Great video, I love that you show all aspects of keeping “warts and all” a lot of youtubers would probably hide mites and scale rot but these things can happen to anyone and its great that you show it and also how to deal with it! Thanks for sharing and look forward to your next video
Thanks so much! That's my view on it really, it can happen to anyone and it's really scary if you don't know what to do. I don't want to paint reptile keeping as the easiest thing ever- it has its difficulties. This channel would be pants if it were all rose tinted!
Thank you so much for showing the bad times as well as the good. So many people assert that keeping a Royal is no harder than keeping a goldfish (another animal that's been a victim to horribly poor husbandry in my opinion, but that's another story). I'm in London too and the weather has been insane, so don't beat yourself up over missing the signs. We learn from our mistakes and move on :) And in your case, you did a great thing by educating others. Appreciate it! Edit: If you don't mind me asking, do you have a good reptile vet you can recommend in London. I don't have my snake yet, so I'm still trying to work out what's best... and finding a vet I can trust would definitely help.
Firstly, thanks so much for saying that- I'm so fed up of people saying "get a royal, they're easy". And secondly, yes! There's a vet practice in Sheen called CJ Hall. They have a wonderful exotics vet who gives great advice
Thank you so much for the recommendation, really appreciate it and will definitely try them out. Just got my silicone in the mail so going to spend today sealing my viv, so I can get on with setting it up. So excited! :D
Thank you! Got a heat spike in sweden atm and humidity shot up over 80% in my ball python enclosures! They have also been in direct contact with coconut husk (which is moist) and without looking i'm 99% sure one of them has scale rot. Going to build a new, somewhat dry rack system for my ball pythons right away! The humidity is really hard to keep proper atm! Thank you so much! You are a lifesaver!
Thank you for this! My boy seems like he is beginning to develop scale rot on his belly. I'm researching the heck out of what to do, and I stumbled on this video. Very helpful!
No problem! Glad it was helpful. I know how stressful it can be when you’re trying to find info. Just keep to a really good treatment routine and as long as you see improvement keep going. If it gets any worse, stop and book a vet trip :)
@@saraimunoz7086 Not quite yet, but it hasn't gotten any worse. I'm thinking he'll just have to shed it off. I bought some of the animal first aid stuff Jensen's Reptiles suggested. I found it in the dog section at Petsmart, just a generic first aid liquid. I rubbed that on my boy's belly. Then I also got some plain betadine that I diluted with water, and rubbed that on his belly. He just has a few brownish reddish scales on one section of his belly. They aren't sores or anything like that, just discolored scales that don't look right. I noticed this a couple of weeks ago, and it's no better, but no worse. It hasn't spread at all. I'm just keeping an eye on him and doing what I can. If it starts getting worse I'll bring him to the vet. I'm hoping he'll shed later this month but sometimes he goes a long time without shedding.
Thanks for such an informative video. One point - which is stating the bleeding obvious - after returning the snake to the viv, thoroughly wash and disinfect your hands, and remember to use a thick paper towel round the tap handles when turning the taps on, otherwise you will transfer bacteria to the tap, and it will end up back on your hands when you turn the taps off! Re humidity: in such conditions a dehumidifier is the only solution.
Absolutely right! Good hygiene after treatment is paramount, thanks for adding that comment! As for humidity drops in vivariums, fans are a great option. I have them on a few of my vivs and they work a treat. If it's ambient humidity in the room, then yes, a dehumidifier is the only solution. I have a great compact one which works beautifully!
My two year old albino has just got scale rot. It's my first time any of my animals have got scale rot within five years of keeping them lol. Safe to say I'm very nervous. Thanks for the vid, have ordered the stuff, wish me luck. I'm going about disinfecting the vivarium is it worth putting him on his normal substrate or should I swap him to something like kitchen roll for the time being?
Good luck! If it’s early stages then this treatment will work, no problem. Like with anything though, if you see it getting worse rather than better, a vet appointment is necessary. There’s no need to use kitchen roll as substrate unless you’re worried that the previous mix isn’t suitable and you’re looking into alternatives. Most scale rot is caused by a boom of bacteria in high humidity, or a enclosure that needs cleaning more regularly. It’s totally up to your judgement with you how you handle that side of things :) I hope your snake is feeling much better really quickly. I know how worrying it can be
I just got a ball python 2 months ago and I'm pretty sure he has scale rot but I don't know for sure, there are little brown marks on his belly and his skin had been peeling where the brown spots are. Is this scale rot? I cleaned his enclosure and removed the substrate.
Best to chat to your exotics vet about suitable options in your country. There will definitely be alternatives, but I don’t know where you live, what’s available, etc. Best of luck finding what you need! 😁
My snake just shed , but I’m now realizing that she has scale rot. I’m doing the Betadine treatment and bathing her . How would I know when to stop the treatment if she just went in shed?

I only had her for a month and there alot of problems with her that Im kind of shocked that the snake was given to me by a vet tech who's job is helping animals, but nonetheless Im giving her the best of the best just as I do at my work (I handle reptiles for a living) and a better life. 😊
I’ve just found what I’m pretty sure is scale rot on my pied’s underside! I’ve ordered Tamodine and the F10 items to arrive Saturday to start treatment on her, so thank you for posting this video, you’ve made the process so much easier for me! Question though, when I clean out her enclosure, should I put fresh bedding back into it, or should I keep her on paper towel for a while?
Personally, I choose to continue using fresh substrate to make sure that other requirements are met. But as long as you’re monitoring humidity properly and want to use paper towel while your snake is healing, that’s fine too
Thanks for this vid. I have just found the blisters on my python and it has worried me. You say it can happen with a wet substrate and humidity my viv is very dry there is only a small bit if poo left where I have missed. The only thing I can think of is humidy and temps so thank you for showing the vid
Hello is there a way I can email you or send you a picture of my snake she's a super fire I've only had her 2ish months and she has some spots on her back her belly seems fine the spots look like scabs they are not red or inflamed so I'm not sure it's scale rot or if she's banging or dinging herself up at night when she's climbing around her tank at night she falls over. Yeah, exact same treatment for any snake with early signs of scale rot or any bacterial scale infection. If you don’t see improvement within a week or it worsens, definitely seek vet treatment :)
Yes you can! Make sure he is on unprinted newspaper, brown paper, or paper towels and keep it's environment dry as well! Remember too keep at proper temps and humidity adjusted accordingly as well as keep him or her in well ventilated tub or cage for proper airflow!
Daily treatment, yes. And treatment ends after there is no longer any visible issue. The snake will typically shed during that time so you'll have a better idea of any lasting infection

A shed will help, but doesn't cure the infection :) it'll take the majority of the scale damage though
