This video exemplifies why the middle-to-latter portion of your beginner weightlifting program is so wonderful. The low hang snatch days FORCES taller lifters (like myself) to re-evaluate the start position. Low hang snatch reps at 70-75kg feel powerful and sharp because that low hang forces me into that parallel hips/shoulders over the bar position. The same snatch weights from the ground, using my original lower hip position, feel like 2 ton dog shit.😂 love this video! Thank you for this!
Sika Crew took the strongest Giraffe and made it also the fastest Giraffe in the Game. Insightful coaching! Zack is gigantic and what you guys say makes a lot of sense to me, will keep that in mind when my Long Legged Larries ask for advise
@@Yokatosh Yeah bro, same here. I figured out my squat, I have decent mobility, I'm just weak. But at the pull in the snatch is where my leverages suck the most.
Aryamnov always teaches knees out, not for the bar path, but he believes it gives better power in the hips. Oh and also to be able to stick your back in, instead of outside...
@@sikastrength just what I learned during training with him for a week in Belarus and off and on for two years online.🤷🏼♀️. Nothing works for everybody.
Excellent content. I noticed your cues to Zack in the prior videos and was curious about them and was also trying them in my training, given that I'm also a 6'4" giraffe. 😄 Thanks for clarifying and sharing. 👍
Can Zack reach a good power position with straight arms in the snatch? 6'7" wingspan at 6'4" you need a longer bar. It's good to see you helping out but one point you did not address was the bar swing especially on his snatches. The Japanese coach mentioned Zack and Clarence have a terrible bar loop in their current pull technique. Clarence used to lift perfectly many years ago. If you could communicate keeping the hips "silent" during the third pull Zack will probably snatch 160 with no improvements in strength. This part seems most difficult for most lifters. Maximum aggression with no lateral bar displacement.
I agree but man 160kg is huge pretty much for anybody. That is heavy weight. We talk the snatch being a technique based movement and that is true but for a 160kg snatch you need to be in top shape. You need to still be strong.
Yeah his at the hip position is fine, he has a tendency to lean back too early from the knee causing the swing but once he doesn't do it his extension is much better.
As another 6’4 giraffe, I push my knees out a bit just to be in a better position at the knee. With my femurs, to get a vertical shin position at the knee with knees back means my back angle is pretty horizontal. This makes it hard to keep full foot pressure through the second pull as I’m opening my hips wayy up during extension. Which can also lead to bar humping rather than getting to a good power position and driving through the legs.
One thing zack has taught on his channel and on his patreon is knees out, so its interesting to see that you guys have differing opinions. Although i never liked knees out either and knees back felt way better.
I'm 115kg, 198cm, bit over twenty percent bf, year and a half in the gym, 4 weeks into a 5 by 5 novice linear progression, things feel very dialled in. I've always done loads of bodyweight and kettlebell squats plus mountain biking from early teens so I have big quads and until recently a relatively detrained upper body. But my point is, at 198 cm, by far the most comfortable of the foundational exercises for me is the squat. My theory as to why? Limb to torso length ratios and the right kid of hip joints (is it deep or shallow?). I have squatted au natural and my wedding vegetables more than grazed the floor. I'm talking centimetres between linoleum and sphincter. And I'm 198cm and only recently started heavy high bar back squatting. Because I'm stubby but tall. Like how some people can be lanky but short. I think saying lanky lifters as opposed to tall lifters could be more accurate in my lay opinion.
it really sucks to be that tall for weightlifting. Zack's lifts looks so unstable compared to others in the video who all seem have a less lengthy build. And I don't think its his skills, it's just the way his body is built that makes everything looks off.
I recently found out that the set up of vardanian in the snatch was rhe optimal for me, he started with the hips super low and then he lift his ass to paralel at the same time he extend the elbows i think it really works for me, im 6 ft 1.85 meters
While I’m only 5’11’’ I’m slim and not terribly well proportioned for weightlifting. You can argue I’m either underweight, or over-tall. I’ve got quite a long back, which is quite strong in relation to my legs, and I’ve been playing around constantly to try to find the exact balance between all the possible variables in my start position. It’s such a fine line.
@@ev1bl Oh, there’s definitely a lack of muscle and strength. But I’m not talking about weight on the bar, and relative percentages are entirely individual. I’m just speaking from a technical perspective, about slowly narrowing in my perfect technique. I hit it a few times a session, and it instantly feels easier. The rest of my lifts in any given session are just ever so slightly “off”. I make the lifts, they just lack the perfect pop, speed, and solidity of those few, accidentally, perfect lifts. I can’t quite pin down, what aspect of timing, or positioning, or both, that I’m doing differently, by accident, on those lifts that instantly feel perfect. I’m slowly narrowing in on it, they’re getting more frequent, I just can’t quite do it on demand. But yeah, more strength/ muscle, would be handy.
Can you go over wrist position for clean, jerk, and snatch in long wingspan lifters? I'm collar to collar in the snatch and cannot figure out what to do to maintain a neutral wrist, massive over extension and radial deviation when overhead.
Really interesting. What about keeping an upright torso in clean/front squats if I have long femurs and have trouble getting my knees far over my toes (my ass gets too far back and I'm not able to actively use all the dorsiflexion I could use)
Just curious. For snatch and clean and jerk do you ever actively cue an aggressive fast initial pull? Or do you go as fast as is necessary for the right technique to be maintained?
This isn't just for tall lifters... And some of us watching are so untalented that it doesn't matter how much we work on technique, it's all the same...
Could you talk about Clarence and what he does good/bad. I have a feeling we don't talk about his technique just because he hits big numbers and it "just works for him", but I feel like his technique is kinda atrocious in some spots lol. I'm a nobody though so ye

I'm not tall or a weightlifter but I'm still gonna watch this goddamnit
Very insightful coaching lads, hopefully helps Zach hit some more big numbers
For sure! We'd love to see a 140 again!
super super valuable video

The worst thing is that I have bad proportions and I'm not even tall.
😭
I get jealous any time i see a person with a really short leg to torso ratio. Imy leverages aren't even that bad but i wish i could squat like toshiki
5’6” with long arms and legs… fuck good for jiu jitsu shit for lifting weights lol

Same haha. I'm only 168cm but my wingspan is almost 180cm. I need to go almost to the collars to get the bar in the right position for the snatch.
Everyone crying in the comments saying they have bad proportions LOL

I talked to andrei about this and he said it's not for everyone but it might be a worth a try.

These personalized cues are so helpful. I don't need to be told to keep balanced or lift heavier or faster. Those are obvious.
I’m only 5”7 but I have weird proportions. This video was actually really helpful
Am tall. Am watching. 👀
I think yury zacharavich has probably the best snatch technique I’ve seen for longer limbed fellas

I'm glad you didn't change anything about what Zack does to an elite level, aka making weird lifting faces at the bottom of the squat.

What technical model would you recommend to refer to? Where could I find it?
Can we stop saying tall lifters? Say long femur lifters, where it's more crucial. Lasha is tall but has a more conventional pull.
Word police 🤦

Define tall, numbers
Long legs, long arms, short torso
In weightlifting? 5'9"
Zach's 6'6
In weightlifting 5’9 in basketball 6’6”

Is there specific cues (outside of loose arms) to stop arm bend in the Snatch? Almost subconsciously happening during second pull of snatch
Can you go over wrist position for clean, jerk, and snatch in long wingspan lifters? I'm collar to collar in the snatch and cannot figure out what to do to maintain a neutral wrist, massive over extension and radial deviation when overhead.
What if your tall with short ass arms compared to your height😩
First we lift until we have reached our peak and then we decide it’s time to learn how to lift.
I am a freaky bitch, thank you
Should the bar be touching the shins in the starting position?

You said knees out lengthens femur. From the side view knees out artificially shortens femurs tho...
