  • Tank car loading platform. Walthers Cornerstone kit # 933-3104. how to build it. one of the more time consuming kits i have built. i show how to build one of these kits. and some tips along the build. biggest thing is one step at a time. let it dry and move on to the next step. paint your long pipes first. these will be hard to get to after the kit is built. painting all the handrails at the start is an option. but not necessary, but you will have to paint them before the last of the pipes get attached.

    You are more organized than me. I can get a bit rammy. You expounded patience. You may have taught me something I need. PATIENCE.

    Modelling sure tests your patience, Sparky. I've retired and gone back to modelling after about 25 years of absence from the hobby. I'm still in N scale, and with average eyesight, that's patience. I've found a lot of kits are not the greatest with instructions, so you're absolutely right. Check and test fit before you glue, and take your time.
    Please keep up the great videos in 2019!

    Fantastic idea to highlight the extra parts being left out I will have to try that the next time I build a similar kit.

    Nice video, few tips.if youare to paint a black plastic in to light, like yellow, it will be easier and neater to buy a primer in a rattle can with gray. Just one layer at the time and few sprays, Before that, those areas that is to be clued, cover it up with ,asking tape as the paint makes the paint dont let the glue bond. After the railings are gray, spray light on the yellow in thin layers untill it is actually yellow. You have before spraying test spray both on something, like a scrap piesces of sprue. Files and sanding blocks of pretty fine grits are handy to as small straight edges. And before everything is clued together with the parts painted in different colour, it is a great idea ot paint the black parts with flat black. Usually black covers well, even with a brush so you only have to have just one layer.again protect the surfaces that will be clued to make the bond easier. Thanks for sharing!

    Cool. Testor's plastic model cement is #1. You just have to get the paint out of the joints

    My first one of those took well over a week to build and that was around twenty years ago.It turned out very well. If you think it's hard to build try getting one in an estate sale that was badly put together and try disassembly before a rebuild. I've been over ten years working on that one (as and when I feel like it. I have a set of lights to put in mine when the rebuild is done. You did well on it Sparky. ..........David.

    I agree that Walthers kit instructions aren't the best . I think I've heard about a guy who got a Cadillac one piece at a time.

    Sparky-For some reason, the super glue didnt do me good with plastics. On the plastic I have put together so far, Testors Model Masters works very well! If you have paint on and you need to glue, i try to not paint it or use your xacto to remove the paint. Model looks good! Like You say, second one be easier!

    I'm used to building other sorts of plastic model kits... spaceships and such... but I've been putting together some RR scenery kits for a friend and you're right about the instructions being kinda minimal. It really takes a good bit of interpretation to figure out how to get some of them together.
    I do prefer the liquid styrene glue though, hold parts together and brush on a bit... capillary action gets it into the join and gets it done. Generally less messy/fussy than the red tube gel.

    @sparky107107 Re. the Deck Ramp Hinge joint.
    Here is a tip my grandfather taught me back in the LATE 1950's. I'm old, not an antique. We were building a NASA gantry with four "DARN" hinges.
    Daw had me use electric tape OVER the joint. Side to Side. Then glue the uncovered underside area up to about a half inch away from the tape. No closer. You don't want the glue to wick. Finish the glued structure and let thoroughly dry. The next day clip in the hinges pins. Done & done.

    I have several kits of that! I did put 1 together, but don't remember it being that bad? I didn't paint anything. I'll have to see if my walkways move up and down? I know the fill tube move! RH

    Model glue doesn't stick to paint, you have to scrape the paint off or mask the areas to be glued. Wrong numbers or parts that don't match are common with Walthers kits.

  • @dacuzzz
    @dacuzzz 5 років тому

    hi sparky... glue just don't adhere to paint... so when you do the next kit you will spend more time on it because you will be masking off parts that need to be glued... i say that all the time in my build vids...i wish they had that kit in N scale because Gary wants me to build 2 for him...any how you did a good job... thx for sharing... vinny

    Good video and my feelings exactly but to be honest I wouldn't have given it a 3 out of ten. Combine this kit with its unnecessary small parts (could have been molded in) and its horrid instructions this kits actually not worth buying. I could do better with styrene sheet and tubes. LOL

    • @sparky107107
      @sparky107107  5 років тому +1

      i do agree mostly with you, but once you build the first kit, second one is a breeze.. but then you have to ask,, how many people buy 2 of a kit. just so they can figure out how to build it ,, THEMSELVES.

  • @MikesProjectsandHobbiesMC
    @MikesProjectsandHobbiesMC 5 років тому

    Walthers has the worst instructionsof any kit I have ever built and I have been building them for 50 years. LOL
