    In this video, we went to a local supermarket in Barbados and did some shopping. We checked the prices in Popular Discounts supermarket. Barbados is very expensive even if you shop from the supermarket but it's the most cost effective way to stay in Barbados in an airbnb. We hope this is informative for you! We stayed in a Barbados vacation rental for two weeks and survived this way =)

    Hi, We are Tugce and Gokay,Turkish couple travel bloggers who travel the world and live in different destinations. We are part digital nomads, part phd students and part beach bums. We are documenting our memories along the way. Met in August 2009 in turkey, and have started traveling together in 2010. So far, we have lived in Spain, Greece, Malaysia, Thailand, Mexico and we carry our backgammon to everywhere with us. As long as there is coffee, good weather, wifi and backgammon, we are fine. Our dream is to travel, enjoy sunshine and tropic islands and learn about new cultures while we can work wherever we love together.

    I miss Barbados. Lived there for almost 4 years. Yes it is a bit expensive as compared to some of the neighbouring islands since most of the goods are imported. For tourists it's not possible to know where to buy what, but if you have been living there for a while you can always figure out where to buy cheaper stuff.
    Love this video. I used to shop at popular discounts often. Brings back memories. 😊

    If you go to Oistins avoid the Tiger gas station. There are no prices and the first time I went I paid £8 for a bag of Lays crisps. We discovered Massys the next day and it was much better.

    Barbados is actually less expensive than the other islands. The meats are actually less there than where I live in the US especially with inflation due to Covid. Black cake is usually more because it has rum. I’m not sure if you said the half cake is $75 but the price said $14.95.

      It can be true. In our experience, Barbados was way more expensive than Grenada, Curacao and Trinidad.

    its funny to be on an island and buy (FROZEN FISH) instead of fresh fish

      Depends 😊 We’re currently in Thailand (Krabi) basicaly a fishing town. Here, the supermarket does not clean little fishes (because it is cheaper) and we don’t stay in a place with a capable kitchen. So, sometimes frozen is the best choice 😄

    Buy Caribbean products, they are way cheaper than American & English imports. Get your fresh vegetables & fruits from Cheapside market & small vendors on the roadside.

      @inthatpostcard  Рік тому

      Hi Maria, whenever we asked the prices of vegetables to the roadside small vendors, they quoted higher prices than even the supermarkets. The cheapest things were Canadian products, like the tuna cans.

    • @SarahPLayne
      @SarahPLayne Рік тому

      and understand that those same road side vendors get some of the veg and fruits from the same major importers that Massy does.. and some fruits and veg aren't grown here,.. or can't grow in the quantities that are market sustainable.. there are things that farmers have cultivated that are working.. but again. not enough to support ALL of those products being local.

    We visited Massy yesterday and was shocked by the prices, especially imported goods. Gordon’s gin was on a special offer at $80 a bottle (Barbados money). Meat, fish and baby nappies seemed particularly expensive. Wine was extortionately expensive at $33 a bottle. The young women serving on the till looked thoroughly depressed 😟😰😡

    Not all locals go to Popular. as has been said. SOME items are cheaper, but not all. and their items aren't always brands that some people want to purchase. also.. probably 90pct of all goods in Barbados are imported.. this is also very much the reason for the expense of items here. I've shopped in both stores on occasion but it's not ever my first choice..

    • @inthatpostcard
      @inthatpostcard  Рік тому

      You are right, most things are imported. Still, I can't believe there are no local mangos in the supermarket.

    • @SarahPLayne
      @SarahPLayne Рік тому +1

      @@inthatpostcard like most things the world over, there is a season.. Local Barbadian mangos.. mostly "Julie" and "Pawi" grow in the summer months.. usually May through September.. and trust me. they are plentiful.. some may grow later in the year, but. .not always. so if "local" mangos aren't on supermarket shelves or at the fruit stand around the corner. that's why. Bajan Cherries are fabulous.. great for you.. but rare.. as the birds get them before people can harvest them. .We have a big tree in our back yard.. again. a summertime fruit.. small.. and the birds get more than we do..
      seasonal is the same with some Fish that are caught by Barbadian Fishing boats.. Dolphin, Flying Fish, YellowFin & Bigeye Tuna (which is mostly exported to Miami with some left here), Amberjack etc.. As your local fruit and veg vendor about locally grown products and see what they say.

Government has made great headway in that respect and the importers of complied. to say that it's policed is a different matter. you can't buy a plastic straw anymore.. or a regular plastic cup.. clingfilm/plastic wrap is still used. but much depends on what for. would like to know what you find that is So Much Plastic?? again.. @@inthatpostcard What I like about Barbados, in the larger supermarkets you can pull out US Dollars, UK Pounds or Euro's and they will take it. Can't do that at Tescos, always carry a handfull of £20 notes or if the £-$ exchange is good take some US dollars. You dont get a great rate but if you want something from the shop and have no BDS Dollars dont worry.
