One thing I find interesting is the assumptions made about women over 60 being less inclined to change. My observation as someone hurtling through my 60s at breakneck speed is that people remain largely as they were when younger, despite the body aging. I’ve just sold one home, moved into my former rental, and am traveling multi-state looking or my next home. I don’t have time to get “old.” It’s stasis that ages people.

    • @susieinthecountry4434
      @susieinthecountry4434 4 роки тому +10

very glad that you are breaking the rules and changing the meaning of "old". Those old models for age need to be shattered and show younger people a new model of how to look and feel in the future (even if they are not interested in it).

I will be 62 in August. I have been practicing IF since 2017. I started with a 16/8 window and now I do 20/4 with a 24 hour fast once a week. Occasionally, I will do a 32 or 36 hour fast. Besides Keto, this is one of the best things I've ever done for myself. I love it, it's easy, and I just can't imagine going back to eating 3 times a day. A few years ago when they said we should be eating 3 meals and 3 snacks, I tried it a few days and it was torture. I was constantly having to think about food and what I was going to eat and when. IF is so much easier. And, it's flexible. If something comes up and I'm invited to dinner (I generally do breakfast/lunch) I go and eat and just make adjustments the next day. You create your own timing for what works best for you. I highly recommend.

yes to all your thoughts. My sister freaks out when I say I fast on Monday. I'm a slow weight loser. Now that you mention it when eating the SAD diet that's all one is thinking about is is food. Now I have to ask myself if I'm hungry or not. She will be surprised at how I look when I see her again (who knows when that will be with this virus). Many in my family don't like the idea of the food police which apparently they think I am. So I have found what works for me♥

I'm 70 and have been IF for a couple of years. I started out eating my regular diet (standard American) but transitioned to keto and now keto-vore. I find IF very easy. My usual is 17 hours fasting but I do an occasional longer fast and find it very doable. I wasn't terribly obese but my weight is down probably 50 pounds from my heaviest several years ago. I work out at least 5 days a week and feel great.

Why would people even question if intermittent fasting is good for women over 60? We are not a subspecies that is not human! Fasting is good for most everyone so long as you do not have any underlying medical conditions that would prevent it. At 67, when I listen to my "health coaches" on UA-cam, I automatically assume that they are including me in their advice.

Women are not small men. Our bodies do not react to fasting the same way as men’s bodies do, and for post menopausal women, it’s _especially_ different. Most studies have been done on men, so it’s nice to see one here done on women. I’ve been hearing controversy about fasting not being good for women 50+, so this study is nice to hear. ❤

I'll be 65 in a couple of weeks and just love IF. I started with 16:8 and moved to OMAD and now I am doing Alternate Day Fasting. This is the easiest way of eating I have ever practiced. The weight is coming off, I don't feel deprived at all, my appetite is great, I'm not hungry and cravings are practically non-existent. I sleep better, have more energy and feel stronger than I have in a very long time. I thank God that I discovered this. I won't ever go back to three squares and snacks. I don't count calories either...I don't feel a need to. It's my new lifestyle and I believe I will age better and live longer and healthier because of it.

It never occurred to me that people were not talking about intermittent fasting for my age group which is 67. The reason it didn't occur to me is that I automatically assumed that I was part of the people they were targetting with their message. I'm not part of a strange subspecies that has to be treated differently then the rest.
There might be some health issues that make it difficult but generally speaking, intermittent fasting is for everyone!

I have heard that IF can improve eyesight so that is why I am so very interested. I've been doing 14:10 IF for awhile and now just have some days when I just eat 2 meals a day. I will be 65 years old in November and did keto and intermittent fasting(IF) for three weeks 16:8 and lost 8.4#. I then increased my total carbs to 65g/ day and continued IF. I am on week #30 and lost almost 42# and only 1# within my buffer weight. I walk 3.0 mile/ day six days a week, do some arm exercises and weekly yoga. The lower carb and IF has been the only thing that worked for me.

As a woman over 60, I have say that I'm offended that the researchers felt that they had to show it was 'feasible' for women over 60 to intermittent fast for 16 hours! Obviously the researchers are at a younger age where they think that those of us with more life experience are suddenly frail little old ladies! Nevertheless, I do appreciate that the two of you are covering the science as it comes out. Thank you!

High fiber, low carb and 1200 to 1400 calories. It really is not hard to do and when fasting you know you just do not eat anything so it limits snacking.

70 yo here. I've been 16/8 IFing for several months and it's feels like a very natural way for me to eat. (have always been unable to eat much before 10am anyway.) What's started to happen is that I wake up with a upset stomach lately. I take carba-levodopa for PD three times a day. I drink 12 oz of lemon water immediately when I get out of bed, but it doesn't really help. I usually wait until 10:30 to 11:30 to break the fast each day. I'm not sure what to do. I've lost 14lbs and need to lose another 30. I really want this lifestyle to work.

I'm supposed to take c/l 5 times a day. But since I've done the line fasts I've been only needing to take 3 or sometimes 2 pills a day. I've been on a healthy keto semi Mediterranean diet which definitely helps. Cutting down on carbs is very good for my brain functionality

Last night (Buenos Aires) I started the fasting plan. I want to lose about 5 kilograms (11 pounds). What most strikes me is that they have clarified that the loss of muscle "mass" is not directly and exclusively linked to diet. A "healthy" diet will help keep the body's tissues in good condition (muscle, kidney, or whatever). Do not incorporate drugs if they are not strictly necessary and sleep well, etc. But adipose tissue is a reserve tissue in all mammals. Let's remember the bears that hibernate, many spend long periods without being able to hunt (forced fasting and at that time they use their reserve tissue = adipose tissue to survive well). - Metabolism decreases during hibernation (there is no food = to hibernate!). If that situation consumed the muscle tissue, they would not be able to get up when they woke up. But of course, a total fast for a long time will end up collapsing the muscle cells as well. It's all a matter of measurement and species-specific metabolism (and individual differences between different people).

I was a sugar addict. For almost 2 weeks I’ve been eating a low carb, healthy fat diet with about a 15-9 IF. My issue is I’m not overweight. Although I do have more body fat than I would like. I’m 60 , I weigh 111lbs. and I’m 5’3”. I started this lifestyle because I was tired of being a slave to sugar and I want to be healthier with less inflammation. I also have Parkinson’s. I imagine my body will get rid of my excess fat, while keeping the muscle, and will go into “maintenance mode”so I don’t lose too much weight. Dr. Becky, you said in previous videos that you were overweight. Now that you’ve lost body fat you still continue eating and fasting this way. You don’t stop this lifestyle when you reach your goal, right? I know I’m in the minority not needing to loose weight necessarily, but thin doesn’t mean healthy .

It would be interesting to know if the 25 women fasting were working or not working outside the home or if they got to choose the 8 hour window to work around their jobs. I wonder if they stuck to 3 meals or if they skipped breakfast which would reduce their calories in a day and help them stay in the 8 hour eating window.

What finally did the trick was making Monday a liquid day (protein smoothie in the morning, 'gloopy' soup at lunchtime, berry juice in the afternoon and soup again in the evening). Tues and Wed then became my IF days off the back of that - 16/8. The rest of the week I ate normally but watched portion size - but gradually gave up wheat and sugar including alcohol and, sadly, coffee
