As a theologian, I often contemplate the vast difference between the living circumstances of animals and humans. In short, I envy animals, the simplicity of their lives. They are totally unaware of all the troublesome news permeating the minds of humans. Yes, they face death, but: a) so do we; and b) they, unlike us, are utterly unaware that death exists! They don't worry about funeral expenses, never give a thought to getting dumped in a nursing home, never heard of fentanyl, never a thought about nuclear holocaust, they have no student loans to pay off, have no career to pursue, aren't big on marriage, have no confusion about their pronouns ... and on and on. So, remind me once again, how is it that we are the lucky ones, the cream of the crop, from up on top? Does a flock of geese have any idea how we are in awe of them as they stream silently through a sunset horizon? ... how we hold our breath when we hear a loon calling to his mate in the darkness hovering over a Canadian lake, the haunting sound echoing down the still water? No, sometimes I think we got the short end of the stick. Back to reality: Oh, I hate Biden; We must stop Trump; Putin's gonna get us ... the Russians are coming, the Russians are coming; 35 trillion national debt ... it's gonna collapse ... better buy gold; another pandeminc is gonna get you; What have we created? God, help us ... save us from ourselves.
