I own this fine record. I was fortunate to hear Geri Allen in a small Oakland club, Koncepts Cultural Gallery, some 30 years ago. It was a solo concert, and she was amazing. One memorable piece she played was Mary Lou Williams’s Roll ‘Em. I was so sad when she died of cancer in 2017. I heard Charlie Haden in a small club in Arcata, California even further back, in a trio with Lew Tabackin and Billy Higgins. Never had the chance to hear Motian in person, but love his playing.

Nicely done. Charlie struggled at points in his life and wasn’t always the happiest soul. But he made such gentle music.

Always enlightening us, Alan... thank you. I picked this album up as a young enthusiast knowing Haden and Motian somewhat, but also paying attention to the growing reputation of Allen. She was really special and this is a fine feature for her.
I was very fond of the roster of artists on Soul Note and Black Saint in those days and was able to acquire many modern classics. Muhal Richard Abrams and David Murray are barely mentioned anymore but they have some legendary releases on these labels due for reconsideration.

Cheers Jeff. For the most part, Black Saint/Soul Note are still unexplored territory for me. Looking forward to digging in.

Just recently discovered your channel and have only watched two of your 10 minute features but I have to say I really appreciate your concise, non-intrusive but thoughtful presentation style. I'll definitely be tuning in for more in the future when I feel like exploring some new records.

A great artist. One of my favorite's is The Nurturer, a brilliant record (with Marcus Belgrave - I seem to remember).

Interesting review of a newer album and artist (than the classic ones). Totally new to me - thanks.
And congratulations with new head quarters 😆
It has more reverberation than the old place, which sounded so wonderfully "dry".
And allow me to say (with the best intentions): The sound is more muffled (darker/"wolly") - maybe try turning the mike upside up.
    But thanks anyway!

Thanks. And yes, I'm struggling with mike placement issues. Turning it upside down has addressed sibilance but the sound level is too low in general, and I can't boost it too much in iMovie without getting distortion. The issue is also related to the low input levels I seem to be able to achieve with my iPhone 13. So an upgrade in mic and camera beckon.
And indeed, the new room (repurposed family room) is too echoey right now. The Fair Lady Reviews has vetoed sound baffles on the ceiling, but window treatments, a couple more fabric chairs, a bigger carpet and more art on the walls will help.

Love this record. Picked it up earlier this year, not cheap. Thanks and is that a Laphroaig behind you? One of my favorites - Mike

Yes! For me, it's a 5-star record, and a 5-star review ... and the featurette on the Soul Note/Black Saint labels is a nice bonus.

Thanks. Featurette is maybe an overly grand description of what I delivered. Though I have to say my appetite was whetted to learn more. Bethlehem next in my sights however.

It’s a great album. The price jumped after Joe Harley mentioned it as one of his favourites and it is now quite expensive. At least I managed to get hold of a CD. 😊

@@andysmusicden I noticed that the other day, and glad I picked up my copy when I did some time back, on a Charlie Haden kick. Speaking of him, I assume you've heard his mid-70s duets records? Magic.
