    Ahh, to be a recording/mixing engineer in 2023!
    Dang these console emulations sound GREAT!
    Many folks might not hear much of a difference between them, but the sound engineers are grinning ear to ear. 😁
    Joe is a consummate pro, and his descriptions of the differences in tonal characteristics are really spot on.

    Wow, that Helios is so “gentle” in the highs while still bringing so much clarity. Fascinating..
    As usual the API is as brilliantly metallic sounding as ever.
    The Neve is strong yet creamy. Like lows, mids, and highs all spread like icing on a cake.

      On my current African Drum ensemble piece , I am using all three of these Beauties . . . ! . . . Someone mentioned online about how good the 50 and the 80 work well together . . . So, I've been starting with the 80 and following it with the 50 on the same track, with with great results. . . & I just pulled out the 69 again today . . . Joe's video is spot on . . . I was finding myself cranking the 69 today, and feeling self conscious and confused at at how high I was boosting and how good it sounds . . . Yet it does say Passive , right on the console . . . It's good to see some reassuring perspectives on the inherent natural behaviors of these three amazing consoles !

    Just a fantastic overview of these Lindell Channel Strip plugins, Joe. Overall I liked the Lindell Audio 69. But at the same time I see the power of the others for certain types of coloring. From your Plugin Alliance video a few years back I started using the SSL channel strip plugins. Now, I'm going to dive into these Lindell Channel Strips. I did not realize how powerful they are. I so appreciate your time on this. Love your teaching style :)

    Thanks for taking the time again, Joe.
    This Helios sounds pretty good, I like the API's relatively clear UI but it shrunk the sound-stage in comparison to the other two. The Neve sounds too mid-cloudy here and it's UI is sub-optimal.
    I've got the SSL 9000, Focusrite and console_N and I would buy some more, but PA UIs are so often rushed and/or wasting much space. This Helios has fonts on top of each other (see: comp threshold) and the switches look like 1/4" jacks with a ball bearing stuck to the edge. A great big fader that rarely gets use, and the Neve's got space-wasting knobs 20x larger than the text that you actually need to be able to read.

    • @shaft9000
      @shaft9000 Рік тому +1

      Also, this is a nearly 25-minute long video but each audio example is rarely heard for even as much as 10 seconds ... at least use some text instead so we can HEAR things without constant interruptions saying the same things we've already heard 1000x in hundreds of other channel strip videos.

    Excelente, Gran review.
    Yo tengo el Lindell 80 y el Lindell 50. Efectivamente el 50 tiene mas definición pero los altos son muy ásperos.
    El Lindell 80 es increíble, yo nunca he usado una consola profesional, pero al utilizar el Lindell 80 me parece que fuera de hardware, y todo suena más grande.
    Me encantó el Lindell 69, he visto otros reviews pero no me han gustado, ahora al compararlo con estos otros plugin se pueden sacar conclusiones más útiles.
    1o. Lindell 69 por flexibilidad y sonido.
    2o. Lindell 80 por su gran sonido aún si no mueves una perilla.
    3o. Lindell 50, muy áspero en los altos.

    I know in context we have to listen and not isolation however when you engage the plugin it seems like the whole mix changes and sounds like you're engaging all of the channels. I hear the difference in the guitar example but also the other tracks change so it takes a second or two for my ears to focus in. I would love to hear the differences in isolation. Most of us I would assume have never had the opportunity to mix or even hear these great consoles in action. So I really couldn't say they sound like the original. I know they sound good but with all of the options today and the great technology they all sound really good. I have all the Lindell and Bx versions and mostly it's a trial and error on which works best for what song. That's the fun of mixing really no two people will mix the same song the same.. Nice video...

    API amazing on drums of course and great characteristic attack on the guitars, the Lindell 69 I could see it being used on something that as a raw mix needs help gluing it all together in a warm musical way, it also has a very musical eq, but for me the Lindell 80 is my winner. I’ve been mixing an album and have been using it on many tracks.. that nuke button does something so special and can be mixed dry/wet to get the perfect setting and I think it has the best top end of all 3 of these so it’s great on vocals, guitars and pretty much the whole rhythm section I mean you can put anything through a Neve 1073/1084 and it makes magic, it’s the tried and true of analog preamps. I’ve also found myself using the bx_focusrite SC channel strip a lot and love it. The Lindell SBC is a top notch compressor I use a lot as well, drums get absolutely massive using the nuke button on that! I got the all 2022 bundle rent to own a few months ago and it does not include the 69 series so I can’t justify spending $150 on it when I got hundreds of plugins for ~$5 each but still I’m so impressed with all of Plugin Alliance’s tools! I studied production at Berklee on mostly all stock plugins so this is like a whole new world to me! I did get the Neold U2A (obsessed with LA2A comps and I think this is the best PA has, great demo on that btw Joe) and the new Masterdesk pro during summer of sound with the monthly vouchers and those 2 are incredibleee! Thank You Joe!

    I adore that 80 series. Gotta REALLY stay in control of the low end with it though; it enjoys serving up lashings of beef, and the problem is that tasty beef gets irresistible! Sound is beautiful though, it's not "tubby" but it's exquisitely vintage. Certainly a "Neve guy" myself though have the BX Amek 9099 and SSL strips which are very good, but I think with the Lindell 80 and 50 series here you'd be able to make basically anything sound amazing. The bus plugins also for that saturation flavour plus the TMT are a SUPERB addition.
    In fact with those two strips, a good graphic EQ for anything needing surgery, a decent bus comp and something in a limiter you'd have a wonderful home studio!

    The 80 has been my favorite for a few years because of how silky that top end is BUT... hearing it after the API, it sounds muffled because the API has that fast high end snap. Especially on the snare.

    I love Joe Carrell and his videos. The one he did with the SSL models was brilliant. This was another great one. So nice to have those comparisons and insight. However...
    As he readily admits, he dialed this mix in on the Helios, then duplicated the settings on the 50 and 80 series. So the Helios sounds the nicest (to Joe and to me at least). As of today 7/20/23, the Helios is $180, while the 80 and 50 are $40. I own all the PA consoles (and probably half the PA products) but I waited for every one to come down to sale price before jumping in. My advice. You don't NEED anything right this minute to make great music. Wait 6-12 months and the Helios will join the 29 or 39 dollar price point.

The Neve richness is so sweet, but almost too polite in this context. I tend to use one strip across a mix to get some commonality between the tones so that it adds up to a vibe. I agree with Joe in terms of treating this parameters more agressively. Hardware units tend to impact the sound much more than software in general, and some console settings for various instruments were very drastic, but gave a lot of character. Don't be afraid to tweak those channel strips more than you'd think.

    Unlike mixing on a real console, we can of course select one console plugin per channel. So let's say, I want to feature a rhythm guitar, I might take the Lindell 50 here. But I might push back the organ with a Lindell 69. Have you guys negative had negative experience in combining different console plugins within a mix? And if so, what is negative about it?

    The 50 sounds like american rock to me. I will be using it for mixing a glam metal band soon. The gate and EQ and guitar, the preamp and comp on the bass and drums - this thing just brings the sauce of the american 80's.

    Hey Joe question, my kids went to a studio with an API and the mix they got was very punchy and the sound had depth and was big. While there was some things I did not like, I did like the quality. Is that really possible to do In the box? I am trying to figure out how to get that sound. DO I need to have a specific converter and or what can hinder that type of quality ITB?

    • @InTheMixJoeCarrell
      @InTheMixJoeCarrell Рік тому +1

      Hey Shawn thank you for watching! I do love a real analog console without a doubt. BUT I think we do now have the tools ITB to give that same vibe convincingly enough that it is more about user preference to me. There are subtle differences but both are great in their own way and the end user will never know and care what we used as long as it’s great

      Got You. One more quick question please. Do you use the Bus plugin on all your bus inputs from channels such as on on the drum bus, keys bus, vocal bus ect? Or would it just be on the stereo bus? While I know we can do it in the box and there are custom mixer builds, which would be faithful to most Neve or API configurations? Love your channel. Thanks for feeding us audio goodness.

    I love all your videos and what you do and what I'm going to say is with lots of respect and the knowledge of ergonomics.
    The monitor is too far from you for its size and too high. I can see that also on your neck in this side view video.
    Bring it to where the lexicon larc is, that would be closer and lower.
    You want your eyesight when you look straight to be horizontal with the top part of the monitor that is also a bit tilted to be vertical to your sight. Your head remains straight and only your eyes move a bit downwards. The distance depends on the size of the monitor.
    In the worst case that has to stay there, get a bigger monitor.
    I doubt it will make a difference to the Yamahas.

    69, warmth no excessive high end
    50 , most high end but too much of it for my taste for that music that you've had
    80, little muddy, too little top end
    but ...then ...all this can/will be changed by mastering....so it really depends
    all in all great job....maybe you should do more of that switching between consoles, on different styles,....and like you've said,...maybe less talking :)

    For whatever reason, the API to me sounds ''plastic'.. as in manipulated, artificial... it takes my focus away from the vibe and the parts. of your fine track. In the proper context, i guess that could work but the Helios: sonic caramel as the Nieve. Desert island strip: Helios.

    • @ChiefMiddleFinger
      @ChiefMiddleFinger Рік тому +3

      There’s no wrong answer since we all hear differently. The 50 Series on a big dense rock mix plays nicely on the 2bus and has never sounded fake or plastic, especially with API type pre circuits.
      I really want to like the Helios type ‘69 flavors but I’m just not hearing it the same way others have described it.
      I also enjoy most of the music made on real Helios Consoles. Maybe I will give it a shot when it goes on sale.
      Remixing something with demo plugins is too time consuming.
