- A 1920's song based on a poem written by Li Shutong with melody borrowed from an old American song "Dreaming of Home and Mother". Though the American version of the song has long been forgotten even in the land where it was created, the Chinese adaption, however, with its touching lyrics, has enjoyed an everlasting popularity. This rendition was performed by the Qingyanzi Group.

It is originally an American song : dreaming of home and mother.
The lyrics were written by an extraordinary character over a hundred years ago. Child prodigy, savant, dynastic scion, Chinese Imperial scholar, literary poet, pioneering musician, philandering dilettante, capitalist, revolutionist, political refugee, Japanese playwright, devoted husband and Buddhist monk.

Plus accompany with stunning video
Outside the long pavilion, along the ancient route, fragrant green grass joins the sky,
The evening wind caressing willow trees, the sound of the flute piercing the heart, sunset over mountains beyond mountains.
At the brink of the sky, at the corners of the earth, my familiar friends wander in loneliness and far from home,
One more ladle of wine to conclude the little happiness that remains; don't have any sad dreams tonight.
Outside the long pavilion, along the ancient route, fragrant green grass joins the sky,
I ask of you, as you go this time, when are you to return? When it's time to come please don't hesitate.
At the brink of the sky, at the corners of the earth, familiar friends wander in loneliness and far from home,
In life it is happy reunions that are rare; most often we bid farewell.
At the brink of the sky, at the corners of the earth, familiar friends wander in loneliness and far from home,
In life it is happy reunions that are rare; most often we bid farewell.
This is the best translation I've seen. It captures the original meaning and flows well in English too. Great job and thanks for sharing.
Thank you for the good and apt translation
@@Popular4 It is my pleasure!
My Chinese teacher give this song to me and said sing this as your midterm 🥲
This is probably the best version of the song you can find. Good luck.

Rest in peace Yixuan and Mandisa🕊️🕊️🕊️.
There is a sad background story of this song. Just before Li Shutong determined to become a monk, one of his close friends (Xu Huanyuan) turn up to his door step in a snowing winter night, and shouted out to him:"Shutong, I've lost everything, I'll vanish, farewell." Without even facing each other, this friend disappeared into the void of the night. Shutong fell deeply into sorrow for a long time and this song came out.
Thanks for adding the story, very interesting. I am sure the viewers will appreciate your contribution.
well thats sad
Yeah that's true,
His wife who went looking for him, cried her eyes out asking why he would love humanity but was so heartless to her.
I love this song ❤️❤️
And the english translation:
By the ancient road outside the long pavilion,
Green grass stretches to the sky.
The evening breeze brushes the willows, as the flute's sound fades,
The setting sun beyond the distant mountains.
At the edge of heaven and the corner of earth,
Half of my close friends are gone.
With a pot of turbid wine, we exhaust our remaining joy,
Tonight, separate dreams will be cold.
By the ancient road outside the long pavilion,
Green grass stretches to the sky.
I ask you, when will you return from this journey?
Do not hesitate when the time comes.
At the edge of heaven and the corner of earth,
Half of my close friends are gone.
In life, it's rare to have happy gatherings,
Only partings are many.
At the edge of heaven and the corner of earth,
Half of my close friends are gone.
With a pot of turbid wine, we exhaust our remaining joy,
Tonight, separate dreams will be cold.
At the edge of heaven and the corner of earth,
Half of my close friends are gone.
In life, it's rare to have happy gatherings,
Only partings are many.

The lyrics is 100% Chinese wrote by a monk a century ago . The music is American. It has nothing to do with Japanese.
