  • It's been a while and I just wanted to get my thoughts out on gaming. Rougelikes hold no value to me right now and I need a break from it. It's something I thought I would never say but here we are
In my next video or couple of videos I'm gonna be exploring games I've been playing and games I've been enjoying. Gaming is becoming fun again and not something I just do to pass the time. Not mindless gaming anymore
Even if you watched the video no matter how short thank you it means a lot. I'll see you guys in the next one

Let me know what games or genres you have been taking long breaks from. Have you ever not been back to that game or do you greet it like an old friend. Happy late 4th of July!

Online FPS. I haven't played COD since Black Ops 1, and I randomly had the urge and bout MWIII. I actually really have been having a lot of fun with it.
Also strategy games. I haven't played any since I went way too deep into CiV back in the day.

Roguelikes are great in the discovery phase where everything is new, new items, new characters, new concepts, and new mechanics, once the discovery phases is over the game is over, I suggest checking out The Big Catch: tackle box, it is a good demo to a good game (3D platformer, not a roguelike)

Personally, I feel like the Discovery Phase is the one thing that drives me to immerse myself in a game. Getting thrust into the unknown and trying to make best of what you're given, or trying to make head or tails of what lies before you.
Unfortunately, I tend to rush through this discovery very quickly. Trying to optimize the fun out of the game.
But there are some great games out there that base themselves on this discovery, such as Outer Wilds, Fez, or perhaps Tunic. I'm looking forward to Animal Well and Leap Year as well, I hear they do this too, but I'm yet to try them.
One key feature that a lot of games miss when fueling Discovery, is hiding the true depth of the game until the player reaches the end of it.
So many games will show the full tech tree, or the number of items/regions/creatures to catalogue, all at the start of the game. From this, you know how much game there is ahead of you.
But there are a good few games that don't do this. Games that hide something special that you'll encounter by playing the game that will completely shatter what you were expecting from the game. For example:
      - Nier Automata, where you reach the end of the story, and the end credits only to start the game again with a different character and see the same story from a new perspective. (And that's not all it does!)
      - 4D Golf, where each 18-hole course is themed around a certain mechanic. But then you hit the final region, and it just turns the game upside-down in your face, with an existing mechanic being reinvented into something that doesn't seem possible.
      - Rain World, which simply doesn't tell you how big the world is, or what great things still exist in this deteriorating world. A lot of players don't get to enjoy this because they are rushing to discover, whereas pacing yourself in this game and learning to survive actually offers a much better experience. More than once I've seen a player pace themselves in the first region, getting to grips with the movement, enemies and rain. But when they hit the second region, they'll start rushing, getting frustrated, and failing to learn about the new challenges in their new region.
      - Baba is You, where after beating the normal puzzle levels you start discovering meta levels that affect things outside those original puzzles. Before long, the game becomes entirely about those meta puzzles.
      - Dark Souls, where an entire region is hidden behind an illusory wall, behind an illusory wall. This one is special, because is shows that the Devs were not afraid to hide things that some players (who finish the game) will never see.

The feeling of meaninglessness is something that can be found in every genre. It is inevitable in gaming. The thing you have to focus on is not the search for meaning in a particular game, but just find something you enjoy and it brings you a good time.
Ofc the same can be said about life but that's part of the fun in games. Most of them can give you a new perspective on life and it can make things fun.

I definitely fell out of attraction with the genre. I'm feeling more like I want something more structured, intentional and less of a loop; a more definitive end.

Never understood the appeal of this genre. I also put the soulslikes in the same pot: boring repetitive loops, where everithyng reset with no permanence.

Rogue-Likes use to be my bread and butter but for a couple years now I haven't played them, I would buy and test a dozen or so but always end up refunding them.
I don't know what it is about them. Like you said i think it's partly due to once i have reached the end goal there is nothing for me anymore, no reason to continue playing. I completed Endless Dungeon within my 10th run or something and just never went back, there is no reason for me to continue. The builds don't vary enough, there are breaks of doing "chores" (running room to room collecting all the upgrades in proper order) just so you are being optimal instead of just running forward doing the fun thing unprepared for the future rooms.
I use to love Risk of Rain 2 but at one point it just kind of snapped of how I wasn't having fun, and for that game it's mostly to do with the amount of running around i have to do at the start of an open map, I'm slow and underpowered and the early game being the most replayed part was just so boring and I just couldn't be bothered anymore going through the starting grind just to get to the part i have fun at, and then once I get to the late game, if you have done well with RNG and building you are just unstoppable and it's not fun then either.
The only Rogue-Like I really enjoy now is Gunfire Reborn, I think it's due to the maps just being linear with very little back-tracking. You are always pushing forward and advancing your build while doing so, the build variety is decent and multiple characters with their own builds. It's a fantastic game, especially with a friend.
Playing single player games really is a huge refresher, especially fun when having people watch you play it, games like Dead Space, Metro, Alien Isolation, Ghost of Tsushima. I highly, highly suggest it. some of those games are decently old now and can be bought for cheap.

Single player games have been my go to in recent times and I actually am playing Dead Space although that's on my ps3. Been recently on my consoles more and more. I do have metro somewhere in my epic games library I think but yes single player games have a great progression and story characters. Nier automata is my go to game for this type of stuff. Also the price yes single player games (and rougelikes) go for cheap on sale so it pays to wait a bit

So in short, you got tired of your favourite genre cause you played too much. Happens to everyone, hope you find something new to enjoy soon!
