I'm playing my space vampire empire for the first time. Void Dwellers that think the rest of the galaxy tastes good. But I haven't played this kinda empire in a long while. I have no idea how to go out and steal food... er... pops for my empire. I need guides.
I also didn't think I needed a guide, but I actually learned something after 1,5k hours playing this game: there is a Quick Start button! How did I not notice that before?! Crafting empires is one of my favourite things to do, so I would never click it anyway, but more than that I seem to have completely blocked it out of my field of vision somehow. Like I'm selectively blind or something. I was honestly startled and confused when I saw Montu click it. Felt a bit like I was losing my mind, or like Montu was gaslighting me. I needed to check if that button is actually there XD
I was brought to stellaris as a long-time civilization player looking for a game that’s a bit more complex. As a side note, I’d love to get a companion video to this for people who have been playing for a while but are still bad, with things like early game tips, timing for when to build up fleets, what techs are important to target etc.
Did you know?: There is a relic labelled "A message in a bottle" that has the entire Stellaris Sea Shanty with additional lyrics that they couldn't put in the Aquatics trailer. Any chance you can feature this masterpiece of an Easter egg?
A friend of mine found them as lithoids in a mp game Imagine space faring rock people chanting sea shanties How would that sound to us as a regular biological species?
I was complaining to my stellaris playing friend about how impenetrable this game is on Tuesday, he's a subscriber to your channel and sent me this, excellent timing
I love the new update. (the 3.4.3 patch that came out today) Yesterday getting a scolarioum was hard and getting a prospectorium was almost impossible. Today I just kindly asked the neighbor empire for 15% of their basic income and they said yes. It's great.
I started playing and loving Civ6 a few years ago, and when I looked for other 4x games to play, stellaris popped up. It's a very different game, that's why both are cool. You said you wanna do a guide on DLC stuff , that's cool, a lot of systems in the DLC. What I haven't had yet are ideas for general strategy, long term, and how to win when you're not going for Dominance over the whole Galaxy - maybe it really just is keeping up with economy and teching a lot, but I have the feeling that can't be it. If I even win my games I barely do so on the easiest difficulty.
About 4 years ago, I was playing Stellaris first time before the Mega Cop was released. I didn't know the game started with paused, so I can not move my ship. Then I abandoned the game until Nemesis.

A nice little refresher. The game changes with each update, so features one had forgotten about may suddenly become very relevant. So even though I've been playing for a good while, I still appreciate videos like this. As for what got me into Stellaris... Scott Manly has a couple of Stellaris LP's on his channel, and it snowballed from there. I used to be an avid Spore player, and Stellaris is everything I wish Spore Space Stage was.
When I started playing I was so confused about how to navigate the game, especially since I haven't played any 4x game before. This should be a good video for my brother.
Watched the video to support the guide for newcomers. While watching I always got reminded how different the game was back at release and why I always return to it for another session. I love how it changed over the years, even if you sometimes had to relearn certain changed or added mechanics, most of the time it was completly worth it. Looking forward to any further evolution. Intern politics, spacebattle rework, I'm looking at you. ^^
I think you forgot to mention changing setting for showing colony designation icons. Unless they changed the default setting. For people reading this, if your icon next to the planet name on the right side shows you the planet type (continental, tundra etc) and not Empire Capital (or other designations) then click on the cog on the top right of the outliner and check the bottom setting.
It’s also very useful to tick the box in the lower right corner to un-clutter the galaxy UI. In particular, exploited resources change from green to invisible, and Anomalies become invisible unless you have a Science Ship selected. If you want to see everything temporarily, just hold down the Alt key.

Well done! I'm waiting for the next episode. Stellaris is a really addictive and multi-option game, a must for a sci-fi fan. I'm waiting for an episode on creating and managing sectors - I don't understand the resource allocation system and when / how to best create them. An episode on resettlement and managing more populations would also be valuable.
A great Guide for friends of mine i was looking for and yet not capable to explain this Monster of a game in a very informative, short, logical and understandable way like you did. I thank you so much, maybe i can get my friends to try it again! Greetings from germany ✌️
I started playing few days back and I got hooked in since day one. Searched videos for basic and more advanced stuff while reading the wiki at the same time. If this video was published a week earlier it would have saved me a lot of time.
Thank you kindly for this informative and concise video. To have a guide through such a seemingly broad and complex system is absolutely delightful. I just started my journey and love the game already. Have a fantastic day everyone, and thank you again for the vid!
Bounced off Stellaris a few years ago, bought some dlc on sale recently and thought I’d give it another try. Loving it so far and guides like this REALLY help. A deep dive into planetary/economy management for 3.4 would also be useful. Thanks
Been playing for awhile seen all the tutorials but never seen this channel and wanted a fresh perspective. I also love the game so I always watch stellaris content.
As someone who also creates tutorial playthroughs for strategy games, I am well aware how astoundingly difficult it is compared to how easy it looks. You sir deserve a gold medal for the quality content you consistently pump out for this game. Your scripting and editing are top notch and very helpful for the community. Just felt the need this morning to give a nod to someone out there killing it for the rest of us every day. Cheers mate!
Thanks for that quick overview. Most videos are just reading the description of the different buttons/items/options/etc.... I can read by myself.... damn!
Well since you were so kind as to ask, Montu, I must say the reason I started played Stellaris was because my friend had been playing it religiously over the course of a month and it drew my attention. As soon as I got into it I was HOOKED. Strategy games are right up my alley and anything that allows me to personalize my character/faction is exactly what I love as well. I've never played a game with more roleplay potential and I expect to play this game until... a very long time!
I'm loving these guides of yours. They're a real help! My first playthrough ended up being a bust because I wound up being spawned next to a fallen empire that quickly kicked my butt. I tossed them out on my second game and am doing much better so far. I even have a scientist who's now immortal thanks to an event I ran into! She's now my head of science.
You wanna know why I like Stellaris, Montu? It's easy. It's The Sims mixed with real-time strategy. I've never played even a single campaign with victory turned on, as I get the most fun out of watching the galaxy - not even my own Empire, but my neighbors as well, friend _or_ foe - develop while I snowball into oblivion. Plus, there's no other game where I can really play as a relatively accurate simulacrum of the Borg Collective. (I find Driven Assimilators to be the most fun Empire types, especially with the capacity for late-game Pop snowballing via mass assimilation) Second only to my DAs is Megacorps. I've never _not_ had fun as a Megacorp, especially since the first one I made (an Avian race that just wanted to sell people healthy, delicious eggs that I called the Mahard Egg Farm after an egg-farming company that used to be pretty big in the US) wound up with a Trade Value Energy output equivalent to 7-8 Dyson Spheres per month. And my second Megacorp (the Salesbeetles of the Empire known as the Bugs of Sale, who'd hock _anything_ for the right price) wound up at _fifteen_ Dyson Spheres per month. I couldn't spend my money fast enough, I _deliberately_ went triple over my Starbase Cap _just_ to increase maintenance costs so I'd have a money sink. I like Stellaris because I enjoy breaking it in increasingly hilarious ways.
Sooooo... I recently stumbled over your channel and i have to admit you lit the fire for stellaris again. Because, and im very ashamed, i have mostly let everything run by itself up until now lol. 400 hours and i never knew for example that there is a weapon meta, or basically tier list for every single thing in this game. Though i never play multiplayer. I would just get sealclubbed i think, but again since discovering this channel i have started anew, doing everything manually, and the only question is: What kind of priority do all these mechanics have? Is it Economy > Planets > Ships > Research? Anyway great video, keep up the good work
Watched the whole thing to see if there was anything new I could learn and I can say that there was at least 1 thing that can make my life a little easier which is not manually building each colony ship as I usually do. Thanks for the video
True. I had a good 100 hours in this game when I learned through a Montu video that the trait "strong" doesn't effect my fleets. Basicly all the traits and civics I used in the first 100 hours were trash
I came to this video to discover some starting strategies that would help me improve the quality of my mid game. Been away awhile and it's wildly different than when I first started like Unity being used to buy leaders and edicts and such. Just feeling stuck and I'm just edible chattel for all the AI xenos I come across. Just overall I am looking how to ramp up my productions without sacrificing research and unity. Love your content. I was literally looking for a stellaris video about this. I just got all of the big expansions and some species pack. I use to play it a lot, but stop due to not having most of the content. And with leaders now using unity to recruit instead of energy, I'm basically a noob again. Thank you for making this vid.
Just got this game, fumbled about 10-15 hours into my first save, then bought the DLC. Started a new save, and learned a whole bunch of stuff you covered in this video the hard way, lol. I already LOVE this game for so many reasons, but damn its like drinking from a firehose.
Over 1500 hours in this game. But still watching this. Get some ideas to shake up my routine play. Edit: I may have overestimated my need. Thorough for any new players though.
I played Stellaris when it was brand new but haven't played in years. The game was always very good but I'm surprised at the depth the game has to offer now. There is a LOT to wrap your head around. As a returning player I'd like to thank you for the excellent guides. Also, "There are so many ways to play the game it would be very hard to choose something wrong..." Hold my beer.
Please please please for the love of MontUwU, do a video on specializing planets for specific types of resource production and how to manage planets in the early game vs the mid/late game.
I was introduced to Stellaris after wanting to play a strategy's game with my girlfriend and trying to find such a game we'd find mutually enjoyable. Sci-fi space themes (especially of the political and exploration veins) are one of, in not my favourite genre of any media. It's quickly become my favourite game to play and I deeply appreciate guides like this. Even if I figured out most of the mechanics myself through trial and error-- Brushing up never hurts, and your other content is lovely for listening to while playing the game.
A friend got me into stellaris by telling me about all the cool interactions he had with various alien races and space dragons. I came to this video because I really need someone to clarify just what the heck I should actually be doing in the early game XD So thank you for helping us newbies!
I recently started playing Stellaris as TW:warhammer 3 released with a few hiccups and I'm waiting a bit for them to get resolved. Loving the game so far
I might need to try and pick up this game again. This was my go-to game back in the day, then with the MegaCorp DLC (I think?) the core game mechanics were radically changed, and unfortunately I'm one of those people that really doesn't like things I'm used to changing because it required a relearning how to play. As a result I haven't touched the game since. Maybe enough time has passed that I forgot how to do stuff, so relearning a new system will be less painful.
an indepth ship designer tutorial would be neat, because I never know what weapons to put on my ships or if I should make multiple ship classes with different weapons.
A good understanding of sci-fi tropes will also help when playing. It's brilliant when you get one of those "Oh yeah!" moments. The funniest is when one of your scientists discovers a "towel" 😂😂
Why'd I come to Stellaris? I can't convince enough of my friends to play Twilight Imperium lol. Why this video? Because this game is crazy deep. Awesome video, man!
Montu i think if you click shift+right click it's auto survey and auto construction build, kind of pointless with the coming update now. Edit : It's actually shift+ left click after you select survey/construction, been a while since i played.
Ok this was a nice compact guide. Now i am excited to start a new game :D. Also some cut scenes u showed like planet exploding ..are those in game ? or they just trailer shots ?
How I got into Stellaris: I like CK, I like other space 4x games, it seemed a reasonable bet I'd enjoy this too. Question though: how much and of what should I be using my very beginning starting resources to get? Should I be getting a tonne of science ships or is just one fine? Should I have colony ships rolling off the production line from the word 'go' or wait until I've actually surveyed habitable worlds I want? Should I be dropping starbases everywhere around me at first, or very picky where I build them? And if I'm supposed to be very picky, where is it better to drop them first if I have to choose between systems that are chokepoints but with no habitable worlds vs low-positional-value-but-has-high-habitability-planet systems?
THANK you! i've been wondering of a way to help get my friend to know more about this game so he's not clueless by the time i get my new computer and play with him. just gotta hope he watches the whole thing rather than skimming or ignoring stuff haha
It was actually the hivemind trait. I wanted a hivemind race of butterflies spreading accross the galaxy that is almost the exact opposite of the Devouring swarm.
idk why i watched it, ive been playing since release xd i can confirm this is very informative for a person who wants to start their stellaris adventure
Finally, a stellaris video geared to someone of my caliber.

18:53 "What brought you to stellaris ?" 8€ on steam.
I recently started playing Stellaris as TW:warhammer 3 released with a few hiccups and I'm waiting a bit for them to get resolved.
Loving the game so far
This is just quality content. Very well done.
Montu: saying he's not going to repeat himself but to rewind to force him to repeat himself
Me: "So one plus one equals zero in this case? Got it"
Amazing video :)
Looking at the title, I don't feel dignified for coming to watch this video.
Jk, thanks, Montu!
Thank you. This helped a yon and now I've got the hang of it
Great Video as Always :)
I would enjoy a new Origin and one precursor Tierlist. I know you cant chouse your precursor but it would be intressting.
With 1,100 hours in Stellaris - I believe I'm finally ready for this video
Thanks!
I hope the video helped! Thanks so much for your support!
Thank you I don't need this but most of my friends do
I have 16800 hours in the game. I’m pretty bad at it. Thank you so much for this 👍👍👍👍
My dad used to play it and told me, a space science nerd about it and guess what happened
Despite having over 1000 hours in this game. I still watch these videos because 90% of the time, I have no idea what I'm doing
I'm really happy Montuwu is a thing now and you accepted it :D
Brings me back to when I started Stellaris. When you had 3 ways to travel and there was no DLC.
I"ve been playing for years, always loved Master of Orion and this is I think the best descendant :)
Definitely sending this to my noob friends.
Edit: So glad you named Earth Bob. It is the true name
I'm new to Sollaris and this video helped immensely. I can't believe how useless the tutorial is in this game. Thank you, Montu!
THANK you! i've been wondering of a way to help get my friend to know more about this game so he's not clueless by the time i get my new computer and play with him. just gotta hope he watches the whole thing rather than skimming or ignoring stuff haha
Well, after 150 hours and ~40 tutorials I can finally say that tutorials like these are finally redundant, thx Montu
I picked this game up 2 days ago.I love starcraft2, so I decided to give it a shot. At first glance it all fells overwhelming.
I usually play on Admiral or GA difficulty and I still enjoyed the video
It was actually the hivemind trait. I wanted a hivemind race of butterflies spreading accross the galaxy that is almost the exact opposite of the Devouring swarm.
i started stellaris coz i saw many videos explaining the story or some levianthans and i thought it was insanely cool!
Great guide mate I love it! Will there be a complete idiots guide to the midgame (combat, sector automation, diplomacy, subterfuge etc.)? :)
idk why i watched it, ive been playing since release xd i can confirm this is very informative for a person who wants to start their stellaris adventure
the changes to the ai have forced me to rapidly change my ideas about what i can get away with.
best stellaris so far and not too detail for new player!
