  • @eltorro84
    @eltorro84 3 роки тому

    I totally love this plugin. Has become my go to channel strip. To be honest, i haven't tried UAD stuff yet, but Waves Scheps/VEQ, Noiseash Need, and even other brainworx N type did not work for me as well as the lindell 80 series. In 90% of the cases i am using the 84 mode, which gives me a bit more flexibiliy and seems to be a little punchier and more present in the midrange and topend. But the lowend on 73 is great.
    Also the (parallel)-compressor is very useful and can bring things to life (but also destroy, so be careful with higher ratios).
    Just make sure to treat the preamp with care and dial-in before you set up the compressor, because the preamp tends to compress a lot in higher settings.
    I am a big fan but will not leave it unmentioned, that there are some features lacking (pleeeease PA, consider it for the nex tupdate):
    1. Add a second midband, even if its not true to hardware. Or make the EQ a stand-alone pluign, so you can throw in a second instance without the preamp, comp and gate overhead
    2. Add M/S mode at least for EQ and Comp

    I bought the original... BX_N when it came out but never liked the GUI and backward controls. This console is intuitive, has great features and gives an even better Neve color IMHO. It's only downside is the crappy meters.

    • @mixingwithmike
      @mixingwithmike  4 роки тому

      The 'backward ' controls were representing the exact design of the original. It actual makes more sense if you are seated at the actual console looking at an angle instead of of straight down on it. The 80 Series desks definitely had more color than the later V-Series Neves

    Thanks Michael for great review.
    I would however disagree a little about some statements of yours ;)
    While for all people who raised on analog gear learning curve, easy usage and possibility could seem great I believe overall it is not good direction just to emulate gear with just a little extension. It is still moving limitations of that gear to digital world where in fact true limitation is only imagination of creators.
    Any consoles wasn't built like it was just because it was best possible thing... They had limitation in construction because of size, price, electrical circuits limitations. When they were built it was not possible physically to grant quality and match size of console (keeping cost affordable at least for some to get them sold).
    So I believe it would be better if plugin creators left completely those limitations and gave real freedom. Virtual console build based on any elements. Switching mode making losing HPF ? It is ridiculous. Why it is like that? Just to keep exactness of emulation of real gear? Why?
    Why not build something what has no limitation at all? But still behaving like 1 console.
    Just with possibility to decide if I need 3 or 4 bands + LPF + HPF for Neve sound (why not? it was not done in real gear? So what? ;) Why not in the same console use API module (Acustica is trying to do something like this). Even better... Why not use in the same channel of virtual strip of our virtual console part of API, part of Neve, part maybe clinical EQ (not emulating any gear)... Etc... There are infinite possibilities...

    • @mixingwithmike
      @mixingwithmike  4 роки тому +4

      Hi Piotr,
      I appreciate your points, many of which are very valid. I would add that consoles of the 70's were much more focussed on sound quality than flexibility. Flexibility in design work came later in the 70's with the SSL E Series with variable frequencies and full dynamics sections in every channel. The tradeoff in quality was stark and clear then to those in the industry at the time. Most would track on a Neve and mix on an SSL as a compromise of quality versus flexibility. Most good SSL rooms were loaded with Neve, API, Pultecs and other vintage "Less Flexible" options.
      Every time an emulation is created, this debate occurs with the design team. There are 2 valid ways to conceive of a plugin's design. Slate chose to add the flexibility you are asking for as have others. UA mostly stays true to the limitations of the original design with very minor tweaks.
      Some see adaptations like full frequency sweeps, for example, as taking away what gives the vintage piece its classic sound as heard on countless great records of that era, just like SSL did back in the late 70s. I happen to be more aligned with this camp. Given the choice, I will use a UA plugin over Slate without exception and I've yet to hear an emulation with the flexibility you are asking for that sounds good enough to use in a mix.
      If I want full creative control, I will use a Pro-Q3 and throw a Neve preamp and/or tape emulation on for the harmonic distortion. Why limit myself to a 3 or 4 band EQ with a very limited ergonomic design and no RTA? So I can pretend that I'm using a Neve 8038 console?
      If I want an 8038 sound, I'll use this channel strip and throw on a dig eq to fill the limitations of this design.
      Cheers!
      Mike

      @@mixingwithmike Hi Micheal, thanks for your answer :)
      I hear you. In general sense whole DAW is giving us flexibility to mix any plugins we want on any channel... So right... But...
      The thing is about workflow and this is why channel strips are so popular not just using single plugins like pre+eq+comp+gate+etc. Or even funnier example... ;) hardware consoles vs tens of great single alone gears like pre+eq+etc .... and ... hundreds (?) cables to connect, tens of power supplies etc... Legion of standalone gear could beat quality of console but never beat workflow of using console ...
      But of course you right there are always some advantages of almost any approach. Even fixed value for EQ give instant focus on some frequencies which are not randomly picked there but after some years of experience of manufacturers ;)
      But this is the thing... we have either... or... As you pointed about manufacturers approach. My dream plugin (or framework) would be something skipping limits. With workflow of console and flexibility of use any option there. Kind of custom console freely build as needed for any channel at will.
      I am aware for many people it could sound actually as disadvantage as initial learning curve would be not so nice (but still presets could help) and also true is too many option often decreases productivity.
      But it would be something to chose. Currently if I love for instance this Lindell 80 but would like to (or be forced to) add just one or few additionally EQ point I need to add another EQ plugin and I am losing the whole beauty of workflow with channel strip and everything in just 1 place :(
