M1 converted G4 iMac fully functional

- Replaced the internals of a 2003 iMac with an M1 Mac mini logic board. All ports are functional or replaced with with more modern ones. Optical drive is also functional, and was by far the hardest part to fit into the dome.
See this post for full build details. forums.macrumors.com/threads/...

I like to imagine that in some parallel universe there’s a version of Apple that likes to make anniversary editions of more products like this, but with all their modern enhancements like sound quality, display quality, etc.
That would be awesome to have a retro line up with some of their iconic designs from the past. That’s exactly why I did this.
Yeah. I want something like eMac or G3
that would be awesome, but apple is apple.
I have made an iMac G3 C2D Hackintosh build, but it‘s already as outdated as the original
they have the old iPad and iPhone se with new modern processors, but unfortunately they must've shut down the factories that actually made these old Mac designs. Would be cool to see them revive it though
FINALLY SOMEONE WHO ACTUALLY DOESN'T TURN THE DISK DRIVE INTO SOMETHING FOR LOOKS
Thanks to how small the Mac mini is and the new processor arch not really needing serious cooling, there's a lot of possibilities one can do with a M1 Mac mini like you did :)
yeah its tiny, smaller than the original HDD from the G4 iMac. take a look at the build in the description to see them side by side. but actually cooling is still fine, as I've positioned the fan right next to the vents on the iMac. even with heavy gaming for hours, it doesn't slow down and just gets a little warm on the outside.
Someone did a G4 Cube version of this!
A 27" HD monitor with a swivel stand like that would be awesome.
Definitely would be. A lot more custom work needed to make the mount and casing though. My goal with this one was to make it look unmodified from the outside.
its "17"
@@connorlearmonth665 i would argue you also need a beefier swivel stand for a bigger screen
@@NanescuRadu1 there are screws on the stand of the G4 to allow you to adjust how "heavy" the tension is
@@porcupinepunch6893 oh good to know … so the mod won’t be so hard if you want maybe mount a vesa adapter and 3d print a cover for it or something similar … and if you use a white monitor you can actually make it pretty similar to the design … the only thing you have to do is reposition the hdmi/usb-c ports inwards and route the cable trough the monitor from the center … this might be the hardest part of mod for it
I am confident to say this is the better designed computer apple has ever made, would love to see an official "remake". Nice job man, it looks fantastic.
Thanks man. This is definitely one of the coolest iMacs they’ve ever made. They’ve basically had the same overall design now since the g5 iMac, only getting thinner over time
I mean honestly a modern version would just be an iPad on a zero G stand. No need for that large base considering how small the necessary components and the thermal management can be nowadays.
@@lawnmowerdude Yeah, judging by the pratical side is a pointless model nowadays, but it would be cool af
@@pedrofish2099 the base would be necessary if they put the new mac studio in this thing. It would be pretty powerful. I do agree this iMac is very cool looking. I got a good deal on a used one years ago just to look at because they are so cool looking.
+1
I dont understand why they would ever ditch this style, so useful and good
Yeah I would love to see a modern take on it.
The display arm was over-complicated and couldn't handle the weight of the display sizes customers demand these days.
If they put a computer inside the pro display xdr that would essentially be a modern take
@@Gnenguin so...pretty much an imac xD
@@tristanbrady8663 nah iMac screens don't swivel in a nice way!
Imagine if you could find a better display that fits in that ones spot that has a higher resolution, it would be perfect!
It's a 17" display with 900 pixels. The full HD panels with the same ratio are 1920X1200 and you don't really see higher resolutions. Unless you were having an issue with the old panel it probably wouldn't be worth it for a 33% increase in pixel count.
This man’s a legend for making the Mac mini an All-in-one.
Such a cool design, and such a shame it was so short-lived
The white dragon egg looking thing at the bottom looks bad tho 😦
There’s a reason it was short lived.
It would be awesome if they brought the G4 design back with M1 internals. The overheating issues should now be resolved.
It would be. I would buy one immediately.
Cool! You know what would be even cooler? Showing us how you did it.
Check the description!
@@connorlearmonth665 the post is cool but a video about it would be better if you ever get the time to make one i bet tons of people would watch
@@JaredConnell if I ever do another one I’ll keep that in mind!
I had the idea of doing this a couple of months ago, but I’m not the most knowledgable when it comes to tinkering with electronics, so I was scared to ruin a new m1 mac mini and g4! So cool to see yours😃
Thanks! I definitely had a few moments where I was worried about breaking something, but luckily it all worked out in the end lol
Finally the G4 cube is possible without overheating...
A guy already did it. Google around, its great.
@@DanaTheInsane looks like Apple decided to go and stick 4 M1 chips in a cube.... and give it ventilation.
The m1 chip is bringing back to life a lot of legacy mac tech.
That’s awesome. This was my favorite iMac design and it’s cool you were able to bring new life to the chassis. I wish I had that skill.
That's the coolest thing I've seen this year!
Don't think anything could beat this so far...
You earned my respect, it must of been a detailed & a time consuming project but worth in the end, keep up the good work 🔥👑
that is one of the most brilliant creations i’ve ever seen
Dude! That's a pretty nice job! Congrats!
love seeing the various ways people are using the m1 mac mini to make mods
The best converted version I have seen so far. Great job, especially as the disk drive is still operating. Wonderful. The style could be exactly the same. Only a small adjustment in better display and sound quality and I would instantly buy this for everyday work in my office. What a beautiful design.
This is the coolest thing I've seen this year, how could anything else top this haha
Nice work. With the power of an newer Mac, and the lovely design of an older and iconic iMac G4
This is such a nice build. Great choices and great work. Much respect
I want the fish tank M1. They had arguably the best onboard speakers ever in a Mac. Best looking machine too!
Nicely done! I put an M1 mini in a 2010 27” iMac with a 4K display panel, 720p iSight camera and a usb amp running the internal speakers.
Now, that I would like to see. 2010 27" was perfect in my mind.
very awesome, I love how these tiny M1 Mini boards let us do all kinds of cool projects with them
The G4 iMac still looks good!
nice -good work. old mac deserve to live again
0:30 loved how you put the Mac Mini chassis next to the Monsters, Inc. DVD, like a very old unused thing lol
just finish reading your built, it was fun for reader but iam sure it was not easy for you to built. and yet you finished. amazing upgrade 👍🏼.
I miss CD drives and that sound it made when it opened and closed.
A video about the whole process would’ve been really nice
The link in the description shows the build details
This video deserves a million views. This mod is absolutely insane. Great job!
This is awesome, Great on you man!
Hats off for fantastic work! You earned my subscribe!
I can't believe you've done this.
Very cool, nice work! Would love to see the insides and more detail on how this is set up!
Thanks! Check out the link in the description for the build thread
@@connorlearmonth665 DOH-didn’t see that, thank you!
That dvd part just puts icing on the cake. I wish they kept that feature somehow 😭
I used to have the 17 inch widescreen version. It was my favourite Mac ever.
Very very cool.
Thanks
man woke up and decided to be a legend
Beautiful job, mate!
A labor of love. And taste.
This form factor was the best one, I still miss it.
Damn, this is spot on! The M1 Mac Mini just has so much potential for mods. :)
Top job right there and thanks for sharing with the masses :)
Love this idea! hmmm considering of making this a project myself.
GREAT build!
This is actually sick 👍
This still looks like the future.
That is so cool! I need to get my dad's old G4 and start modding 😂
Yay now that iMac isn't obsolete anymore
I haven’t used optical drive for such a long time. Good old days
Amazing. Jobse's lamp is the most beautiful apple PC ever. New hardware in really wonderful case.
Thanks! this is definitely one of the coolest things they've ever made
@@connorlearmonth665 I think you'll make more excellent projects even better than this one
As a PC guy I love these types of Fun builds.
i liked the design of this imac, but didnt like the performance, and you just made my dreams come true, this is amazing
This is insanely great!
Good sir you have just earned a subscriber well done mate 😎
You deserve one million views for this, also do a narration vid on how you did it
This is brilliant
Thanks so much. I’m not so great at narrating, but I did post the build thread in the description if you’re interested
The M1 SOC probably never got cozy with a disk drive before in its life
You take me on a trip to early 2000 at my university days when study graphic design this machine was top notch and hard to get here in mexico apple didnt have official presence and evrrything was imported by third partys in that days
Love your works! Kudos!!!
holy shit this is so cool! good work!
Amazing! So beautiful! Great work absolutely
Smartly Done. Good Job.
Awesome, I want one. Well done!
Another unique version of Mac that I love is that Crystal clear, Rated R! (In and out clear) "Cube".
Next, you should convert one of those with a matching monitor, keyboard, speaker etc.
This is really cool. Great job 😄
This would be my daily driver 100%, great job!
Thanks! This is now main daily driver
leaving this here for when I come back in a week and this vids blown up
Great work!
OMG! This is awesome! I have one of these and will save this video to attempt the same with my G4 iMac. I always loved this machine and could simply not bring myself to get rid of it.
Hope it goes well for your build!
I love it!
I have a 15" one, fully functional, but the display cable is cut and I couldn't find a replacement. I wanted to convert it into a PC or a monitor a while ago.
Amazing job. Best looking iMac ever made. Best looking computer ever made**
Congratulations !! Amazing work !! This is the spirity of the trully computer user like the golden years. Who needs Apple to remake anniversary edition ?
bro this is amazing
my heart is smiling with joy. this is a true revolution of our time.
Nostalgia + Power
this retro fitting is amazing
Thanks
@@connorlearmonth665 your welcome
Oh wow! that is super cool!
Beautifully done dude. Would love to have a reason to make one, myself.
That looks pretty cool.
Would love to see a how-to on this, I just came into possession of a 20” G4 (1 week to the DAY after the 20th anniversary of the G4 launch announcement) and would love to get it modded!
Build thread in the description. Everything explained there!
Sweet! Nice Work!
wow, i have one of these at home, i would love to see a full walk through of how you got this to work please, maybe even a step by step series … so that i could do this too.
great job!
I spotted the link to the project guide on Mac Rumour and just read through it, not sure i am brave enough/knowledgeable enough to do this myself …
@@MrBalloonatic if you have basic soldering skills and a general understanding of how everything works in the guide, you should be able to do it with some time and patience
This and make the display touchscreen, you get my dream computer.
I like to imagine this is exactly how HomePad will look like
I must say I love this mods so much, and wonder how to get one for myself.
I would LOVE a video guide on how to do this myself because I thought of this idea yesterday and come to show you've done it yourself! Very impressive, if anyone has a video link on how to do this project it'd be a greatly appreciated!
That's proper awesome not going to lie
My jaw is literally dropping!!! This is amazing!!!
Thanks!
This is so rad!
I have "the lamp" G4, I will definately do the same thing, thanks.
Wow I bet that it took a lot of work! Especially with the dvd drive!
Keep moding stuff.
Yeah seriously. I was like nice work on all the ports but was blown away with the DVD drive.
Thanks guys, the dvd drive took up like 70% of the space, so had to do some cutting and modding on the inside to make it fit properly. Build thread is in the description if you want to see the details
Amazing project and result. Thanks for sharing. Now all we need is to nick a 16" retina replacement display for a MacBook Pro and stuff it into the acrylic display :)
i would actually buy an imac right now if it was like this
The best iMac design of all time. Better yet, the best computer design of all time!!! I want to buy one just to have it again like I did in the 2000’s!
This. Is. Awesome. I would like to see my Cube revamped like that.
thanks! I think the cube has been done as well by others
super impressive, holy crap
so cool, good job
