Oh my God I had a very similar experience.
I remember I had just found out about emulation (I was like 6) and I was having so much fun because my friend had a SNES and I always wanted one because we had so much fun playing and now I could play those games at my house (Although it was always more fun with a friend so I still went over there often.)! So one day I saw a complete SNES rom set download and that blew my mind as a kid and I decided to click on the first rom on the list.
BIG MISTAKE. Joel wasn't exaggerating when he was talking about the pictures being gross. My friend was actually with me when we came across that rom and we almost immediately closed it and never spoke of it ever.
I actually had a similar experience two times in my life. The first one was with a ROM that had a hack of Mario 2 where Peach was naked and even though it looked like shit and wasn't really that bad, I got super fucking scared because I thought my mom would destroy my phone for looking at titties.
The second one was with an arcade stick plug and play my dad got me for my birthday last year. Barring some issues with the controls it was a pretty cool gift, but the games that it had was literally just an FBNeo ROM dump and had a ton of really weird and fucked up games, and apparently there is a niche subgenre of games that are basically just like fucking Break Out but with porn, so I tried one of those games just for the lulz, only to find out that if you perform poorly you get pictures of like dead people or flies eating shit and it scared me so badly I had to give away the machine because I never could bring myself to even touch it ever again after that.

I remember finding these roms when I was a kid back in the 00s. I didn't really think about it that much, but it still feels nostalgic sorta. I'm a bit more nostalgic about some 1997 New Year demo though.

I know the ROM collection he's talking about, it's a fairly huge SNES ROM collection that is decently popular (as in, I didn't have to search far and wide to find it). I thought I was gonna keep those porn ROMS, but the "holy fuck this ROM is a hentai slideshow" novelty died down pretty quickly and all I was left with was really shitty pictures, so I got rid of them. :

There's tons of hentai and porn roms. I recently downloaded the complete snes rom set from emuparadise. Some are called Adult Manga 1 and Adult Manga 2 also Wesley Girl there's tons in there. lol

Could also be homebrew roms with slide shows, which are normally found on SNES rom packs, and they can have innocuous content like Toy Story screencaps to good ol' 90's porn.
