- One of the most renowned Gregorian Chant melodies is "Dies Irae." It was traditionally credited to Thomas of Celano (who passed away in 1260), but is now typically attributed to an anonymous Franciscan from the same era. This piece is inspired by Zephaniah 1:14-16 and reflects on the concept of the final judgment. It used to be a part of the Mass of the Dead and the Office of the Dead. Today, it is included in the Liturgia Horarum during the last week of Ordinary time (34th week), emphasizing the approaching Advent season and the Second Coming of Christ. In the United States, it continues to be used in the Office of the Dead and on the Feast of All Souls (November 2nd).
Some people have expressed discomfort with the somber tone of the initial verses of the hymn, but despite its sobering nature, there is a sense of hope later in the composition. The idea of eternal judgment can be intimidating for us as sinners, but as Christians, we find solace in the knowledge that we have Christ as our Savior.

This is the most incredible Gregorian Chant on the entire internet. IMHO, of course. The original Latin has actually inspired me to make some word art with it. When I do something like that, I always ensure that everything is absolutely correct in the translation. That's where I might have a little suggestion...check it if you like.
"Solvet saeculum in favilla" should probably read "Solvet saeclum in favilla".
Also, it might have been a little difficult to read the old english font...but it's "Gere curam mei finis"...I made out the first word as "Geie".

@@christophertaylor9100True. I gather that was all in Latin, as imposing and unintelligible as that must have been. I mean, as propaganda, as crowd control, as rule-by-fear, it was wonderfully effective for centuries.
I am not religious and I can appreciate the beauty of this. I can just imagine having a rough week in the fields and just spending a few hours in a temple listening to this as a way to reset.

When I was 18 I got to go to Italy, where my mom's mom's side is from. We went to several churches, and massive basilicas including Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome. I was the only Catholic on the trip and I got lost from the group in Saint Peter's because I was overwhelmed by the art, beauty, history, and feeling in deep peace. They had priests singing monk chants that echoed throughout the entire basilica with the power of a storm, but it was tranquil and calming. I will occasionally listen to monk chants just to feel myself back there, as an 18 year old kid standing in the largest church on earth with beautiful chants echoing around me and staring up at the church's massively decorated ceilings. I also feel that calm when I have been near lakes or rivers, not inside something man-made too. It's a really bizarre, but awesome feeling when you can let go of what holds you back and feel that at peace. Maybe that's why Jesus said "Peace be with you" all the time to people, because how often are we truly at peace? I really hope that is what Heaven is like...

The old chants and hymns written in Latin are speaking to God and Heaven directly. The modern day music doesn't do that, it's just intended to keep you from getting bored in church which defeats the entire purpose. If you're bored you shouldn't be there.

I too appreciate the translation. The music is beautiful, I never thought of putting a soldier in the image before on occasions I have heard this chant. Reading the translation in this context made me think of the promise made in so many holy wars, fight for my god and when you die god will reward you. In this case with a life which no priest has no more direct knowledge than that of the warrior. In a way it makes me sad, with the religious components to some of the major conflicts in the world today. It just makes me sad, it does not inspire, giving life for an empty promise is such a waste. Better to live in peace and experience the joy of love, loving a special person, caring for a family member. Challenging the human people in power to provide an environment where this is possible in both the short term and for the very long term. This enables true art and beauty, even those who sing this ancient song of war.
I am more convinced by the day seeing what is going on that the end of times are closer than we realise

It's odd, music has had a very strong influence on my life. Specifically gregorian chants, madrigals, and latin pieces were always my favorite in choir. Never grew up as worshipping any religion. My love for the music and interest in the weaponry/armor of the period led me to formally studying history. Now it genuinely may make me a religious man. Im not sure if it comes from romanticizing history, the values of judeo-christian beliefs, or a desire for a bygone era or just the love of the music. The simple fact that latin music and chants had such a profound impact to spark my desire to study history is proof that culture is intrinsically linked with the human experience and you don't have to follow any religion or ascribe to a belief system to appreciate and respect amazing art.
History is important, a feature of our present time. That I find very sad is that there are so many lunatics at present re-writing history to conform to their personal kind of crazy

I remember reading from an article not long ago that this Gregorian Chant used to heal people in ancient time, and not just healing in a spiritual sense, but actual healing. Its to the point that a certain Emperor feared the power the church held, he banned this chant and burned all books and knowledge related to this. After centuries, the gregorian chant made its return, but the knowledge that allowed a person to chant and heal the ailed is lost, making it just a simple chant no different from others. I believed its to do with how a person does the chant, that technique is lost to us.
Maybe its just fiction, who knows though.
There is a white paper published out of germany that was conducted by german nurses in an ICU unit that showed their patients recovered 40% faster when gregorian chants were played 12 hrs. a day. G.D truly heals his faithful children!!
