    Hi Greg! In your four tote system, does the two 55-gallon barrel filters maintain ammonia and nitrite levels? Do you have to do a weekly water change?

    • @MineralSpringsTilapia
      @MineralSpringsTilapia  8 років тому +1

      +Cyril Roberts Hey Cyril, the filter system takes care of ammonia and nitrites, however the only way for me to remove nitrates that are produced is to do water changes....i change out about 200 gallons every two or three weeks to keep nitrate levels acceptable. The total system volume is 1100 gallons.

    hi Greg. how much damage would I cause if I only circulate the water for about 10 hours a day? Electricity is not stable in my part of the world so I'm thinking of getting a solar panel to run the pump for as long as it can during the day.
    I'm planning a pretty big, but inexpensive system because some of the materials are available to me for free. I'm considering tilapia or catfish in six 1,000 gallon tanks.

    • @MineralSpringsTilapia
      @MineralSpringsTilapia  7 років тому +1

      Hey Gbengoose, not moving the water 24 hours a day may not be a huge issue, but the water will get dirty very quickly, but you must run air into the tank 24/7. If the fish go without air in the water, they will die fairly quickly depending on how many fish are in a 1000 gallon tank and what size they are. If there is a lot of large fish in a 1000 gallon tank over a 12 hour night, you will probably loose some (if not all) your fish.

    • @Greenwashedhipppie
      @Greenwashedhipppie 6 років тому

      You could run air and even circulation (air lift pump) off a huge compression air tank. Store the air while you have power and use it when you need. Prolly be cheaper than batteries. A compression will go bad, but tanks last forever unlike batteries.

    hey, when your fish are small don't they swim through the pipes at the bottom of the ibc? How do you prevent that because mine do but i put a wire mesh on them, only thing is I have to change the wire often before it rusts and rottens.

      Jameel Phillip Yea Jameel, the holes in the plug pipe are 1/4 inch and are all up and down and around the pipe..they pickup the vast majority of solid wastes and carry it to the solids filter....When you do a water change on the tanks, reach in there with a curved toilet brush and go up and down and under the pipe so you can dislodge anything that is hung up on the edges of the holes or across two holes. I have never had a 1 inch + fish get through the holes. Thanks for the comment....Greg

      Mineral Springs Tilapia Thanks a lot. And I've been learning a lot from your vids, good job, very well done i must say. I currently have an aquaponic system with 3 tanks and I'm gonna setup a 6 tank system like what you have here

    • @MineralSpringsTilapia
      @MineralSpringsTilapia  9 років тому

      Jameel Phillip A six ibc tank system will contain approximately 1500 gallons of water (assuming that you are using 275 gal totes. Just make sure you use a large enough pump. You will need one that will be able to turn your system over about once an hour. My system is 1100 gallons and I use a 1500gph pump and it is just about right.

    Why not use a media bed and some heavy feeding plants to pull out nitrate? Thanks for sharing! Awesome setup!

    • @MineralSpringsTilapia
      @MineralSpringsTilapia  6 років тому

      Hey Joseph, if you put plants in a breeding tank of fish, you would have to replace them every week. The fish would graze them down to nothing very quickly. Having a media bed in the tanks for my purposes would double my tank cleaning times as well. My fish, except for my breeders, spend very little time in the hatchery.

    • @Greenwashedhipppie
      @Greenwashedhipppie 6 років тому

      Mineral Springs Tilapia Not plants, or media in your tanks. A separate tank or tanks for media and plants. I have both in my system that's not up yet. Float beds for plants, and a media tank with bell siphon to cycle the water up and down to convert nitrite to nitrate.

    • @MineralSpringsTilapia
      @MineralSpringsTilapia  6 років тому

      oh, ok. Problem with the hatchery is there are 34 tanks in the building with fish in every tank and not enough room to work effciently now. Don't know how I could integrate a system like that into the mix. I would need to add on to the building I guess.

    • @Greenwashedhipppie
      @Greenwashedhipppie 6 років тому

      Mineral Springs Tilapia you could, put the extra beds or tanks over your existing tanks and stay on the same foot print. Alot of aquaponic system's are set up that way anyway for convenience. It seams like your water bill would be staggering the way you are doing it now.

    • @MineralSpringsTilapia

      Water in Tennessee is Not High. The biggest problem is that my power is above the tanks and I can't put anything up there. Also I am 65 and lost my leg in a workplace accident 11 years ago and couldn't do the construction to build a system like that. Although I see where it could work, my sponge filters take care of the ammonia and nitrites and I do the water changes weekly to take care of nitrates.

  • @evankenison588

    I have watched all your videos now and really appreciate what you have shared. In one video, you mentioned you put 1 table spoon of table salt, non iodized, in your tanks with fish that are a few inches or larger to help keep the parasite problems down. Do you use that water that you change out to fertilize/water your yard plants/garden? If so, does the salt impact the plants viability?

    • @MineralSpringsTilapia
      @MineralSpringsTilapia  8 років тому

      +Evan Kenison Since I have the Hornorum Male, I am not allowed to discharge water directly from my facility to the outside, I first have to run it through a tank laced with chlorine in order to sterilize the water the level of chlorine is much higher than city water, so I can't even use it to water my plants.

    • @evankenison588
      @evankenison588 8 років тому

      +Mineral Springs Tilapia what is the concern about using the water on your land from that breed of tilapia?

    • @evankenison588
      @evankenison588 8 років тому

      +Evan Kenison +Mineral Springs Tilapia I ask this question because I am considering getting
      Hornorum Male for Chocolate or Pennyfish hybrid's myself, but want to
      use the water to fertilize my plants

    • @MineralSpringsTilapia
      @MineralSpringsTilapia  8 років тому +1

      +Evan Kenison The concern is escapement. I live on a hill and within 1 mile of a creek. When they came to inspect my facility they said I would have to treat the water before discharge to make sure there was no chance of anything alive in the water and that it would have to be discharged using a 4 inch PVC pipe dug 20 feet into the ground, So after treating the water in 2 55 gallon barrels I open a line that is going down the PVC pipe to be absorbed into the ground 20 feet from the surface...they just want to make sure that there is no opportunity for the species to get into the lakes in E. Tennessee. Not sure why they are so worried about that, the fish cannot live in the water when it drops below 60 degrees.

      +Mineral Springs Tilapia The small fish can sometimes be siphoned up when cleaning tanks. The fry are only half the size of a grain of rice and can be easily overlooked.

      Cover the end of the syphon hose that is in the tank with a porus sponge or net to keep them from going through.

    hi.. how often you do the water change?

    • @MineralSpringsTilapia
      @MineralSpringsTilapia  9 років тому +2

      Luis Cancel This is a subjective answer.....only when I need to. What that means is that I use various factors to determine when the water needs to be changed. If there is a light bio-load in the tanks, I might get away with once a month. Like right now, for instance, There are only 58 fish in 1100 gallons of water, so it takes those 58 fish a lot longer to affect the water quality than when there were 1000 fish in the same system. When I have a heavy bio-load in system, I have to change some of the water every two weeks. Another factor that influences how often you do water change is how much you are feeding. If you are trying to grow your fish fast, you are usually feeding more heavily and the fish are producing more waste so you have to do water changes (and clean the solids filter) more often. If it is winter and your water is cooler, the fish don't eat as much so you don't need to change water as often. If you test your water (ammonia, nitrites, nitrates and PH), your water quality tests will tell you when you need to change some water. Thanks for the comment Luis, hope this helps. ........Greg

    • @MineralSpringsTilapia
      @MineralSpringsTilapia  5 років тому

      I only grew tilapia so I don't really know the answer to your question, but it depends on the size of the fish in the tote....I would not let the water get too nasty before changing out at least some of the water. I would probably change the water before the point where you can't see the fish on the bottom of the tote.
