- Hello everybody! I bought a dozen of duck eggs from an Asian online supermarket called Weee! and incubated them. Four weeks later, nine little ducklings hatched! Feel free to ask any questions in the comments!

I’m sorry for the long delay! First we had the whole hatching experience with the duckling, and then my daughter’s guinea pig got very seriously ill. We were due to take her to the vet yesterday at 2, but she died before we could get here there:😥
We all stayed up with the egg on Friday night until ab 1 or 1:30 a.m. By that time, I had made a larger opening in the shell, yin case he was too big to peck his way out. Even after I did the larger opening then, we could see him moving, but he wasn’t coming out. Finally, we all went to bed!
At 6 a.m., Sat. a.m., I went up to see if he had made any further progress. I almost had a heart attack on the spot! Apparently the cat had gotten into the bedroom and when the duckling hatched, seeing & hearing a little bird on the other side of a plastic window had really caught her eye. Evidently, she knocked the incubator off the table it was on (it’s very lightweight), and onto the floor😱! In so doing, the lid had come off and there was water from the humidifier everywhere!! I think all that commotion must have frightened the cat off. I near-DIED!!! I went to look for the egg or any duckling beneath the upside-down incubator. Nothing! I freaked! I was sure the cat had eaten him😩! I looked around and then I saw a duckling on the carpeting right next to my foot! It was a miracle I hadn’t stepped on him! I picked him up, and he was completely cold and limp! I started screaming, “OMG, he’s dead!!!” again & again. I tried to tuck him in my sports bra because it’s a good, quick “temporary incubator” of sorts, and I’ve kept chicks warm in there in the past.
He was too cold and limp, though, and his neck just hung down. By this point , I was beyond hysterical! I cupped the poor baby in both my hands and began heavily breathing on him with my mouth open for the added humidity. I just panted-breathed very heavily and furiously, begging God to somehow save him even though it seemed hopeless.
After about 5-10 minutes of this, I felt the faintest movement! I wasn’t sure if it was me, my imagination, or the baby duck, and I was afraid (in case it was the last option), to stop doing what I was doing. I kept going. After several more minutes, I felt more movement, this time clearly from the baby duck! I was in shock! I was dumbfounded! I was already convinced we had done everything only for him to die! But here he was making a few movements!
I kept going for quite a while then.
Long story short, our prayers were answered and we resuscitated him!!!
Later that morning, we brought him over for the woman who found the egg in her garden, two weeks earlier, to see. Then we headed straight to the Wildlife Rehab with him. We felt he was safest there, and also knew he would have lots of adopted duckling siblings to grow up with this way.
What an experience!!!🥵. That whole 24 hours took at least ten years off my life!

I saw on another UA-cam video mentioned that duck eggs require 10 minutes of daily “cooling time” outside of the incubator. Maybe it helps with hatching? Has anyone else heard of this?
I have tried doing that before but I personally didn't really notice any difference in the hatch rate. The cooling time is simulating the time period when the hen leaves her nest (to grab a drink of water, eat food, or for a quick swim). It really all comes down to the eggs and consistency in the incubation method in the end. Hope this helps!
I am amazed when people hatch chickens, ducks or quail from store bought eggs. Normally most commercially produced egg producers don't keep roosters or drake's in with their hens. They will lay eggs without a male, they just won't be fertile.

Hello! With duck eggs, it's easier to spot development on day 4-7. During the first three days it is kind of hard to tell so just wait a little longer! By the 7th day, you should definitely be able to see the embryo along with the veins. Personally, I like to candle on the 7th day and take out the eggs that haven't developed or have died. To do this, how do you make sure on how to get fresh eggs that are still fresh enough to hatch? The chicken eggs in the store are often 2 months old buy the time you buy them. So this seems like it would be helpful to know which brands have really fresh eggs and the best chance to work?
Hi, good question! It is ultimately a hit or miss as you really can't tell which brands are fresher as each batch differs as well. However, I had success with almost every fertile brand-- Rock Island, fertile eggs from Trader Joe's and Japanese markets have all well for me (though one of the dozens I bought seemed to be older so only one egg out of twelve showed development). If you want the absolute freshest eggs, I would recommend purchasing from local sellers/farms (though they are a lot more expensive). Also just fyi, eggs that have been kept for a while still have a chance to develop and hatch so don't be discouraged! The oldest egg I successfully hatched was around a month old and was even kept in the fridge for a while. I hope this helps and goodluck :)

They didn’t get these eggs from the supermarket - which supermarkets do you know put elastic bands around the carton? And secondly, egg farms won’t have a drake anywhere near the layers. They are misleading (actually down right lying to) you. You won’t hatch a supermarket egg, they aren’t fertile.

Hello, the incubator I use is the Janoel 24, but any other reputable incubator should work just fine. The eggs I have were purchased from Weee though you could purchase some off of ebay to hatch. Wish you the best of luck!

Unfortunately the seller I purchased my incubator from no longer sells the Janoel 24, but any other reputable incubator like the janoel 12, nurture right, magicfly all should work fine. Just try to avoid the cheap asian incubators, as those tend to flunctuate in temperature and humidity easily. Hope this helps!

Thanks! Yes, they were previously refrigerated when I received them. Refrigerated fertile eggs typically still have a chance of hatching, though lower than non refrigerated. Hope this helps!

Hi, we are incubating an abandoned duck egg. Very unfortunately, No idea of the age when we found it, but guessed it to be ~12 days. We also guessed it was ready for lockdown when the air pocket appeared to have gotten big enough (~1/3 of the egg), and he looked too big to move much any more. I think we were right because we took it off the turner and could watch the egg wiggling that very night...
We’d bought a Kebonnix incubator and are following the protocols we’ve researched as well as we know how. Trying to keep humidity close to 70-75% now that he is in lockdown. Our current concern is that it will have been two days this afternoon since he went into lockdown. Since the first evening, we have noticed a very slim hairline crack-line down near the wrong side of the egg. The egg wiggled a bit Monday evening (1st night) and a bit more, I would say, on Tuesday evening (2nd night).
Today is Wednesday. Like I said, we do not know the exact age of the egg. This afternoon will be 48 hours since we put him into lockdown. We don’t want to rush in rashly, but we also don’t want to neglect him if he needs help. How long should we play this “Wait & See” game? We do not even know if he might later have pipped through the air hole on the other side, since he is in lockdown and we can’t open the incubator. When we shine a flashlight through the incubator plastic, it appears the air pocket is growing a bit more. We don’t see a beak poked though it , though maybe if the beak weren’t close enough to the shell, we could miss that?
We want to candle the egg better, to check where things stand, but if we opened the incubator, it would completely throw off the humidity level (and to a lesser extent the temperature). We have read that this can cause fatal shrink-wrapping instantly. We are also terrified of this “shrink-wrapping” occurring if we absolutely had to intervene.
Do you have any recommendations you could offer us? We have never done this before, and we are so scared of blowing it after all this time & effort. We don’t want to neglect him, but we also don’t want to intervene prematurely.
Oh, we are not hearing any chirping wounds from him, although he definitely moves more when we play these sounds for him on our phone.
My primary concern is that hairline crack. Can I just let that be, or is there a deadline now, by which time he needs to get out? My other major concern is how to assist (if need be) without doing damage since assistance would require me taking him out of the incubator (the lid has the heat and the humidity regulator, and the lid would have to be removed to get into him).

Hello, great job saving the egg! It sounds like a lot of care was put into it :) I will try to help you as much as I can! The eggs I've incubated tend to start wiggling two or three days before internal pip. Personally (along with quite a few others), I think that it is okay to open the incubator at lockdown as long as the humidity doesn't drop below 60%. Since I open the incubator pretty frequently during lockdown because I am usually hatching call duck eggs (which are typically harder to hatch and require more assistance), I always place a wet paper towel into the incubator so that the humidity maintains. I would say you can go ahead and quickly take the egg out to candle it. It is absolutely okay, as ducks often leave their nests for shorts periods of time when they are incubating their eggs.
Look for any internal pips in the air cell. If there aren't any pips and the duckling is constantly pushing against the membrane/having difficulty breathing or even blowing bubbles inside of the liquid, I would open the shell a little and slightly open the membrane so that it can breathe. If that is what you do, make sure to maintain the humidity around 70% so that it doesn't shrinkwrap. Since the exact date of the egg isn't known, I would try to candle it every 12 hours in case it needs assistance.
If the duckling neither internally pipped nor is pushing against the membrane, looks for bruise spots like the one at 2:51 in the video. But make sure to open the membrane a little bit so that it can breathe. Also, shrinkwrapping isn't as fatal as it sounds. As long as proper assistance is given and the duckling has air to breathe, there shouldn't be any problems :)
If none of those are the case, I would wait a little longer 12-24 hours, and then go based off of then.
There are no such things as deadlines when incubating eggs. There was once when I completely messed up the calendar of the eggs I was incubating, so I had no idea when everything was supposed to happen. As soon as I saw the duckling taking deep breathes and struggling inside the membrane I opened the membrane a little bit so that it can breathe properly. It ended up hatching on it's own, and is doing super well! For chirping, I typically don't hear them until they have internally pipped so don't worry yet.
For the hairline crack, I haven't heard of that happening before, so I am not completely sure what could have caused it. Definitely take the egg out to see whats going on. It might be caused by the duckling externally pipping, or the duckling kicked the egg too hard. I am not sure what it looks like so I cannot say for sure. If what you see is cracks leading up to a small hole, then that is probably an external pip. Open the area just a tiny bit so that the duckling has more air.
Egg hatching is always a very exciting yet terrifying process. In summary, definitely take out the egg from the incubator quickly, and check the hairline crack/candle the air cell. Try not to keep it out for longer than 30 minutes. When you take out the egg, put the lid back on and keep the incubator running so that the temperature doesn't drop. If and when you open the egg, and there are bright red and thick veins, it is not ready to come out, so just pop it back into the incubator and wait 12-24 hours longer then check again. It is for sure a good sign that the duckling is moving when he/she hears sounds.

OMG, thank you sooooo much! We are really so ignorant when it comes to farm animals and birds especially. A lady on the other side of town had found it abandoned on top of her mulch. She waited ~36 hours after finding it, but no parent ever showed back up. Since I have successfully raised a multitude of orphaned squirrels over the years, as well as some already-hatched robins and sparrows, I volunteered to try and see if it was even viable, after another wildlife person, and many neighbors, told her to just leave it and forget it. Boy, did I get more than I bargained for! I never dreamed it could be so complicated with all the temperature settings, humidity settings (and trying to maintain the humidity levels!), what you can and cannot do, and just the gazillion things you could accidentally do that would kill it! I feel like I’ve aged ten years in two weeks!!!

Those who help them out are real heroes. Incubating eggs is a very difficult and intricate process, but the ducklings and chicks that hatch out make it 100% worth it! I myself am still in the process of improving/perfecting my incubation technique.
Personally I think the incubation process is only a very rough guideline of what should happen. There are always ones that are slower or faster, and that is completely natural. Nature doesn't have a clock. That being said, it is not expected especially if the date is uncertain. I have had ducklings pip a few days late, while some pipped right at the start of lockdown. Typically, I actually like to start lockdown based off of the progress inside the egg. For example once the eggs start to rock, internally pip, etc. What happens most often for me is that the duckling internally pips one or two days before the hatch date. Assuming that the egg you have is around 24-27 days old, the egg should be close to internal pip.
My advice for you right now would be to take the egg out of the incubator and candle the egg/check the exterior for the crack you mentioned. If there are no bruises, internal pips, or struggling visible, then I would wait a little longer (12-24 hours). If you can't exactly see what's going on inside the shell, poke a tiny little hole. From there you can see if the membrane whether tightly wrapped onto the duckling (shrink wrap), in the process of pipping, chewing on the membrane, etc. Please do keep me updated so I can give you further advice! :)

I am scared to death I’m going to kill this little guy one way or another😰! I have read that they should read be turned because they have gotten into position, and that turning them will upset all those efforts. It is lying longways on its side, though. If I were to candle it, I’d need to turn it upright. Would that detach him or move him from the position he worked so hard to get into? I wish you lived in NJ! I feel like this poor little thing is dependent on me and I am so ignorant as to how to properly care for him.
I also worry how I will manage to keep the humidity over 70% while working on him. It is plugged in in a bedroom right now to keep him safe from our pets. If I move it into the bathroom, I can turn the shower on hot which will steam up the room. But I’d need to unplug it to get it down to the bathroom, and that trip down the hall alone could send the humidity or temperature too low...

How fast are these dudes growing? Because I see ducklings in one clip and then full grown ducks in another. Are those the same ducks?
They grow at a tremendous rate within the first few weeks. However, the full grown ducks you saw were ones that I hatched previously, about 2-3 weeks older 😊
So after 4 weeks you were able to still hatch them? So fertility is still good for at least 4 weeks??
Hello, sorry for the confusion. What I meant was I incubated them for four weeks. I have hatched eggs that sat in the refrigerator 2-3 weeks and although the chances of a successful hatch is quite low, there is still a possibility of the eggs hatching. It's just that it is not very likely many will make it to lockdown or even develop. I have also seen multiple people hatch out ducklings/chicks that are past four weeks old, it's just that the hatch rate wasn't high. Hope this helps!
Can you do this with any non refrigerated supermarket egg?
Hello, the ones I incubated were actually refrigerated! Refrigerated eggs have a lower chance of hatching but it is still possible (it also depends on how long they sat for). I have actually hatched eggs that were refrigerated for 3 weeks! If you plan to incubate supermarket eggs you should definitely check the fertility first by looking at the yolk. Ones that are not fertile will only have a small white dot, while fertile ones will have a small dot that looks like a bullseye. Brands that say they are fertile have given me pretty nice hatch rates, but sometimes they don't say it on their packaging so you might have to check for yourself. Hope this helps!
Felicity is misleading you. These aren’t supermarket eggs at all. Supermarket eggs aren’t fertile.
Fertile eggs from duck farms who have drakes do sell fertile eggs and yes, the eggs may be refrigerated. Eggs need to settle at room temperature for 24 hours at least before incubation.

Hello! There are two ways-- either to open one up and check the yolk for fertility or to just incubate the egg and see if there is any development. If you are purchasing supermarket eggs, fertility is usually stated on the packaging (for ex; rock island). If you plan on opening the egg, the way to check for fertility is to look for the white spot on the egg yolk. All egg yolks will have a white spot, but fertile ones will have a bullseye appearance while non fertile ones will just have a plain dot. I hope this helps! Hello! It really depends on the eggs. First off, the biggest deciding factor for hatching supermarket eggs is the fertility of the eggs. You can check the fertility of the eggs by looking at the yolk. Ones that are not fertile will only have a small white dot, while fertile ones will have a small dot that looks like a bullseye.
If they are fertile, the chances of hatching them are still significantly low, but not zero. If the eggs have been refrigerated for too long they might not hatch. Also, since the eggs were washed before selling, it removes a protective layer outside the shell which makes it easier for bacteria to enter the egg and possibly kill the embryo.
I have incubated many supermarket duck eggs but this brand was the only one that was fertile so far. As for chicken eggs, I have found that many are actually fertile, but chances of hatching aren't high. Same for quails.

I think the eggs would need to be less than about 10 days old, right? How to know how long eggs have been sitting in storage? I think maybe you’d have better luck and higher hatch rate with duck eggs from a farmer’s market setting.
@@aminad6903 For sure! The fresher the better especially for hatching eggs. There is not really a way to know how long the eggs have been sitting, but the eggs they sell should be relatively fresh. Also, the eggs don't necessarily have to be less than 10 days old to hatch, but the longer they sit, the lower the chances of it hatching. Why there are black ducks and yellow ducks?
There are many different breeds and patterns, yellow ducklings typically grow up to be fully white (pekin, white layer, etc.) The black/brown ducklings may grow up to be khakis, golden hybrids, etc. Hope this helps!

Hello, good question! Before the eggs is formed and laid by the chicken or duck, a male (rooster or drake) mates with the hen which fertilizes the eggs. When the egg forms and the hen lays the eggs, they come out fertile. It is impossible to fertilize eggs once they come out, so the egg must be already fertile in order to hatch out ducklings or chicks. Hope this helps! :)
Most eggs from the store are from locations where no breeding happens, it’s very unlikely eggs from the store would be fertile.
Free range eggs from store have a much higher success rate as they're kept with roosters most of the time. Obviously barn battery or factory hens won't be kept with roosters. I'm guessing it's a similar story for ducks... Love this video so super helpful!!!!

Although commercial farms typically get rid of all the roosters, there are still companies that purposely keep them in to sell and advertise fertile eggs. Please do some research before making assumptions.

Lockdown typically starts 3 days before hatching. If you spot any internal pips before lockdown, I recommend you to go into lockdown immediately as the chick/duckling is preparing to hatch. Hope this helps!

Hello! lockdown is the last three days of incubation when the eggs prepare to hatch. During this time, the humidity should be increased to around 50-70% so that the chicks/ducklings inside the eggs don't get shrinkwrapped (which makes it very difficult for them to hatch out successfully without assistance). It is recommended to refrain from opening the incubator as much as possible so that the humidity doesn't drop down. Hope this helps!

@@hiccupandcheese in any egg industry. They need chickens, ducks or turkeys for example to lay eggs. They don't need the males so they kill them by the millions

Haha, you are typically not killing life every time you consume eggs. Commercial eggs are typically infertile, so there is no chance of life. Even if they were fertile, you would still have to incubate it to possibly hatch it.
