somehow youtube elected to play this at 360p on my gigabit internet connection and I genuinely mistook that as the intended effect and thought you wanted to do it to give it that early 2000s vibe LOL.
Really sick! I'd happily use this for my Mac Mini... hmmm, ideas ideas. Good video. I am disappointed you didn't cover how you got the display connected, that was the only obvious hangup.
adc is dvi with a 25v power rail in it, apple made an adapter to power it and give you a dvi connection, he probably has one of those, one other hangup though would be the lack of ability to change display settings because it also has usb going to it through the adc connector, so no brightness or contrast adjustments
yes I think the same...I do have two of this beautiful acryl apple displays in my basement incl. cube power supply and ADC/DVI adapters...but I never managed it getting them running with modern MacOS. Same so many people I have asked about it in user groups.
Nice job, I want one, always loved the cube design. I think a Blu-ray should be in their in place of the old drive as others have said, dropping in a disk is one of the cool things about the cube.
That's an amazing project! The empty space should definitely be populated by an optical drive! If possible to retrofit the original drive, that'd look great to keep the toaster aesthetics :D
Would LOVE to see the step-by-step conversion video. I only have the cube's outer shell. I am too lazy to do anything substantial I just place the M1 Mini directly on top of that and call it done. LOL.
I absolutely loved by Cube, which is why I still have it in the loft waiting for the time that it can be upgraded. My bugs with the original design were always the sheer amount of cables it necessitated, for the powerbrick, the external speakers, and a dongle so you could access the paltry two USB ports. This M1 upgrade is an awesome solution.
I just bought a G4 Cube off eBay so I can do this! This is something that I have dreamed about for a very long time! I always loved the Cube, but couldn't justify the cost when it was new, and then the tech changed so much that it was no longer capable. NOW I will have the Cube I have always wanted! I can't wait for the full build instructions on how to put the M1 components into the Cube properly. I am subscribed and waiting with bated breath. And, once completed, this *will* become my daily driver!
@@timfederwitz because less than 150,000 were ever sold and generally they are still functional computers that someone who wishes to use them in their original form (i.e. for music production) could make use of.
My apologies in advance if this is an interweb rando being harsh - your lighting and set dressing are beautiful. If you’re able to slow down and stabilize the camera movement in your b-roll, it would significantly enhance the use of those clips. Ken Burns effect, motion tracking, camera tripods/sliders, etc. What you’re doing in the video is a cool idea. The aesthetics of the G4 were as ahead of their time as they are more pleasing to today’s MacMini.
I appreciate the kindly worded feedback! Which shots looked bad to you? I was using sliders/tripods/OIS and stabilization in post. If you could provide timestamps I'd love to take a look. Have a great day! :)
I have a G4 Cube and it’s so nice to look at. Always wished I could make it usable like this but I don’t really have the use case or money to try it yet.
This is sick! I've been really tempted to pick up an M1 Mini and gut my 2012 iMac for a conversion, to compliment my M1 MacBook Air, so seeing other people do even cooler conversions is really cool.
You don't have to, just use your iMac in target display mode and connect to thunderbolt of your Macbook Air. You'll need the Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to thunderbolt 2 (mini-DP) adapter as well as a thunderbolt 2 cable. You need to have High Sierra or earlier on the iMac.
@@harrytsang1501 Yep, already do that. The main appeal of an M1 iMac to me is the power plus lots of storage space (I’d be going for 2TB). The iMac announced today would do the trick if I could afford it.
I hope that G4 cube was non working before you decided to strip it. They're getting rarer as time goes by, and those stripped out parts should be saved so someone else can use them.
Now imagine creating a cube, 1/4 the size of the original, like a rubik's cube, but with the M1 and all need it (put it on a chin in the new iMacs). Now THAT would be sick.
In that empty space, install a blu-ray/dvd/cd RW drive. Disassemble a 27” display and mount it in a ½” thick piece of plexiglas, finished to look like the original 17” display. Use ½” ID vinyl tubing to contain the power chord for the display and another thinner vinyl tubing to take IO data and display data from the cube to the display. Don’t forget to add T-bolt and Type C ports to the new display. You will have the finest looking Mac ever! And if you have the Harmon-Cardin 3 speaker set laying around... Wow!
Thanks Nic ... you just made my day! ... I bought a G4 Cube many years ago and it has been in storage ... it is just great to make this work of art usable again! ... many thanks for this tip! ... Stay Safe, Happy and Healthy! ... Greetings from Singapore/Malaysia.
Wow this is really cool! Gotta new sub! Would it be possible to adjust the hard wear through a mod like to handle more displays without the display link software?
That design somehow looks better than most tech today. Also a DVD/Blu Ray drive for sure, maybe a discrete GPU too see how well it works paired with M1
At 49, I feel extremely ancient hearing that the G4 Cube is 20 years old. Seems like it was only yesterday that everyone was arguing about the acrylic case cracks. At the time, someone in our office had a Cube with the 22inch Cinema Display. Nothing Apple makes today is anywhere near the level of sexy compared to the G4 Cube. Looking at, and playing with that machine elicited an immediate “wow, everything else kinda sucks now” reaction. This and the lamp iMac’s were the most impressive examples of Apple’s Jobs’ian era industrial design. Today they just keep rehashing the same aluminum lump design language.
For a complete history you have to go back to 1985. I did a somewhat tongue in cheek post about it on a blog years ago. Jobs was given a thick, square glass bowel by the Dean of Lund University, Sweden in 1985 and the Dean said "Steve, I would ike to give you this unique Swedish glassware. If you put the Mac in it I don't mind".
Hey Nic, great work! I have a 20th Anniversary Macintosh (TAM) in perfect condition. I think an M1 would be great inside of it. You up for the challenge!
Apple (or some 3rd party) should start officially supporting this stuff, with conversion kits. Their G4 Cube and adjustable iMac are fantastic designs hampered by the technology of their time.
Wonderful video. The only gripe I've got is when you say that monitor was the only one that looks right with the G4 cube! (*said teasingly*) TBH, almost *all* of the excellent Studio Displays from around that time match the aesthetic perfectly and look great when paired with the cube.
What would be cool, make a cnc plexiglass frame for the studio display to make it look like the monitor. Then give the cube a big ssd and a Blu-ray drive. I would buy that.
You should put a Blu-ray drive in it, as it isn’t 100% true to original if the DVD slot is useless, and if you go to Blu-ray it also upgraded to the latest standard in compact disc technology. Absolutely amazing build btw!
My very favorite Mac! Of course at the time we bought a PowerMac G4 dual-450 with Gigabit Ethernet because it was faster and cheaper. I still always wished I had a Cube. Not a failed concept at all. On the TV show Star Trek Enterprise every display screen on that bridge set was an actual computer display, each driven by its own G4 Cube! Wonderful that you could put a mini in that beautiful case. All that extra space? You MUST have a DVD drive, if only for historical accuracy. I expect even after you add that you'll still have room for another SSD.
I’ve seen a couple of M1 mini re casings but this by far the coolest and most desirable I’ve seen yet!
M4 mini swap G4 cube would be insanely great!
"The G4 Cube came before its time, Its time is today" sounded like it was straight out of a Apple Event
