    Seemed like a lot of work to me. And all okay if you happen to have an old shower hose of that type hanging around, I would have thrown it out. Plus you had to have the other components hanging around as well. A few weeks ago, I bought a nice lamp, all blue, with a heavy round base, adjustable 15 inch goose neck, round directional shade and nice on/off rocker switch with a plugged electrical cord at a local store for $6. and I couldn't be happier, also came with a bulb. Yes it's nice accomplishing something but I have bigger projects that need attention that I need to spend my time on rather than fabricating some makeshift light, that may pose a safety hazard. If I make something, I go by a guideline, it has to meet safety standards, look good, made with quality parts and be technically sound. Solidly and reliably constructed that I could sell it if I wanted.

      draggy76 Not a soul here was talking about soldering motherboards mate. When you're working with wires (like the guy in the video) you heat the wires and melt the solder on top. I believe it's so that the solder a actually adheres to the metal instead of just falling off

Fixed over 3,000 amplifiers, juke boxes, tape machines etc. I would touch the soldering iron bit to both things being soldered, at the junction between them. How long for was a matter of experience. Then I fed in the solder to flow over the heated surfaces. Just sayin'.

    Beware of the Fire Hazard!!!!
    Hi,
    I like your Idea though i have a comment.
    You may NEVER EVER put soldering tin on the copper leads in the fitting before mounting them wiht scews!!
    In time the tin will start to creep away from the screw and there will be a bad connection what will start to sparck. And creating a light bow. Eventually things become warme and will burrn. So just skip the tinning part put the screw directy on the copper and you will be fine.
    Cheers !!!

    • @gordonburns8731

      Lemme suggest that you too look at the electric codes. There is no “earth” on any of my lamps. In fact I would challenge you show me any free standing lamps that do. As for the steel exterior of this lamp it is called, and I quote, “Flexible metal conduit” look it up in your code book. I would challenge that the use of the shower hose may even be a better choice as metal is in fact encasing a rubber hose offering a second barrier of protection with the wires insulation being the first. I will concede that the termination at the wood base leaves a lot to be desired. But all said it is an ingenious idea of using what is on hand rather than just buying it. And that is what fman4234 was trying to say. So sorry but haters are not justified.

      Behricks Woodworks i think his point had more to do with not having any quality control on the parts that DIY-ers will use, and with electricity, it adds to the level of danger to projects that most people have little awareness of.
      Partially justified......
      Having worked in the fire department for several years, people have a difficult time with electrical components off the shelf........much less putting ‘found’ objects to use.

      Vince - I totally agree, I think its the same here in the UK aswell. Anything metal that you can touch that is part of any appliance thats powered by mains ac voltages, HAS to be earthed, so you don't get 'floating' voltages appearing on the metal by induction, or, if the appliance develops a fault, the electricity doesn't use YOU as the earth instead(!)

    • @frankmueller25
      @frankmueller25 6 років тому +1

      Vince Mulqueen yes, sorry to say but the pinch point between the flexible metal tube, the wood and the wire cable seem to be where the wire insulation might fail first. Drilling a hole, the diameter of the flexible hose, about a third way through the wood and securing it with hot melt glue should make it safer. Also, was that thick Pb solder used inside the flexible tubing? If so, may I suggest copper instead. If you use insulated strained copper wire, it can handle many more times the flexing without generating the harmful lead (Pb) dust. Finally, using 3 conductor cable and securing the ground to all electrically floating metal parts in the lamp head should make it internationally code acceptable.

    Even though the flexible hose will protect the wire from outside influence but the two metal rods (1:35) inserted within (as they bend and flex) will rub against the insulation, exposes the wire/s, and then electrocute someone.

    I introduced this very idea to native tribes while doing my missionary work in central Africa.
    I got two responses .......... first was; "What's electricity?" Second was; "A little tough going down, but once you cut the head off the snake, it was actually quite delicious!"

      A typical missionary spewing atrocity literature. AAfrica has culture unimaginable by any western whiteman.
      "Our land was vast and green. We had no boundaries and no taxes. The medicine man was free. We toiled when the sun was up and made love to our women at night. Only a white with a cross can foolishly think that he can improve a system like this!" - Unknown

      At 00:07 he uses a hacksaw to cut the tube. It doesn't look easy. Either the hacksaw is extremely blunt, or the hose is metal.
      The hose is also clamped in a vice without showing any distortion, so is either very sturdy plastic, or is metal.

    • @jamescgardner1269
      @jamescgardner1269 6 років тому

      W Winterheart... looks like ss when he's cutting it with the hacksaw mate. They are not all plastic at all, I would definately earth it in this case.

    • @wiretamer5710
      @wiretamer5710 6 років тому

      The cable itself is double insulated

    • @jamescgardner1269
      @jamescgardner1269 6 років тому

      WireTamer ....yes, insulated but not earthed. So for arguments sake if we assume it is a metallic flexihose and we assume a kid plays bendy snake lamp with it every day and it eventually cuts through two layers of insulation (more than likely right where the cable exits the flexihose at the base because there looks to be an excellent friction point there), and eventually (because it's not earthed), be a hazard? Just saying.. safety first and all that...

      Why is it not safe, modern LED light bulbs give off little heat, and the shade and lamp holder are both off the shelf certified electrical products.

    • @LifeOnHoth
      @LifeOnHoth 6 років тому +4

      but the assembly part of it is weak at best from start to finish. The soldering is not soild, the hose can cut the insulation on the wire at the base. One way to make it relatively safe without changing the design is to use low voltage components and a wallwart. This way it won't catch on fire when you have bent the hose back and forth 30 times and the insulation is stripped, and the strands in the wire gets cut off one by one until there are so little left of them that they melt or spark, and u have a fire going before you know it.
      It does NOT matter if you use all the correct and certified components when you use them all the wrong way.......
