  • Embark on a visually impaired adventurer's journey as I attempts to waterproof an old Eureka Timberline 2 tent using Thompson's Water Seal. Despite the shaky quality, the process is insightful. The tent held up well, with no color changes on the fly. Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments.

We have not used a tent in many years after relocating to the tropics. This was an interesting test of Thompson's water seal on fabric. Time will tell if it works or if it will hold up well over the long haul.

Still using that same town one of my favorite really old but solid and the waterproofing is still great but I'll probably reshoot so you can see what's going on in the video better

With the boy scouts we used original Thompson's water seal clear not milky sealed all our tents and if you put it on clothes like t shirt army jacket totally waterproof. On clothes however need to air out for a couple of days.Ps on tents use a 2 in brush on seams.

    Thanks for making this vid.
So how did it work out? Like long term? Which Thompson’s did you use? Was it water clean up or did you have to use paint thinner or mineral spirits?
Did the Thompson’s leave any type of sticky residue?
Oh more question, (shoot sorry for all the questions)
what fabric did you use the Thompson’s on? Was it canvas or polyester?

Np, thanks for watching. Stay tuned new video in the works using Olympia Brand clear all surface seal (no more Thompson's in my Home Depot). The Thompson's was clear and for use on all surface types. I did not thin it out. Lots of waste but gets the job done, Proofing is still holding today, had it out a couple days ago for 2 days of rain. Next vid will show how I like applying it now, was experiment using a pressure spray bottle for water plants from the Dollarama in my area, seems to have worked great but once the vid isup you can see how it stands up to the backwash of my pool for a few minutes - figured that would simulate rain?

I tried Thompson’s and felt it didn’t work too well. Always somewhat waxing feeling, never too waterproof on fabric. That’s just my experience but I wouldn’t use Thompson’s on fabric

I watched a video where a guy dilutes silicone sealer in something like naptha, and then soaks an old bedsheet in it, in a bucket, like he's doing homeless laundry. Then, he takes the sheet out, and hangs it up on a line to dry for a day. Silicone is IMO an excellent idea for making a waterproof "tarp" like this.

Works for me. Refined it a bit. I now use a dollar store pressurized spray bottle and Olympia brand cuz thats whats in my local store. Bit filmy after but not tacky after a couple days drying. Spray bottle on mist setting gives more even coating. Can spimge wipe any beading. Easy to apply. I do find silicone and paint thinner gives thicker more durable coat. May do a follow up video with water test to see how it performs.

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback. Getting some new gear and learning how to use things like warp stabilization so hoping things start looking smoother. Stay tuned for a repost of this one and let me know if it looks any smoother.
