    Julian, thank you for taking the time to share these sessions and walk through the details with Off Axis! This made it much easier to visualize the workflow to fine tune the vocal sound.
    Over the last few months, I've been working with a manufacturer to design a custom vocal booth. I used the techniques shared in the "Optimize Your Vocal Booth with Sphere" blog + some online resources. It lead me to finding my room modes, adding a few custom panels, moving the mic, and using the Off Axis features... HUGE improvement to my vocals! WOW! It did what mixing plugins couldn't do after recording.
    Thank you guys for making an amazing product AND teaching us how to incorporate it into our workflow. These webinars are truly valuable and every artist I've worked with since comments how they LOVE the mic and sound we are getting. This is redefining the new standard for vocal production, like UAD did years ago. Thank you!!

      Thank you so much for this really awesome feedback. We truly appreciate it and it's extremely gratifying for the team. If you haven't already done so, please leave a review with the dealer you bought the mic from so it can help others make their decision. - Julian

    Hi Julian! Great video! I'm just wondering if there was a particular reason to have the vocalist sing into the back of the microphone for the "Mama" session?

    • @Townsendlabs
      @Townsendlabs  4 роки тому +2

      Great question! The main reason is because it looks better and puts the Townsend Labs logo in the hot 😎 Since the two capsules are so tightly matched and you can quickly swapped the channels in the plug-in, it seemed like neat thing to do. In fact, it was suggested by the camera operator. - Julian

    I've tweaked my sound a lot with the amazing L22, but still I have so many questions!
    29:58 So the off/on distance control should be set to the lowest/highest distance of background/foreground sources? I assumed that it was about the average distance of either, but noticed that a slightly higher on distance resulted in a tighter focussing of my voice in the polar diagram and a nicer, warmer sound. I assumed the latter was due to the proximity effect only, but if it's due to a better separation of resonance from the neck and chest and room reflections, that would justify my choice.
    46:16 I guess that's why my raw vocals sound somehow better with the cardoid pattern than with the hypercardoid pattern. It sounds slightly more defined and powerful. On the other hand, room reflections could also contribute to that impression, which is maybe suboptimal, because the room acoustics is not perfect and my voice is gotta stand out from distorted guitars and heavy drums. The cardoid pattern sounds better right away, but since the hypercardoid contains less bad delay and reverb, I wonder if it would allow to achieve a better final result with EQ and good delay and reverb. What do you think?
    1:20:32 Are the proximity controls equivalent to an EQ or do they also have an effect that cannot be recreated via EQ later on? Maybe they result in a clearer sound by not boosting the room sound?
    1:28:58 And finally, I thought the polar pattern control on the top is inactivewhen offaxis correction is activated, as the polar pattern control on the bottom determines what you and see in the diagram. Now I'm confused what the upper pattern control does as opposed to the lower one. Does the upper control just control the magnitude of the proximity effect, while the lower control only affects the polar pattern when off-axis correction is on?

    Hi, I am new to recording vocals, I have a question: if I have Apollo twin already, should I invest a dual channel preamp like bae 1073 to pair up with Townsend, or put money on getting some good analog compressors instead? I have a tight budget...Btw, love all of your videos!

    • @Townsendlabs
      @Townsendlabs  3 роки тому

      Hey, thanks for the kind words! I would probably start with a great two-channel preamp like the BAE 1073 you mentioned. For compression, you'd definitely need a pair that can be stereo-linked. Depending on the design, it's not super trivial to maintain consistent gain across both channels, which is critical for accurate modeling. - Julian

    Hello, I see on the 180 plug in, there is a mix knob in which my case it says pan, so if I want to blend to mic sounds, ie guitar cabinet it pans them instead of mix them, how can I see that mix knob? Thanks for this video

    • @Townsendlabs
      @Townsendlabs  4 роки тому

      Great question. There are two types of Sphere plug-ins: The regular (mono) Sphere plug-in and the Sphere 180 plug-in. Here, we're using the former but in dual mode. In dual mode of the regular plug-in (shown here) you have two virtual mics that you can blend together to create a hybrid, but mono, sound. In the Sphere 180 plug-in you have two virtual mics that are panned left and right. You can still sum them to mono (using the width control), of course. So going by what you're describing, I suggest switching to the regular Sphere plug-in and engaging dual mode (bottom right of the plug-in). Does that make sense?

    Unfortunately for me this is tough to watch with the demonstration using a microscopic cursor. What is so difficult in making the cursor much larger?

    • @Townsendlabs
      @Townsendlabs  4 роки тому

      It's not difficult, I guess, but I'm having a hard time understanding how the cursor size is that important. Most of the demo involved tweaking some plug-in controls or bringing plug-ins up on the screen. Without those elements (controls, GUIs,) scaling along or having other types of highlights, I feel like a much bigger cursor doesn't really accomplish anything. What sort of screen size are you watching on? - Julian

      @@Townsendlabs Hi Julian, you're a good guy and you deserve a reply! I did watch this video and it was tough on me. I am watching you on a 27 inch iMAC. Before I continue, let me preface my reply by saying I have made my living for 45 years teaching music to students. What I've learned is that you always want to have empathy for the student. You NEVER make the learning process annoying, frustrating, and aggravating.
      Hopefully you want to make the learning experience better and better for students who are watching your video tutorials. Regarding the small cursor size, teachers must understand it is easy for you as the teacher to move the cursor because your eyeballs are not following the cursor as you move it. However from the student's perspective, our eyeballs are strained attempting to follow it... and it becomes annoying, frustrating, and aggravating. NOTE: Most students who find the teaching to be annoying, frustrating, and aggravating WILL not respond. They will just move on.
      HERE’S WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN TO IMPROVE THE TEACHING FROM A STUDENT"S PERSPECTIVE:
      A) The cursor size needs to be 20 times larger around the size of a nickel or larger.
      B) During instruction, the teacher deliberately moves the cursor, without fast circles and jagged moving, make smooth movements, circle once or just gently point to the intended area on the screen.
      Cursor size on a MAC: Go to System Preferences - Accessibility - Display - Change Cursor Size to Large
      Then during instruction, deliberately move the cursor, without fast circles and jagged moving, make smooth movements, circle once or just gently point to the intended area. This is the professional way to do it and you'll look professional. Julian, if the cursor size is where it was in your video, you will need to make fast circles so the students can see what you are talking about and for most it is annoying, frustrating, and aggravating. I hope this helps!
