Spontaneous Landing at JFK Airport in Mooney M20J

- I was flying along the south shore (Coney Island & Rockaway) in my Mooney M20J 201 and got in touch with Kennedy Tower. They did something they pretty much never do, they offered me to transition at 1000ft rather than 500. Getting closer to the airport, I realized it is not busy. So unusual for John F Kennedy International airport! No arrivals and nobody short of the runway for departures, so I decided to request a low approach. Tower said the only thing they could let me do is a full-stop taxi-back. Things have been getting busier here lately. Newark was a continuous conga line. So, I realized this might be the last chance for this, so I went for it. Flew a left hand pattern to land on 31L, the longest runway on the east coast! By the time I was on final, there were several jets holding for my arrival. What an incredible experience.
Today, I learned of the passing of Bob Belville on the same day as my flight. So I dedicate this video to his memory. What a great guy.
I Like the 'Rat Rod' look with the paintwork. It's faded not since you bought the aircraft eh? Is the nose cone a different shape from the previous one? always enjoy your videos buddy. hope you are all safe and well over there
it was still during covid so there would be less demand for flights? idk thats just my guess . Feel free to correct me.
Hey Mike! Nice landing! Can you recommend CFI who is very experienced in Mooney? Preferably out of Linden. Thanks
Not sure if Evan is still flying out of Linden. Byron out of KGAI taught some Mooney Proficiency courses and knows his stuff.
Until I saw this video I had no idea that 31L had such a long displaced threshold. Great job holding it off and putting her down on the numbers.
They need it for launching heavily loaded transpacific jumbo jets.
how much were the landing fees ? :)
Haven't seen any yet
Yeah, that's pretty awesome. Love your videos and I have just entered into an agreement to buy a 1978 M20J myself. VH-NWF is a beautiful aeroplane with loads of engine and prop hours remaining, IFR and a recent paint job. Looking forward to taking delivery real soon.
Wow! JFK. What an experience! Right on the numbers is right. Thought for sure you'd be short.
Wow. That's pretty much a once in a lifetime opportunity!
Cool Mike. Painting your plane in segments?
Nice Mike. Any future plans for trips this year? Any plans or upgrades for the M20?
Not really. It's been a crazy year. I'm happy I can get out and poke holes in the sky at all. We'll see where things go.
Nice touch remembering Bob.
Right on numbers!
Nicely done. Great landing
Thanks.
