  • Recording of a webinar from the Head Start National Center on Quality Teaching and Learning (Jan 17, 2014) which discusses how to communicate to children that all emotions are okay, and how to manage them. Begin with emotional literacy, teaching the words tense, stressed, and relaxed. Use relaxation techniques (thermometer, deep breaths, etc.). Help children manage anger and handle disappointment. Use dragon brain and turtle steps.

Absolutely brilliant thanks with so many great ideas. I work at special needs primary school and am putting together a big lesson plan on feelings. Looking forward to trying some of your ideas 😊🌈

My nephew cries with such desperation every time another toddler leaves. And now that we are on lockdown, it's everytime that he either goes home or my other nephew leaves. Separation anxiety from other children? It breaks my heart.

My headstart used paths we used TURTLE. Technique ours were Twiggle and the flowers and candle. And we have visuals of kids with different emotions to help with identifying what you r feeling basically point to the picture face of how you r feeling.

I wouldn't use dragon brain. I'm not even close to being a kid anymore, but there's no way you could convince the child version of me that being a dragon isn't awesome. Why would I choose to quieten the dragon when it's so big and powerful and makes me _feel_ big and powerful?
I'm not sure what an appropriate subsitute image would be though

Hi, Curious why you didn't mention the PATHS® curriculum, which is an evidenced based curriculum that Head Start used (in 2012)? The curriculum, PATHS® included the story of Twiggle the Turtle and how to calm down, very similar to the strategy you shared here with "Tiny" the Turtle. I hope that you'll reconsider giving credit where credit is due. Thank you!

She stated that it's used in a lot of different curricula... just didn't name them all.

Not helpful at all. Not relevant for kids. The child mind does not think like this.
