without Koko Samoa?
Great video

Yes that’s one thing that’s missing! ‘Kai lava 🥳😄
When do you chuck it in? Towards the end?
What flour do you used
PJ Solitua just standard flour.
Plain flour or?
PJ Solitua yeah plain. Standard flour is plain flour
All polynesian food is either sweet or some type of dough in sauce that also is usually sweet
adam burdt I guess we had to work with what we had. Flour. Raw cocoa. Sugar.

Loyal2dasoil Medical Grow oh really, where abouts are you?
Nuli Knax Kauai
Loyal2dasoil Medical Grow would it get through customs over there if I sent you some?
Nuli Knax I'm not sure...it should if there's no seed's...and thanks for the thought
If you don't have koko samoa can you use Cocoa Powder?

Jamac007 you’re welcome 👌🏽😊 you did all the work man!
