I’m an Aussie, we had one growing up. So much fun, so little comfort. Bouncing in the back, sitting sideways with siblings, no seat belt... endless arguments and bruises! Still makes me smile!
My dream vehicle!! I'm 61 and had plenty of oppurtunities to buy used in my time......sadly for what ever reason I passed on those chances. One of many regrets in my life. Hang on to that beauty!!!
Hey do you know if toyota did one of this but on 4 doors instead of 2 doors I'm thinking of getting one of this was going for jeep wagoneer but they have issues also land Rover series 3 or 2A but land rover is known for their unreliable
Great post, wonderful rig....Yota for life. my son got a 04' V-8 4Runner with 86k years ago. 2.5 in lift, tires bars, shafts fox shocks etc and around 120k miles ago, still runs like a tank. Can't wait for your build out, especially when it comes to the Ham radio, fog lights, LED all over the place, two lithium batteries for...and a Pioneer, Klipsch, Sony 1k watt stereo surround sound with 4k tv....uhh ohh, got ah little head of myself...im excited for ya!
Reminds me a lot of the FJ55 I owned in the early 1980s. I was going to do the V8 swap from Man-A-Fre but I ended up finding too much rust. I had to give it up. Build it up! It is absolutely a unique vehicle here in the states. I hope to one day see the Beast in person... Love it!
I mean this rig is fine I guess, but it doesn't stack up to the ultimate overlanding vehicle (my '92 Toyota Camry) which has premium expedition features like: -A powerful 1.8-liter engine that goes 0-60 in a BLAZING fast 22.5 seconds -Genuine _Panafonic™_ tape deck with Jimmy Buffett's _Cheeseburger in Paradise_ stuck on repeat - A half-eaten CLIF bar in the glove compartment for sustenance on the go ...and so much more. If you beg nicely, I MIGHT be willing to trade it to you for this Landcruiser.
Ahh the old yellow NSW plate! If you ever need new plates (if they get pinched) let some of aussie watchers know and we can chase some up for you. Everyone is In Australia loves the VDJ78 troopys now with the modern 4.5 V8 turbo diesel.
That is super cool! Totally build it out. Also, that engine is super clean and it looks great in it. Can't wait to see where you guys want to take this project.
if like this.. this is more than beast !!! this is everything about, comfort, be safe walk around, that you feel be safe with your family going everywhere.. this not the beast.. but this is masterpiece !!! 👍👍👍👍👍 from indonesia
To be honest, I don't think what people say here will matter. You bought this because you wanted it and wanted to build it to drive it. You didn't ask people if you should buy it or not. So, no matter what people say, you will still go ahead and build it because that is why you bought it in the first place. So, carry on with the plan. I can guarantee you that I will be watching the build.
Quite literally my dream car since I was a little kid. Yeah, a left hand drive would be nice, but I'll never say no to a right hand drive. I've been looking for a HJ45, left drive, diesel for YEARS. Never have I found one affordable. :-( (On a good note, I was able to check off one bucket list item, a 1968 Kaiser/Jeep Gladiator.)
That's like finding a needle in 2 hay stacks. I looked for one of these for damn near a yr a few yrs back and couldn't find one in good shape. Looks like you got yourself a winner.
Wow, been lurking for a while but gotta say nice ride. I used to have a ‘74 FJ40 with a small block 383 stroker. A true “Chevota”. I miss that truck and how it would make the windows in my girl friends house rattle when I came to pick her up. That’s what her dad said anyway. 🤣I also had the exact winch on the front. Warn 8000 upright. Never let me down. Love the channel.
Very cool. I owned and drove a 1965 FJ-45 for 12 years. It was A close comparison to my WW2 Jeep (1943 GPW) and my g.granpa’s horse & buggy. Gas mileage varied from 10 to 12 MPG. Due to its great length (it was a long bed) it was not as good off road as my stock FJ-40. But it brought smiles to everyone who saw it, and I was beseeched by off roaders who wanted to buy it from me. They finally won out. Don’t let them get yours. So cool!
I only subscribed for the Alaska and Canada part as I one day wants to explore the area myself. Thought that it was just another travel series/channel and that I would unsubscribe when the Alaska - Canada series were over. But now that you have introduced the 40 series, I might just stay a tad longer :) A few thoughts on the cruiser. 1. The transmission and transfer shouldn't whine like that unless some gears have been changed to straight cut gears. The seal between the gearbox and transfer often starts to leak after it gets really old. Then your oil can migrate to the transfer or get pumped up in the H55F. Either way, one will get empty and run dry, so be on a lookout for this. I have experienced both scenarios. 2. Why gasoline? You now have quadrupled your fuel expenditure. The original H engine is a reliable engine, just add an oil cooler as it doesn't have one. 3. I could probably help you get a cheap 2H engine from Scandinavia, you already got the sought after H55F, so you are set. Both the H and 2H are a real slug, but they do really wake up with a turbo. I have had an HJ60 with the 2H and now have an HJ61 with the 12H-T and they do really move and use little fuel. I get about 25mpg on long hauls driving between 80 and 110 kph. Ohh, and the sweet, sweet engine purr. And the turbo whistle. 4. It should be capable offroad with the low 1st gear and low range, at least that is no problem with big tires and the 2H/12H-T engine. Do you have original locking differentials? 5. Do an undercoat and keep doing them!
Not from the Down Under but I shall admit you have a great ride. I've seen videos from Down Yonder with lesser quality builds and you got a top-notch job my friend
Okay, so just to be clear, I'm not a Toyota guy (Jeeper thru and thru), but the Beast is awesome. Absolutely you should build it into an Overlander so you and the ladies can hit the trails. If you can leave the trailer at home, your fuel mileage (it may vary...) shouldn't be any worse than the big SUV. Looking forward to your continued adventures and build videos. Safe Travels and God Bless!
I noticed you've kept the New South Wales plates on the old girl, there were good old truck the old Cruiser. I use own a bj40 short wheel base with a 6 cylinder 4 litre diesel wish I still had her👍🤙
Nice one fella... Ya now driving on the right side of the truck:D Even got the NSW plates. Good to see an Aussie troopy getting the respect!!! Well done
cool ride, I wish Toyota sold the stripped down rugged version of land cruisers they sell in Australia here in the US. I like the 200 series cruisers but its too fancy and wide for offroading and overloading, I might get a 100 series LC and build it up, not too wide but still reliable.
Nice troopy!! I like your video too.. i was wondering what is the paint code you used for the front part of the car.. It looks a bit richer/darker, i love it.
I love that beast. Personally, I would have the 5th gen up for sale and drive in awesome nostalgia. Your fan base will take a huge jump if you do change over to it.
Yeah, the audience loves to see something new, whether it is old or new, as long as it is new content. That is why other youtubers who have expensive sports cars find themselves needing to buy more and more. Basically, the audience increases with new content. This will bring a lot of new content than the travels even. Just parking this at Walmart will have many people coming to talk to you. It is quite a show stopper.
Would be very cool to outfit for the long haul...... but.... like a few others have said, there is a very real reason the 4Runners & such are so popular.. I picked up a huge Unimog a couple of years ago. While it is an absolute Tank in the traction arena with 41" tires and driveline built for railroad heavy strength, it is very frequently too large for many forest roads & similar. It is loud, ruggedly uncomfortable and gets heavily scratched op and breaks many branches. That said, I Friggin LOVE it. Mywife, a bit less.....
Were you able to find a different bell housing to convert the Chevy 350 to the factory Transmission, or did you replace the transmission and transfer case also ? It`s all easier said than done,,,,thats for sure,,,,Lol ! I wouldnt hesitate in taking the beast on your next adventure. It has a new motor, and the suspension`s built like a tank. Will you be transferring the accessories from the 4 Runner to Troopy, or buy all new accessories ? ( Refrigerator, Solar Panel, Air Compressor, etc. )
Had the chance to get an fj40 for my first car a litre while ago it was a shell and my dad and I where going to fix it up.... but by the time I had decided get it it had sold... it’s now my dream car.... wish I had gotten that thing now
@@lboggan417 I grew up in the Western Desert of Australia's Northern Territory dude, one of the most remote places in the world, learnt to drive in Troopy, aged 7 or 8. You want plenty power in the bush, get you out of trouble, blast through mud, water, or sand, high top speed allows you to glide over the top of deeply corrugated, unsealed roads, which haven't been graded for years. Power and reliability are the two most crucial characteristics of a good bush vehicle. Toyota know what they're doing, the current Aussie 70 series Landcruiser has a 4.5L V8 turbo diesel, which produces 200kW of power (severely detuned 268 horses, easily capable of 400 chipped) and 650Nm of torque, soon to be replaced by a V6 with even more power. Seems you don't know what you're talking about.
Going to be awesome! Definitely need to ditch that air filter configuration and get it snorkled though! Also, is it me, or does it need some rear fender flares to match the front?
Agreed on both counts! The snorkel will be a challenge to pipe from the intake to a custom box but doable. Sackwear just recently had one made for his. The flares look like they will have to be custom as well since I can't find any for the long wheel base (at least not in the US).
What do you think? Should we build it out and hit the road in the Beast?
Very NICE! Here in Brazil we have the Toyota Bandeirante, its almos a 45 series, but with Diesel engine and even a truck
Yes. Keep the trailer. Use the topper as a second bedroom for your daughter.
Yes go for it !!!
i bought a 90 Montero and plan on building it out.
Yes!
No questions about it !!!

So jealous! Always loved the FJ45's and the fact yours has a POP TOP!!!
You definitely need to build it out.
That troopy is awesome even in Australia a fj40 in that condition is rare. The only thing I would've done would be put a turbo diesel in it
4bt troopy combo seems like ah real nice setup for adventure seeing
Build that beast!! Can’t wait to see it down the road!! 👍🏻👍🏻

That’s sick!!! Still has the Australian number plates
Love the NSW number plate guys ( big love from Sydney, NSW, AUSTRALIA)
Nice one fella... Ya now driving on the right side of the truck:D Even got the NSW plates. Good to see an Aussie troopy getting the respect!!! Well done
Thanks, Vik!
i love that it still has the NSW rego sticker in the window
It's still got that Aussie rego sticker, remember getting those in the mail. Nice little touch
That is what you call a BA Troopy! BUILD IT OUT!
What a cool rig. Been looking to buy an FJ40 and to me the Beast is like striking gold. Looking forward to seeing what mods/additions you do to it.

Damn that's sweet. The steering wheel is even on the correct side ;)
