there are countries other than the US or UK ;-;
I'm curious, would NMBR 9 have ended up higher, lower, or about the same on this list if they hadn't named it number 9? ;)
@@SV-yo6nq 190+ countries, list of 10 games... :'D
I just know Pentago among them for years and this game is good.
The Duke is A Number One
"In Azul, which is Portuguese for Sagrada..." You got me WAAAY off guard 😂😂😂 I lost it
Adam could make a top 10 reasons my wife had an affair video and I would still love it.
Do it Adam for the people
I’d rather see “How WWE Should Have Booked Your Wife’s Affair”, personally.
ayo
WRITE THAT DOWN
If I'm honest, nothing beats Go, its rules are the simplest ever yet the game that arises from those rules is so incredibly deep and beautiful, it's everything I love about abstract strategy.
Love Blokus. Such a great puzzle game, trying to make your pieces fit while trying to block your opponents at the same time.
Can we get a top ten of game pieces you’ll want to eat but can’t
Yeah, that's ridiculous. Any piece can be eaten...
And than they made a chocolatier version of Azul. They're not even trying to hide that they want to trick people into eating them.
Yinsh is such a beautifully solid, thought-provoking game. I'd love to see Yinsh tournaments like chess has... and no, I'm not saying this because I'm my game group's undefeated Yinsh champion....
Great list!
I love you guys, but my wallet is screaming "You're tearing me apart, Lisa!"
btw, the "azul is portuguese for sagrada" was/is/will always be gold!
oh hi mark
@@eric_welch oh hi doggy
I love the gipf games. Best two player abstract series out there.
Photosynthesis!!! A beautiful game in which you're trying to grow trees on an island. The sun shines light onto the trees and the more sunlight they get, the faster they grow. And the bigger the trees get, the bigger the shadow they cast onto the trees of the opponents next to it, thus preventing them to grow. But here's the catch: The sun rotates around the island, and when it is on the other side.. Hey presto! Your tree is in the shadow... A beautifully balanced strategy game.... Not just for two players, I might add... It even plays better with 3 or 4...
In honor of this video, never forget the classic Board Game Club comeback: "YOU'RE ABSTRACT!"
Thank you Adam for such a nice list of games!
The Duke looks fantastic, will definitely be picking that up.
Thanks for spreading the word. Abstracts rule! My favorite is Twixt. Old school also rules!
I'm also always a fan of Hive. I bought Hive Carbon as well for 3 or 4 player variants.
Hive has a 4 player variant?!? *goes on the internet*
@@arkonnen7 not officially, but we homebrew a Carbon vs OG Hive tag team match, or a 4 player free for all with the last queen standing winning.
It's a glorious mess but it's fun.
Another one to consider is Ingenious.
Good list and yet there are still so many games left off:
Onitama
Qwirkle, Crosswise, Tsuro, just to name a few
War chest !! You should try it ! More complex but sooo great
Pfft. Who would eat those Azul pieces?
Azul: Stained Glass of Sintra pieces on the other hand... Feed me more of those please.
If you don't have affinity for the 5x surface thing in Ctrl, The Climbers is a good alternative. If I'll go with Adam's way of describing games: The Climbers is part Jenga and a Money-in-the-Bank Ladder match.
Players first build a structure made up of wooden blocks of different sizes. Then the game commences where you use the blocks, your blocking piece, and your 2 ladders to get to and stay on top of the continuously built/unbuilt structure. There can be some small rules that can be fiddly and our group found that there's a negotiation aspect to it. You cannot win by brute force. You need help from others to stymie one player and find a way to stab your allies in the back. I like the tactile feel of the colorful and heavy wooden blocks of the game.
I love The Duke
Genuinely surprised Shobu isn't on this list. Easily my favorite abstract strategy.
if you watch the shobu video adam reveales he didnt play the game before making this video
Good job for Blokus even if the 2 players version is far better.
‘Azul’ means ‘blue’ in Spanish and Portuguese. Great video!
But the game name is a catch, while "azul" means blue, its the 4 firsts letters of "azulejo" which, for who's not portuguese/brazillian are the decorated "tiles" we put on floors and walls.
I'm spanish and I love this vídeo.
The Tak game turned out to be totally different than I imagined while reading the book. From reading the story, I expected something more similar to Go.
Thanks to all of these lists, if I had money, I'd have no money.
Also, I'd love to see what you think are the 10 best "classic" games.
Great list as always though Adam.
So, so funny Adam. I don’t laugh out loud at a lot of UA-cam but this had me doing just that.
Twice
Trax! My favorite game
5:47 You can pre-order it for it's release on November 14th of this year 🥳🥳🥳
Second comment I cannot agree more with tiny towns, but i think you need to try Mandala as a two player abstract, it is SO GOOD
Simpei is really fun and quick one. Tic tac toe on 2 levels.
I bought Pentago unopened for £10 in a charity shop in largs.
Funny, as some of those I really want to play. But the only one I have actually played is in fact Tiny Towns, and I wasn't that keen.
Great list thanks!
Out of curiousity, which one of the three edition of Azul do you prefer and why ?
There's four now haha. So much Azul! I would also love to know this!
1:03 I like this line. it's funny.
Hey! Love Tak! It's fantastic. Hence why I have a whole channel dedicated to tournament commentary, strategy guides, and more.
One issue with the video... the clips you showed at around 5:36 show a bunch of illegal moves. So it might confuse people who are unfamiliar with the game. Pieces may stack on top of each other, but only when moved there. New pieces must be placed on an empty space.
If you want to do any additional Tak content, let me know! I'd be happy to help.
have you ever heard of thrive!? its like chess, but pices envolve! and its beautiful! take a look!
I didn't get here expecting to be attacked about Kingkiller Chronicle like that. ._.
Also, great Portuguese lesson.
Almost perfect, just missing Shobu
You are happily tormenting my math mind with some of these games. The question is which ones of these will be most appropriate to demonstrate on MY channel?
I will do something different for once. The video was good and i liked the b-rolls
ADAM: They bought me a new tripod
My favorite abstract strategy board game of all time? Chess.
But if I had to pick a more recent one - i.e. one that isn't over a thousand years old and everybody knows about - I'd definitely go with Tsuro!
In the veins of Sagrada and Tiny Towns on this list, Tsuro technically has a theme, but that could be completely removed without affecting the "lay tile with lines, move on the line" mechanics.
Quick to teach, quick to play, and fun to play every time!
Agreed. Chess .
The Duke is A Number One
What are your thoughts on Tash Kalar? Think it is pretty good as an abstract strategy game!
These all look great, however I would have included Khet (or as Dave Gorman once called it Egyptian Lazer Chess). It's ace, and includes lazers. Win, win.
That was one I was always tempted to buy as a kid. I'm just worried it's more gimmicky than good - can you elaborate on why you like it? I'd love to hear a fan's opinion!
@@indigosunszenith7485 it is slightly gimmicky but there is a solid game underneath. It has hints of chess about it. Very easy to learn (I play with my 11 year old), but tough to master. Lots of thinking a couple of moves ahead. I love it.
@@simonmogg2851 Thanks! I'll definitely push it up my wishlist on BGG a bit. Hopefully I can find a reasonably priced copy :)
In no way does Tiny Towns qualify as abstract - too heavily themed & uses illustrated cards FFS. Looks like you will need to remove that bit & replace it with ONITAMA!
Much enjoying the videos, esp.the jokes.
Portugal you say? And a joke about a Spanish word? Adam, I can see a pattern to your humor and strangely it always comes back to south-west Europe. Anyways, let‘s have a Brandy Margaret!
0:31 -- LOL😂
It was all going so well until Tiny Towns! Ahh well, it’d be boring if we all agreed and I love Azul, YINSH and Sagrada. Now going to have to seriously consider Nmbr9 and Blokus
the only problem with these lists every week is I always want 2-4 games that look fun to me and havent had time to play the previous 2-4 games I bought and before I know it Ill have 30 games I want to play and dont have time to play! Ill just be a game collector in no time!
It's a meme in the boardgame hobby that buying games and playing them are two separate activities. Welcome to the fold!
As a chess player and pro wrestling fan. I need to play duke.
The actual greatest abstract strategy board game ... Six Making. It's chess if chess was shorter (plays in about 20 minutes), both simpler _and_ more thinky (try it and you'll understand what I mean), and, you know, actually fun. (Pro tip... use actual chess pieces to mark what each stack is during play... makes the game play much quicker and easier)
5:29 I'm pretty sure those are illegal moves. You can only place a piece on an empty space and only stack with an active piece.
Ctrl is on sale for $12 on Amazon rn👀
Why do I never see Quarto on these lists? It's quality.
For me personally war chest should be on this list. But I know that there are a lot of games...
"Azul" in Portuguese means Blue!! But you know that ;)
Can we get a top 10 movie tie in games? I'm new and a lot of IPs interest me, but hard to tell which ones are ACTUALLY GOOD
Just in case that list isn't made for a while, I'll just wholeheartedly recommended any tie-in game designed by Prospero Hall. Horrified, Jaws, Godzilla: Tokyo Clash are all crazy good, and have great entry level elements for core gaming mechanics like hidden movement, co-op play, and hand management fighting
you made several illegal moves in that Tak demo. You can't place a new piece on top of an existing one, you can only move one already on the board onto it
thowing my hat in: elements
I want to eat the pieces in AZUL.
They look like designer chocolates
Will the boys ever play azul in a board game club video?
The only thing I don’t like about this channel is it’s so new I don’t have anything to binge! I shouldn’t have watched all of the videos already..
If you love myths and legends, this game is for you! Lagim is a one-of-a-kind card game of strategy and chance. Check "LAGIM" Facebook page and website for more info.
Shoutout to Qwirkle
I miss Santorini
Hay que aprender a catalogar los juegos de mesa correctamente, varios juegos expuestos aquí no lo son
RELEVANT: Board Game Club Codenames episode 48:05
I don't know words strong enough to characterize Patric Rothfuss.
But the thing is, I don't wait for the third book anymore.
I'm done
Portuguese for Sagrada broke me
Damn, now I want them all
But I'm broke 😭
You forget completely the game Hive.
You didn't set the piece you drew orthogonally next to your Duke and that bothers me...
You sure you're not just attracted to colorful squares?
I wish CTRL was good but it comes apart at every opportunity and just does not work at all. Nice concept but not well thought out or at least well built and your praise of it kind of sullied by opinion on your opinions.
Sagrada also is portuguese for sacred. Notice us senpai
Edit: 9:41 Hey! He did!!
notice us more, senpai
Where's Qwirkle?
No quoridor?!
Funniest reviewer ever.
The Duke: appalling ageist design with tiny text in the rule book and tiny icons on the tiles.
And many of those games in your list aren't abstract.
you need God repent of your sins
