The scene where Morton looks outside the window and then at the painting of the pacific is my favorite scene of all time. It is about achieving your dreams and never giving up. Extremely powerful scene.
Ambitiously & ruthlessly sought to make it to the ocean, only to perish ingloriously in a puddle, accompanied by the sound of crashing waves. God I miss Sergio.
I have to agree seeing a mans ambition stripped away in mere moment's was a at least for me a really intense scene and the way what he wanted was right there but he couldn't quite reach it was just like damn i feel that one Amazing movie
Just reading through the comments, and am happy to find so many who feel the same as I do about "Morton's Theme" and how it's used in the film. Morricone's brilliant writing of this piece, just captures so much of the emotion, the sadness, the longing, the persona of Morton, all mixed into one. When I view the scene when Frank returns to the train, and eventually walks through each car and finds Morton struggling next to the puddle....it just pulls my emotions in so many different directions. Hard to put into words. But the music is really what captures my heart. Just nails it for me!! Thanks Ennio and Sergio and Henry and all the others, who make this film one of the greatest of all times. Those who can't appreciate it, for whatever reasons, have no heart and no conscience and as one comment below says, "No brain". They're missing so much!! Dig, DmGrk
This song is one of his hidden masterpieces - yet one of the finest pieces of music that ever struck my ears. I’m 30 but this music is in the timeless category which lives on through time
This scene just hit me hard. Morton has done terrible things, but in the end, he just wanted to see the blue of the Pacific. Him watching that painting with the waves in the background was just so well shot.
FRANK made bad things, not him,he's never wanted to kill McBains, nor steal thier property,he was really minded to spend even his last coin to realize his railway dreams
Great music for a great character. In the story Morton embodies the evil capitalist but Leone turns him into that tragic, pathetic, self-contradictory figure which stands both for America's ruthlesness and candour, pursuing a childish dream through violent or dubious means. His illness seems to explain his actions even as it makes them more despicable. The music really conveys that ambiguity and Morton is almost likeable in the end as he died reaching for that puddle. That "almost" is what makes the character so sad and lonely because you can never be quite on his side and at the same time you cannot quite condemn him for all the sufferings he caused.
This piece of music sounds so modern somehow, timeless even, not at all like it was made for a western movie. And still it fits perfectly. Ennio Morricone was a genius.
Mortin is by far the most deeply complicated and trajic character in the greatest western ever made ! The drive to build the greatest nation in history without consequence !
Morton's not pure evil like Frank. He's just so absorbed in his railroad obsession that he condones Frank's atrocities (up to a point). Certainly a tragic character for all his flaws.
People really disregard the epoch when they look at Morton's ambition. The only way a man with crippled legs and faint health would ever reach the Pacific at that time was through a railroad; no ship was confident enough to brave the Strait of Magellan's deadly waters for so petty a reason, and any trip circling the globe would have either taken way too long, ending with Morton dead in foreign land, or he would simply die on that hypothetical world-touring boat due to his poor health. Morton really aimed for the next-to-impossible with this. He's almost comparable to Alexander, in a way, who sought to reach the other end of the Old World by conquest; while he sought the other end of the New World by trade.
Ennio morricone is a pure freaking genius with music.. All the music he wrote for all of Sergio's films were sheer genius.. All of Sergio's films and Ennio's music were written like they just naturally joined at the hip.. If you dislike his music or Sergio's films.. You were born without a brain
Even the most ruthless businessmen are after all, just humans in with hopes and aspirations in the end. You could argue that Morton got what he deserved for dealing with the devil, but seeing a man die along with his failed dream deserves some shred of empathy
I've always said that this film has five main characters. Morton is very important to the overall puzzle of events and deserves his own major title of starring role.
Not just a beautiful soundtrack but add Cardinale, Fonda,Robards,Bronson and Ferzetti then top it off with the fantastic Sergio Leone’s ability to make stunning films and you have a once in a lifetime convergence never ever to be repeated.
Sergio Leone: Hey, Ennio, take this character. Pure evil, but isn't after money or power, all he wants is to see the Pacific Ocean at all costs. Could you write up some theme music for him? Ennio Morricone: Sure, no problem.
And yet he was such a bad man; he swept away so many lives in his quest for the Pacific. But you're both so right; his death is one of the most poignant on screen.

Ennio is such a musical genius.. He wrote music for each character of this movie.. He was so brilliant with Sergio's films that they became iconic, without his music Idk if they would have been so legendary
I don´t even think Morton was bad, he just had a dream, but hired the worng people to realize it. I did kind of love him, even thou he had tuberculosis he still wanted to realize his dream. And yes I did shed a tear when he died.
The Dream is mass murder to dispossess the Chicano inhabitants of the land post US-Mexican War symbolized by Morton's death squad killing Harmonica's family ; the book is "Native Americans of California and Nevada" by Jack Forbes.
That's the depth of this movie, yes, at the core: it's a vengeance story between two gun men: Bronson and Fonda, BUT around them, there's life and death, mediocrity, times changes, power swaps. Everything else is "mediocre": Morton is a bad guy because of the business, but he follows a broken kid dream, Cheyenne is a "desperado", a wild bandit, but with a heart and some sense of justice. And Cheyenne dies poorly, as Morton died poorly: Morton with panic hit Cheyenne in the belly, what a poor end for a guy who was feared, and even with all gold in the world, Morton couldn't reach his dream. Obviously, being feared and a cold killer, didn't save Frank neither. The wild west, nature, raw violence, is swept by the railroad, capitalism and a new way of violence: money, industrialism. Only Jill goes through this with a future, from a New Orleans "whore", to the mother of a new modern city. TBH, this is my favorite movie, and there are MANY moments making me crying like a baby, it's so well told, so well pictured, so well "sounded", simple stuff made epic. Sergio and Ennio were a killing pair.
What I loved was that all the main characters had their motivations and the music matched it perfectly and beautifully. You can even feel sorry for what's essentially a bad guy, but would he have done it the same way if he had time?
my god thats the most beautiful song in the whole soundtrack for me and kinda tells you everything that you need to know about whats going to happen to Morton.
This too is my favorite theme from the movie, I waited a long time...this is the part when Mr. Morton was looking at the painting with the ship on the ocean and his death.
Même les musiques moins connues qui font partie de moments précis de chaque film sont superbe ! Ou parfois une musique par acteur.... C'est ces détails qui manquent au cinéma d'aujourd'hui
Death by old age is already a curse upon our kind, but disease makes it so much worse once more. Imagine the great things some men could have created if they just had more time, especially given what they already accomplished even within the limits of their natural mortality. Maybe this would have a dark side but ... Morton, in this movie, surely was such a man.
Non riesco ad non emozionarmi ogni volta che ascolto questo tema di Morricone, Mr Morton/Ferzetti. Uno dei migliori del film capolavoro di Leone. Tutti gli attori in stato di grazia. Top!
You dream🤔you scheme🤔reality bites🤔.but the best feeling you ever have is ...the Dream👍This world is all a fleeting show for man's illusion given🙏🙏🤔🤔👍👍
Sublime.
For some reason the most poignant point in the movie for me. The great music. Perhaps the saddest I've ever seen a character in a movie --I would say the effect is about 80% the music! It's ironic that the movie depicts the industrial age vanquishing cowboys etc, but this guy has the strongest feelings. It is fun, also, to compare this story to Heart of Darkness!
Congratulations, Maxheard. Not too many people appreciate this little musical interlude from the film. And its not on the original soundtrack album. Consequentially, it's hard to find. So, thanks for this upload.
The music was/is so powerful in that scene, you can literally feel what he's feeling. The genius of Ennio & Sergio. NOTHING like them around today. 1:26
Sergio leone did things right. The score was written before the film that way there wasn’t time pressure on morricone and leone could find inspiration from his work. He could make the story about the music. That’s why his films are some of the greatest pictures of all time

Agree with many comments here, something particularly poignant about Morton's dying scene, for all his flaws, there is something relatable about a man so consumed by his dream/vision, in the end he won't see to fruition, the music captures the sense of pathos, longing and regret perfectly. Morricone truly a maestro

They say that one year a star fell the night before the baja truck race. After the race started and unmarked truck, that was the falling star passes everyone and wins and doesnt stop and when its out of view people say they saw a star rising up into the sky from the direction of where the unmarked trophy truck. Like the car in wraith with charlie sheen. and sometimes on non racing days people say they sometimes hear or see the unmarked trophy truck, like a ghost of a trophy truck driver that died racing a long time ago. Like a ghost rider curse. The curse of the baja rider.
I wouldn't say Villain quite.... I'd say Frank is the main villain, you can find villainous characteristics in almost all the characters, that's a Leone trademark
Despite the terrible thing he did i felt sad when he was dying because of the song and because he wanted to see the pacific and i think he had regret for the choice he made.
This is the most beautiful song Morricone ever composed. You can feel those eyes staring off into the distance, desperate to reach the horizon.
And he knows he NEVER WILL...
Lo stesso periodo scrissi la stessa cosa. Grandissima composizione.
The scene where Morton looks outside the window and then at the painting of the pacific is my favorite scene of all time. It is about achieving your dreams and never giving up. Extremely powerful scene.
Epic. May be the most powerful scene of the movie when he died in the puddle.

One of the most underrated tracks in the soundtrack.
Morton’s story pictures perfectly that money has no value when you’re running out of time...
It’s actually one of the best explorations of the Limited nature of our time and how somethings besides family go beyond money

I think it is a fine example of a credible, human, villain. Great story telling.
Beautiful scene yes and music is a great part of it

I kind of feel like Morton's flaw is that while he wants to see the world he also knows that his past will likely undo him before he can. It's sad :(
This piece of music is my favorite in the soundtrack...
i cried when Morton died...nothing is sadder than a man dies before achiving his dreams

Like a ghost rider curse. The curse of the baja rider.
I wouldn't say Villain quite....
I'd say Frank is the main villain, you can find villainous characteristics in almost all the characters, that's a Leone trademark
I forgot this beautiful music cue . How about an extended " Mason's Walk " from " The Rock" ?
Hey, Harmonica - when they do you in, pray it's somebody who knows where to shoot. ...

MR CHOO. CHOO
Despite the terrible thing he did i felt sad when he was dying because of the song and because he wanted to see the pacific and i think he had regret for the choice he made.
less bombastic than the themes of the other characters but it made Morton sympathetic revealing the internal struggles of a dying man.
