This is important, because you don't want to associate social media with guilt. There are times when we are too tired to engage ourselves in music, a film, a book, much less an activity. So, social media is a good way to give our brains a rest. After all, social media is not the problem, the problem is how addictive they are. So, focus on setting a time limit or a content limit, e.g. watch one youtuber per day or associate each platform with a particular type of content and only check each platform once a day during transition periods. But do not feel guilty for going on social media.

The biggest time-suck and distraction for me is tiktok. You can spend hours scrolling through 30-second long videos and while some of those videos can be informative most of them are just toxic. I've tried to start a new morning routine where I wake up really early to be more productive but the first thing I do when I wake up is go on my phone and then all of a sudden it's 9am and all that time was wasted. I'm really going to take this video and try to create some goals and actions for myself. 💕

I have started a habit where i just leave my phone in the living room so i wont use it in my room and get distracted cuz it really affects my sleep in a toxic way and i wake up to it and get tempted to pick it up right upon awaking and it feels so toxic and unhealthy cuz u start u day unintentionally and not mindful which leads to anxiety during the day and sets u up for failure. It also makes u feel sluggish if u start ur day with ur phone. Its just needs getting used to and discipline to quit the habit of grabbing ur phone first thing. I have been able to manage it the last week so its def possible being an social media especially youtube addict myself hahaha. Its just takes some willpower and self discipline and u will succeed! Her daily average at the beginning on her phone was almost 7 hours which is about the same as mine and guys IT'S NOT HEALTHY. same here! My instagram time is 3.5h daily and it terrifies me. I go there when I'm sad or scared of the real world, then an hour just disappears into nothingness, I feel more tired, more sad and more chaotic than before. I also found her methods very interesting, especially the dreaded "youtube" list - I know I won't watch as ridiculously many videos if I'd have to write it all down. I don't think she intends to track it for long, at least I won't, but even a week will be enough to break the vicious cycle.

Exactly! Just because it's become normal to spend 5+ hours daily online DOESN'T make it any healthier. I'm guilty of this too and it's a pastime I'm eager to leave behind. I've taken up daily walking which means I'm spending at least 40-60mins less on my phone each day. I also want to start reading and painting more often, as these are hobbies I'd forgotten since childhood. I've been spending 3.5h on instagram daily, mostly scrolling stories and reels. I can't stop when I start, I have the urge to pick up my phone every 15 min, and watching stuff is emotionally draining. It's an textbook's definition of addiction and as you can guess I am literally wasting my time daily. ruby, i love your content, but i think we need to stop pushing this extreme productivity life and making out that you need to gain something out of every little thing you do, and that everything you ever do has to be something you check off a to do list. i think spending less time on social media is a great idea, but it’s about having a different relationship with your phone, not by not letting yourself on it. this is gonna make a fair few people feel guilty for simply watching youtube when they have free time, or for scrolling instagram when they’re bored. not everything in life has to be productive and meaningful, it’s important to remember that, otherwise people can become obsessive with productivity and feel guilty. you are allowed to be bored.

This does make an important point and yes, not all of our social media usage has to be entirely productive or meaningful and developing a healthier relationship with our devices is so important. However, as someone with lots of hobbies and school work etc, being more mindful about what I'm doing online is important to ensure I spend time doing the things I really love and I think that's the message that Ruby is trying to get across. I like to scroll just for fun, especially when I don't have the energy for other activities, but for me (and probably many others), that time can stretch out for way too long and a lot of time can suddenly pass by where you were passive to what you're consuming and hardly even enjoying it. For example, the UA-cam video tracking notion page definitely wouldn't work for everyone, but an alternative could be making a mindset shift towards thinking about why you want to watch a video beforehand. Basically, everyone should take these tips with a pinch of salt - they may work for Ruby, but not for you and that's okay! Please look after yourselves :)

I actually don't agree with you of course every body can get bored and want to check social media once in a while but that leads to it being your default action when ever you have a spare second which is very harmful 'cause social media IS ADDICTING . And honestly there better things to do rather than being on your phone 24/7 I am not talking about being productive but about being in touch with yourself and your loved ones which should be the priority.

    • @roisinnigcrainn7722
      @roisinnigcrainn7722 3 роки тому +30

Yes, for a couple of minutes or maybe an hour each day. But when you're spending 6 or 7 or maybe MORE hours each day just mindlessly scrolling, that's unhealthy behaviour. I believe in spending 1-2 hours daily on "productive" UA-cam, and maybe 30 minutes daily on "fun" UA-cam. That's healthy.
I don't think Ruby intends on tracking her watched videos forever, moreso to get out of the nasty habit of numbing one's mind with sneakily algorithm-chosen nonsense. What I've taken from this video is that Ruby wants to watch videos on more valuable and educational topics, and use her extra time to put the lessons she learns into practice. There's always time for entertainment afterwards.

@@raquelcampos9230 Because it messes up your brain's reward system. It becomes an addiction. Social media is an easy way to get dopamine, but ironically it doesn't make you feel fulfilled or happy if you spend hours on nothing. You might feel lazy, irritated or tired after and your motivation towards anything that requires a little more effort (like drawing) drops. Apps are designed to be addictive, endless scrolling being one of the features, and we get random rewards (content that interests us somewhere between all the junk) and our brains love that unpredictability. It's basically psychological conditioning.

I used to beat myself up so much whenever I used UA-cam - I would feel so guilty for being on a screen. I never even had Instagram until recently because I had built such an "I don't want to be like other teenagers" mindset (which I have definitely got over). Now I don't have those guilty feelings, and it seems like I automatically do things intentionally... most of the time. I don't follow a heap of people and all of the content I see actually makes me feel so good. I also seem to have a time for checking social media, and it seems kind of like a task, and it is actually really nice commenting on things and getting endearing responses from creators! So, for me it works to be minimalistic and intentional, but also don't feel guilty for doing so to the point that it's unhealthy.

I think the "intentional" is the important thing here: Assign yourself time slots, e.g. after work, where you catch up on Instagram stories or you watch youtube. I personally find vlogs really calming so I like to make these a part of my evening routine. I only check Instagram once a day, after studying/working, and it really helps to cut down on social media while still allowing yourself to enjoy that medium. Same with text messages. I check them after having my meals. Boundaries, but in a way that feels intentional without depriving yourself of something you enjoy.

There is a way to reduce unwanted behavior. Mere restriction does not work, must be replaced by some other act. When you genuinely do things where you want to accomplish something, then naturally use your time meaningfully. That's enough.

I see all these comments saying that we basically shouldn't overdo it with productivity, or it's okay for her to spend some time on social media that is essentially useless. And it's become kind of a trend lately to talk about "toxic productivity" and channels that promote that. In my opinion, this kind of critique is coming from the fear that those "overly productive" people will become sooo much better than us, that we can't even reach their success/abilities/habits. Instead of saying "I have a short attention span but I actually don't mind it cause it doesn't affect my life and I still do all the things I need and want to do, even though this person on youtube is doing so much more", we say "She is working so much, seeing this is very toxic for me because it makes me feel bad for myself". We don't realize youtubers have their own life which they choose to live as they please and still share it and lay it all out for us to judge. Sure, you can choose to spend time scrolling on Insta because it gives your brain a break, but imagine reaching a level where that break for you is reading a classic work of fiction or going running etc etc. I don't see what's bad with young people trying to reach above and beyond and constantly bettering themselves. It's not like you can ever become "too good", since you can always pick up new hobbies and do more things. And don't forget, we don't need to have the same goals with all these youtubers. If you want to live in a small house with your future family working a normal 9-5, or be a housewife, or be a single millionare constantly travelling for business - IT'S ALL UP TO YOU AND WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY.

I loved this style of video so much! It's given me so much to think about and I've already set a time limit for Instagram, as that's the app I tend to mindlessly scroll on the most. I'll add one thing to add with the compulsion to take a photo of a beautiful moment instead of just enjoying it. I think it's so important to be aware of doing this too much, but I know that those are some of my favourite posts to see on Instagram. There's got to be a balance of the two though. Don't feel pressure to post it simply because you know people will enjoy it if it's going to pull you out of being present in the moment. However, know that when you do post those lovely moments, they are much appreciated 💖

This has been important for me as someone who was a student and worked a part time job at the same time. You end having such a limited amount of free time to do the things you enjoy and if you are like and me sometimes spent the occasional half an hour on TikTok and Instagram in the morning before work or school, it feels like a waste. Not saying being on these platforms for personal enjoyment is bad when you are conscious about it, but sometimes the time passes by when you were not intending to :/ (Right now, it is Sunday for me. I am not working or have any responsibilities to take care of and can therefore watch this video in peace!)

Idk, I always find it quite hypocritical when people who make a lot of money through social media give advice on how important it is to spend less time on it. Also, I think we need to be careful about pushing the idea that everything needs to be “productive”, “educational”, or rigidly tracked. Surely that in itself goes against the very idea of living in the present that social media can prevent us from doing? At the end of the day, watching a “mindless” UA-cam video to relax is not something anyone should be beating themselves up for. It’s not the end of the world to “waste time” now and then!

    • @MildExplosion

I agree not every minute needs to be productive, I've done a month off social media for a few years now and my first attempt felt a lot like this video - trying to replace downtime with productive time is a common mistake when trying to break any habit. It's really good she's tracking so much because it soon becomes clear what works and what doesn't.
Also I'm not sure how it's hypocritical to make this video - if a restaurant owner said people eat too much sugar it's not hypocritical of them to serve desserts. It's a question of volume and awareness.

Also will mean I don't check emails and SM first thing in the morning. Although I like this, and it wakes my brain up, it takes some time to then get out of bed. The restrictions you can set on apps - I had no idea so will try this. I do think that if you enjoy mindless scrolling through SM and it's function is as a brain break, then it is not time wasted. But if you know it is having detrimental affects on other aspects of your day, life, mindset, then these steps from the video are proactive for sure!

Sometimes I watch Ruby's videos for comfort and I end up feeling guilty by the end of it... I hope Ruby doesn't take this the wrong way, but sometimes the way she talks is quite preachy and unrealistic (for me anyway). This is a great video, Ruby! I have definitely fallen into a slump of spending a very long time on social media every day and I can see it affecting my mental health. It just feels awful scrolling through something like instagram, mindlessly (and despite knowing that I don't get anything from it, I keep doing it excessively? It's a bit ridiculous hahaha). I'd love to get into a routine where I don't mindlessly scroll through something like instagram because it's taking me away from things I love doing like reading books. I really liked that you showed us how you developed really actionable and trackable goals. It's definitely motivated me to do the same! This is definitely something I’m currently trying to do. I was spending over 9 hours a day just on my phone and about 7 on days that I had work, and that was just insane to me. I decided to do screen time limits but I would ignore it and still spend the same amount of time. I finally decided to have my mother make up a screen time passcode ( but I set the time limits and stuff) that I did not know and I finally was able to get it down. Now everything I watch I think about how is this going to help me. I have a show that I watch for stress relief and allowing those 1-2 episodes a day I find is so much more efficient then the 8+ I use to spend watching. For UA-cam I find that I’m actually watching the video and appreciating all the effort that it takes to produce just one video. I get what everybody is saying about how this might be so much control for screen time and social media but I like many others was spending 9+ hours on my phone and for nothing.

At the start of this year, it was one of my goals to become more mindful with how I consumed content and how much time I was spending on social media etc. Since then, I have managed to cut down some usage (although I do slip up occasionally) - I barely use facebook anymore and haven't really posted on any of my 'personal' accounts. I have posted on my 'bookstagram' but other than that, I don't think I've posted all that much on any of my social medias.
I have noticed I do occasionally go into an accidental abyss of 'reels' on instagram and spend entirely too long there and often find myself dismissing my time limits for the day on there however I am trying to become even more mindful of how I am spending my time there and trying to limit the amount of time I spend scrolling mindlessly.
One thing I have found that helps me is making it so I have to search for the app on my phone instead of just having it on the home screen, I have to actually look for it in the app library. Sometimes, that means I forget that the app exists on my phone at all and means I don't spend that much time looking at it. Another thing that has helped with certain apps is to turn off notifications. My notifications on facebook don't come through, I have to actually click the app to see them which means I don't worry that I'm missing something on there because I'm not seeing something calling me towards that app.
I feel like, especially these days, we have a lot of fear of missing out and too much concern about how other people see us which leads to over consumption of social media but I always find that the less time I spend on social media, the happier and more content I am with my life and where I'm going.
I used to get so disheartened if one of my posts 'didn't do well' and I realised how negative that view is because it's only likes on a photo. If I enjoyed taking it, editing it, and then posting it, what does it matter if it 'does well' as long as I enjoyed the process.
For the next half of the year, I really want to focus further on consuming content more mindfully and being more present!
(sorry for the essay there haha!)

I think your intention is right but please be kind to yourself. not everything has to have a productive drive and your productivity does not define your worth. living our lives to achieve and work can easily fall into capitalist work structures of lives only being valuable if we are constantly busy. this can create shame towards people who don't have the privilege to work, study or even walk and have independence.
